"Pure Sport Roadster" – whether that’s the right term for the new Suzuki naked bike?

Pure Sport Roadster?
A lot of power for the windy face: a powerful naked bike has to offer that from the first meter. Suzuki thinks too and christened the new Suzuki GSX-S 1000 the name “Pure Sport Roadster”. Does the description apply? MOTORRAD was able to test it in Spain.
B.Cloudy skies, rain-soaked streets and no sun in prospect: In weather conditions like this, the tester‘s heart didn’t exactly beat to the limit. Especially if you want to go on a long lap into the hinterland of Alicante – with guaranteed bends until you drop. The other way around: A bike that works well even in less than ideal conditions usually rides more than passably even under top conditions. So put your helmet on and go. Whereby neither the protective hat nor the rest of the equipment comes from the author himself. The suitcase, which was lost during the flight, prevented that. Fortunately, the Suzuki clothing store had all sorts of accessories, except for boots.

Pure Sport Roadster?
GSX-S 1000 on the wet road around corners, quickly builds confidence. The inclinations increase and the first dry spots can be seen. When it comes to road construction, the Spaniards showed the courage to be diverse. Surfaces with good grip mix with low-adhesive coverings based on shell limestone. Then the cable pulled too hard and …
Traction control on the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 works really well
Not at all and at the same time. Pulling is right because the Suzuki still receives commands to open and close the throttle valve in the classic way via trains. No ride by wire. However, the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 mitigates the acute potential for a fall if the mixture factory is opened too harshly by means of traction control. And it works really well. You can choose between levels from, 1, 2 and 3. Voting three is specially designed for difficult road conditions. So tried it out right away.
Before questions arise: Suzuki relies on pure traction control – without reducing the number of horsepower via driving modes at the same time. The most defensive design of the TC works safely and smoothly. If you use too much power, it gently reduces the gas. If you are not prepared for it, at some point you will just notice the wildly flashing, yellow control light in the easy-to-read cockpit of the Suzuki GSX-S 1000. Aha, so quickly step 2 in, the normal mode. After all, the sun sends a lot of warm rays towards the earth.

Pistons three percent lighter than in 2007
As the weather improves, the engine is also challenged more. And that’s what it wants. It is based on the GSX-R units from 2005 to 2008 and has adopted their long-stroke (73.3 mm bore / 59.0 mm stroke) and high-torque design. However, it didn’t just wander into the completely new aluminum frame of the Suzuki GSX-S 1000. Rather, the Suzuki technicians fine-tuned it specifically for use in the naked bike. The titanium valves, which are only required for the highest engine speeds, are no longer required, but pistons that are three percent lighter than in 2007 whiz up and down the engine. In addition, new camshaft profiles optimize the timing. An update of the fuel injection with double 44 mm throttle valves per cylinder rounds off the adaptation measures.
Anyone who thinks about strict performance castration will be disappointed. Or can look forward to a really great engine. The key data of 145 hp at 10,000 rpm and 106 Nm just below that already indicated the potency on paper. The truth is even better. Around the bottom, the four-in-line of the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 pushes forward properly. From mid-speed at a good 5000 revs, it is really good in the juice, before a noticeable performance boost follows shortly after the 7000 mark. Then there is a real fire in the hut. That feels great. That feels strong. That kind of feels like a little power plus. MOTORRAD will soon be testing on the test stand whether the one or the other horse power is still applied to the crankshaft.

"Pure Sport Roadster" – whether that’s the right term for the new Suzuki naked bike?
But let’s be honest: Complain about too much performance? Where are we It is better to continue enjoying the full boost. Slight load changes cloud the gas-to-gas-to-transition in the thicket of curves. Maybe driving modes wouldn’t have been so bad after all? But after a few kilometers you got used to it. The Suzuki GSX-S 1000 flies through the different radii with a lot of flair, reliably bends into an inclined position on the deep, only slightly offset handlebar. The view remains free for the right choice of line.
A large part of this performance in the left-right-left jungle is due to weight and chassis. Suzuki gives a credible 209 kilograms with a full tank. Compared to competitors like Honda’s CB 1000 R, Kawas Z 1000 or the Triumph Speed Triple, that’s really little. Only BMW’s S 1000 R is on a similar Weight Watchers level. Suzuki has also made no compromises when it comes to the chassis: At the front, a fully adjustable 43-inch Kayaba upside-down fork guides the bike safely over the asphalt, while at the rear a spring strut with adjustable rebound and preload ensures contact with the ground. The fork and shock absorber of the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 are sporty and tight, but without relying on unrelenting hardness. This ensures sensitive, precise contact with the road and clean steering behavior. When it came to the geometry of the chassis, Suzuki relied on conservative values. At 1460 mm, the wheelbase is 55 mm longer than the current GSX-R 1000.
Runs steadily across the track even at accelerated speeds
It looks similar with the figures for the steering head angle and the caster. If the former is 66.5 degrees steep for the athlete, it is a flatter 65 degrees for the naked bike. In addition, the caster on the GSX-S grew by two to 100 millimeters in comparison. Overall, somewhat more moderate dimensions: This concept works perfectly “on the road“. And provides the naked cannon with the urgently needed driving stability at high speeds, which is only necessary due to the upright sitting position. In any case, the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 runs steadily across the track even at increased speeds.
What else is important for smoothly waving around? The braking performance! At the front, the Brembo monoblocks known from the current GSX-R grip into floating 310 mm discs. At the rear, a single-piston caliper and a 250 millimeter disc complete the brake package. The first time the pads are put on, the speed decrease is slightly defensive. With more pull on the lever, things get much better and the deceleration performance increases significantly. Sports cracks would probably want a crisper bite, everyone else gets along well with the design. To ensure that the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 comes to a safe stop in extreme cases, Suzuki has given it an ABS unit from Bosch that weighs only 640 grams. This regulates late and stops the motorcycle safely – without the rear wheel lifting when anchored at the limit.
Is the GSX-S now the Pure Sport Roadster?
Definitely! The Suzuki GSX-S 1000 is a sporty, active naked bike, an asset to the category of potent, undisguised bikes. That already arouses curiosity about the exchange of blows with the competition.
Anyone who would like to try out the Suzuki GSX-S 1000 beforehand will have the opportunity to do so from Easter 2015. Then the first copies will go on sale. And if you fall in love right away, you should take 11,490 euros to the dealer. For this amount, the Suzuki is available as an introductory offer including a Yoshimura exhaust and colored brake calipers until April 18, 2015. After that, the price should settle at the level of the Kawasaki Z 1000. Yoshimura dampers and colored brake calipers are just a small excerpt from the range of accessories that Suzuki has launched for the GSX-S 1000. This ranges from touring accessories, such as tank bags and heated grips, to fall protectors and shows&Shine parts – for a power machine according to your own taste.
