GSR 1000 or Virus, some preparations could not wait for the GSX-S to quench impatient fans of Suzuk ‘mechanics. Why wait so long to get out your big, fat roadster? Crisis? Reluctance to invest? The latter still did a good job, giving the 1000 GSX-S an assertive, seasoned personality, halfway between the ball of nerves and the wrestler. The fork crown multiplies the small effects, including LED night lights in the shape of fangs. The profile is worked, with sheared scoops, a hoof all in knife blades, an exceptionally compact pot (thanks to the plenum chamber) and a posterior as inclined as a super-G track. It gives ! But to say that it shocks … Some competitors are much more aggressive. Restraint in design or application of the trend without daring? The transcendence is not there. The engines of the big Gex have always been praised for their roundness, their power and their availability. Here, we graft a proven, reliable and generous mechanism: the boiler of the GSX-R vintage 2005 to 2008. Perhaps the best 4 legs in line of the time. Today, some improvements soften its ardor to stick to a more roadsterized use while remaining sporty. Lighter pistons, the arrival of iridium spark plugs, revised camshaft profiles and recalibrated injection take care of the job, including making the mill more available in mid-revs.
In 2008, the engine of the Gex spat 185 nags. Once released, the GSX-S 1000 develops “only” 150 horsepower. Disappointment ? Ok, it is already a beautiful cavalry, very largely sufficient to have fun, and to screw in the air in the event of unmanageable optimism. But being the last to arrive and having everything to prove, we do not upset rival gangs with that. Except that these data are to be taken with relativity … various measures on the bench of international colleagues tend to prove that this block delivers more, much more. And that the bar of 160 nags would be easily crossed. Mr Suzuki, do we become a poker player and fan?!? 😉
In the end, the GSX-S 1000 is powered by spirited mechanics, but dating back a decade, and making “officially” a bunch of horsepower when the competition continues to offer watts with state-of-the-art engines (BMW S 1000 R , KTM 1290 Superduke R, Aprilia Tuono V4 1100). The Suzuki staff also plays with technology by adopting a 3-level traction control. More or less intrusive depending on the driving conditions that the pilot judges, and can be disconnected. As for driving modes and other trendy electronic refinements, we will have to wait a little longer..

We can blame an “ignition delay” as to the choice of its engine. We will not do anything about its chassis. At first glance, it’s full GSX-R between the two wheels. At 210 kilos, the machine weighs only 8 more than the GSX-R. ABS included; the panoply for braking is worthy of the best Hamamatsu machines: Brembo monobloc calipers, 310 mm track, 8 pistons in all for the front axle. To the regret of the most seasoned, the ABS cannot be deactivated. How do we handle all this? With a Renthal handlebar, fixed in front of a fully digital dashboard.
