The MotoGP 2020 season is waiting to start, like other events, the end of the virological breath. Alas, the GSX-R 1000 R heats up in its own way the spirits so that the aura of competition warms the fairings.
Here, the hypersportive has updated its dress inspired by the GSX-RR. A marriage of light gray and azure, soaked in a certain restraint to gently waver towards elegance. Not sober, but not far.
This decoration pays homage to the Suzuki RT67, a motorcycle which will have seen a certain Barry Sheene (among others) in its seat. The team entered in the world championship thus makes a big nod to Suzuki’s competitive debut. It was in 1960, at the Tourist Trophy.
The presence of Ecstar is in the spotlight. Not that of AKrapovic, neither in sticker, nor in exhaust. Moreover, the technical, engine and electronic parts are identical to the normal GSX-R 1000 R. 202 horsepower in the box, a large aluminum perimeter frame, an inverted Showa BFF cartridge fork, a post-combustion-style character and assistance on all stages (ABS cornering, traction control, launch control, shifter Up & Down, IMU, anti-stoppie, Low RPM, Easy Start, several engine maps)
This special series is also part of Suzuki’s centenary celebrations. Well almost. The Hamamatsu brand honors them this year … with a certain delay; the firm was born in 1909, as “Suzuki Loom Works”. So 111 years ago – why celebrate 100 years today then ?!?
Because it was in 1920 that the company was reorganized into “Suzuki Loom Manufacturing Co” and listed on the stock exchange following its remarkable success in weaving machines. It was also from this moment that Suz began to diversify into other sectors. The rest is a long adventure, where the motorcycle marked sacred moments of glory and performance.
But back to this GSX-R 1000 R Ecstar 100th anniversary replica. No need to think about welcoming it in the garage: Suzuki has only planned its marketing in Asia. This absence can also be a way to start saying “goodbye” to one of the most famous sports in motorcycle history. The Gex does not pass Euro 5, and Suz has not planned to adapt it accordingly.
