KTM 690 SMC – series against tuning

Content of

Avast – watch out, corsairs of the asphalt! The tuning company Pirate Racing has blown a lot of wind into the sails of a supermoto KTM 690 SMC and sends the strengthened pirate bride into battle against a standard machine. Sharpen the sabers, hoist the Jolly Roger, get ready to board!

accompanied by fearsome battle cries, under the deafening roar of cannons and acrid smoke, pirates once pounced on their victims. A few centuries later, two supermotos go into battle. They too are out for prey and fight their opponents. Exhaust hammers can be heard as a substitute for the cracking of the guns, tires whimpering for wild cries of battle, drifts set clever attack and defensive maneuvers, and a burnt mixture replaces the smell of black powder. In contrast to privateers, the two KTM fight 6th90 SMC not only with their adversaries, they also compete with each other: a refined sailor is better suited for battle than a serial barge?

Aye, the performance data speak for it. The pirate Michael Bongen (pirateracing.de), based in Pulheim near Cologne, tickled almost 77 hp and around 73 Nm from a 2009 SMC. That is over eleven PS and around six Nm more than the standard test machine. Extremely impressive values for a one-master. This power output can hardly be achieved without increasing the displacement. So the enlarged "Jack Sparrow of the KTM single-cylinder tuning" the bore by two to 104 millimeters, the stroke remained identical at 80 millimeters. This results in a displacement of 679 cubic centimeters, which means that the tuned KTM comes much closer to the value of 690 suggested in the model name than the standard machine with 654 cubic meters. Such oversized displacement enjoy a long tradition in Austrian single-cylinder engines. Common – arrr!

Back to the fighting. The tuned sails from around 5000 rpm "Black Pearl" to the standard version circles. The power attacks are accompanied by noticeable vibrations on deck that are appropriate for the punch. The sound of the pirate SMC is also clearly audible. It rumbles from the open accessory end pot like an angry offshore thunderstorm. In the lower speed range, the excess power is significantly lower. This is where the advantage of the revised stew lies between one and two hp and a maximum of three Nm. When accelerating out of corners under partial load, the series 690 has advantages due to its somewhat more powerful acceleration and makes two or three meters more than its big-bore sister. At full load, the fast glider restores the ranking. In terms of pulling power as well as acceleration, it is clearly ahead of the standard KTM. In these exercises, the tuning variant is also helped by its slightly shorter translation and lower weight.

Pirate Racing presses great punch out of the KTM single cylinder.

The aforementioned increase in displacement and the exhaust muffler are of course not the only tuning measures on the black pearl. Since all of their modifications relate almost exclusively to the engine, PS gives a small, interesting insight into how the tuning shipyard Pirate Racing works: The larger bore naturally requires a different piston. Here the technician relies on the American company CP-Piston, which supplies high-strength goods with milled valve pockets. The deep-hardened connecting rod bolts, whose needle bearing cage has been silver-plated for optimized friction, are also extremely resilient. Instead of cylindrical roller bearings, stable ball bearings serve as crankshaft bearings. They also generate less friction. Should such a warehouse collapse, according to Pirate Racing, this will be announced in good time with typical noises. Bongen: "When the clacking occurs on a crankshaft with standard bearings, the material has already dissolved and usually causes high consequential damage. In the worst-case scenario, our camps prevent worse."

The tuner removed four tenths of the material at the cylinder base, which increases the compression ratio to 13.25: 1. Special camshafts (rally version) rotate in the cylinder head, which KTM offers as an accessory. They explain why the Big Bore Sumo works relatively cautiously up to medium speeds: The timing helps the drive to achieve high peak performance, which costs power at low revs. Flow-optimized valve seats complete the modifications to the cylinder head. On the engine periphery there is a free-flow manifold, a racing air filter and a self-made intake pipe with a butted diameter.

The engine control is the heart of the tuning. The freely programmable CPU allows injection quantities and ignition times to be varied at any speed and under any load condition. A real treasure trove for electronics specialists. The system also controls the servomotor for the throttle valves, which allows further adjustment work such as the throttle response. The idle behavior shows that the devil is sometimes in the details: Sometimes the tuning sumo dies suddenly. In both KTMs, the limiter puts an end to drifting at 8600 rpm. The captain is so convinced of the stability of his work that he gives a six-month guarantee on the conversion even for racing. The costs? 5000 pieces of eight. If no pirate currency is available, the same amount of euros will do the same. The price also includes the only modifications that do not affect the drive: the matt black coated swing arm and the anodized footrests.

For 2010, the Austrians donated SMC tubeless rims, a new cockpit and a different decor. Very beautiful. On the other hand, the spring elements are still less convincing. Both forks require high breakout forces on the first few centimeters of their spring travel. Also in the further course they respond only moderately and rattle insensitively over bumps. And the struts work a little underdamped under combat conditions. Soul seller then? No. But with a basic price of almost 9,000 euros, privateers can expect slightly better coordinated spring elements. Savvy – all right?

Conclusion: Pirate Racing squeezes great punch out of the single cylinder. On the test site, a winding go-kart track, the Tuning-KTM only plays out this power to a limited extent due to its performance. In order to develop appropriately, it needs a more open field like the country road. But in contrast to the series, it lacks an ABE.

Performance diagram of the series and tuning KTM.

From around 5000 rpm, the Pirat Racing-KTM clearly sets itself apart from the production bike. At its peak, it surpasses this by more than eleven hp and six Nm. These are top values for a single cylinder. Below this mark, however, the power surplus of the tuned SMC is marginal. The series 690 even enjoys advantages in the partial load range at low speeds. This is particularly noticeable when accelerating gently from tight corners. Translated more briefly and slimmed down by several pounds, the strong pirate bride strikes back with the shower head open.

Sumos in price comparison

"Real", rough supermotos are no longer made these days. They are also difficult to get on the used market. Is the supermoto segment threatened with extinction? NO – They still exist: Pounding single-cylinder wheelie machines that scare heavy horsepower monsters in the narrow corner work and on the house route. Here you will find real single steam hammers, as well as their big siblings, who want to enable a wider range of applications with more power with less vibration: Supermotos in Germany
