GSR reloaded

Appeared in 2011, the GSR 750 hands over to the GSX-S 750, an heiress who wants to reshuffle the cards in a category in perpetual movement where inflation is required in terms of displacement. What are its strengths? We went to discover them in Alicante, in the south of Spain. Account of a particularly wet test which allowed the roadster to be tested in all conditions…

"Ah Spain, the alleys, the linen hanging from the windows, the sun and the militia which passes four by four armed to the teeth, ready to pounce" … Said the late Coluche. Well, fortunately, the militia has not run since the departure of General Franco, but we did not see the laundry in the windows either, and even less the sun, because of the terrible weather. Torrential rain, wind and even snow on the summits. So let’s face it, the test was disturbed, especially for the photos and videos, but don’t worry, lerepairedesmotards.com has wet his shirt (and even his underwear!) For you and we have everything also rode more than 120 km to get a good idea of the bike in these difficult conditions. We are used to saying that it is in adversity that we recognize our allies and here, the Suzuki roadster was able to give us the change..

Roadster

Discovery

At first glance the motorcycle seduces with its sharp and worked lines. Everything is plunging, tilted forward and the presence of a serial shoe largely contributes to the homogeneity of the whole. The front is stocky, the rear slender, it slams! The gold anodized fork arms enhance the front axle which now benefits from radial braking. New 10-spoke wheels, petal discs and contoured swingarm contribute to the overall feel that is more rewarding than the old GSR. In short, the first impression is very good.

In the saddle

Let’s get on board and immediately notice that the seat is at a very affordable height, even for those under 1’70 m. You can easily put your feet on the ground and the well-placed footrests do not interfere in any way when you go to look for the ground. We appreciate just as much the narrowness of the tank which does not spread the legs too far. The handlebars fall well under the hands and the controls too, although only the brake lever is adjustable in spacing. Relatively low, the new dashboard is very complete, too bad you have to let go of the handlebars to change the display. We will remain cautious about its readability given the weather conditions which caused intense fog in the helmet and also due to the presence of a GPS on our test motorcycles, which disturbed the field of vision a little..

Motor

A short push on the starter and the engine snorts without having to keep the button pressed, thanks to the "easy start" system. The sound is discreet and vibrations absent. We take off smoothly, not without making the clutch wax a little, 4 cylinders oblige, despite the idle control system supposed to facilitate "take off". On the other hand, we do appreciate its presence during evolutions at very low speed and on idle. The firmness of the clutch is in the norm, we go first and off we go.

City

Supple, docile, the four-legged has no equal when it comes to moving smoothly at low speed. With a contained, well-balanced size, the GSX-S behaves very well in an urban environment. The brakes are progressive, the weight is not felt and the shape of the saddle makes it easier to put your feet on the ground. There is just a slight feeling of hardness in the steering between 0 and 5 km / h, which disappears immediately as soon as you drive. The mirrors are efficient, the controls accessible, everything is fine in an urban environment!

Departmental

Everyone knows that Spain experienced a period of euphoric growth which led to some excesses. In this case, for the biker, this translates into a secondary network with a neat coating, a sign of a country that has the means, or believed to have them. We therefore took advantage of roads that were often in very good condition offering an excellent level of grip, even under the deluge of rain that we picked up. In these conditions we fully appreciate the precision of the chassis which allows you to concentrate on the trajectories, despite the rain. We draw beautiful curves and we take pleasure in the sequences, forgetting that we have full water in the boots, mist in the helmet and that the pace of driving is still sustained. Of course, there is no question of entering the curves standing on the brakes, putting the knee on the ground and opening like a pig when exiting a curve, if indeed we know how to do it. Impossible to assess the behavior "at the limit" because of the weather conditions, but in this context where precision is essential, the GSX S does not disappoint.

on the highway

National

At the highest speeds, the good balance between stability / handling is confirmed and the bike remains straight in its boots, as a French politician said. The riding position is still excellent, you can move around in the saddle and the relatively short footrests allow good control of the bike. The engine is showing a good length, even if we hardly had time to go tickle the switch. The increased power of 8 horses is more than sufficient on the road, on the other hand, we would have appreciated a little more breath at mid speed.

Comfort

Well installed on board we take full advantage of the "sound system". The new three-entry airbox happily distils the barking of the engine, which seems to go up in the towers with glee. In the absence of very strong braking, lack of grip, the new front fork does the job well. The rear is more difficult on small impacts such as bitumen fittings. In these conditions the rapid damping is a bit limiting, while on stronger compressions, the rocker suspension works well. Remember that apart from the preload of the springs nothing is adjustable, neither in front nor behind. However, let us temper our judgment because of the very low temperatures, a few degrees, which freeze the oil and therefore the suspensions. Add to that my reasonable weight of around 65 kg excluding equipment, the weight of the latter increasing over the miles as the diapers got wet and my boots filled up..

The seat remains easy to access, even for bikers of 1.70 m

Braking

The new equipment, petal discs and radial calipers are really effective. Thanks to the very catchy bitumen, we were able to try some hard braking in a straight line to confirm the power and the dosability of the front assembly. The rear is also quite up to the task. Both are based on the new ABS, which is as discreet as it is efficient. A real treat! When it goes off, you just feel a few light pulses in your hand or foot. Top! This same ABS is based on suspensions which allow good maintenance of wheel / ground contact. Obviously it matters! Finally, and this is one of the other very good surprises of this test, let’s not forget the original tire fitting of the Bridgestone S21 "G" specifications developed for the GSX-S, in partnership with the manufacturer. Their rounded profile very reassuring and the very strong grip in the wet have often made us forget the grayness and the ambient deluge. well done, (well done) as our English friends say.

Practical aspects

Now is the time to talk about an angry subject: money! Advertised at € 8,899 in red or blue and € 200 more in matte black, the GSX-S is around € 900 more expensive than its predecessor, in the ABS version. How to justify such a difference? Let’s see this through the menu. In addition to the reworked lines, which requires investment, you now have a serial shoe. You also have a new lighter and more complete dashboard, new wheels, a profiled swingarm, an irreproachable pneumatic mounting, a new lighter ABS, but above all very powerful and an opposing 4-piston radial braking just as convincing..

GSX-S750 inherits engine spoiler

On the engine side, you also gained 8 horsepower and the switch to the Euro IV standard. Last but not least, you also benefit from an anti-skid system that we were able to test up and down and across, so to speak, given the driving conditions. We have to admit that like ABS, it is as discreet as it is efficient. it is so unobtrusive that you often have to look at the instrument panel to see that it is triggered, so discreet is its action. Beautiful work as they say. Still, 900 € is not nothing and will have to be done with stiff competition. Gone are the days when Suzuki meant less. But the increase in the overall quality of models has also gone through this.

Assayer

Conclusion

Skillfully and extensively redesigned, the GSR has made serious progress in terms of finish, design and performance. It has also gained a lot in safety, thanks to the arrival of electronics and very efficient braking. We would have liked to judge her on dry asphalt so that she would reveal her dark side to us a little more, but certainly, she was born! Go and discover it in March at your dealership, it really bears the brand’s DNA and aficionados will not be disappointed.!
