In 1987, Suzuki had to replace its big sporty roadster GSX 1100 EF (a GSX 110 0ES equipped with an integral fairing). This model, which had already found itself confined to the rank of sporty road with the arrival of the GSX-R 1100, no longer had the capacity to compete with the recent Honda CBR 1000 F (1st generation) or the GPZ 1000 RX (alias Tomcat) released in 1986.
Thus, the GSX 1100 F is released, the design of which marks Suzuki’s ambition not to be fooled on the terrain of sporty road vehicles..
The engine is an evolution of the SACS 4-cylinder from its sister GSX-R. It is reworked to get more torque and power at mid-range and gains 2 millimeters of bore to reach 1127cc of displacement. The GSX-R 1100 will also switch to this displacement in 1989, being satisfied until then with a 1052cc.
The chassis is fairly classic but designed specifically for this model. The first vintage will also be quite criticized on this point. Because if the bike is manoeuvrable and well balanced (thank you for the 16-inch wheels, the low saddle and the reasonable width of the frame) and the braking without any particular criticism, the front / rear suspension tuning is not perfect. Suzuki will react in the following vintage and will offer a new geometry to the GSX-F, further accentuating its liveliness and greatly its precision in curves..
The line is in tune with the times and seems to hesitate between sportiness and Grand Tourism. And as for its competitors, the compromise is quite good, but not perfect. The bike is low and thin like a sports car, comfortable and sober like a GT, but this compromise somewhat limits the protection of the screen which, if it has the advantage of being electrically adjustable, remains a little too low and not enough. large.
The equipment, like the dashboard, is very complete but is somewhat lacking in the quality of the finish. It must be admitted that at that time, many models of the brand had this problem; Suzuki compensating with an incomparable price / performance ratio.
Commercially, the big GSX-F will accuse a lot of the small concerns of part cycle of the first model. And if by 1988 these problems were completely resolved, the image of the F remained somewhat tainted. It will remain in the catalog until 1994 (1997 for some countries) and made a discreet career alongside its blood sisters: the charismatic GSX-R and the Pullman GSX 1100 G arrived in 1991.
