Driving report Aprilia RXV 450/550

You feel like you’re on the first test drive A.prilia RXV 450/550 somehow reminds of a Ducati 1098. Because of the Italian design, of course. But also because of the V2 engine, whose liveliness and power simply turn on. The Aprilia two-cylinder are real enduro catapults, this applies to both displacement variants, whether 450 or 550 cubic. Both of them have more power than the average talented pilot can ever implement.

The larger variant is more suitable for single-cylinder drivers, it pulls out of the corners with more torque. In the middle, both engines are extremely explosive. It’s fun, but it makes drifting out very difficult. It is helpful that the throttle response has improved significantly compared to the delayed reaction of the previous year machines. The engine characteristics can be changed from hard to soft. The pressure on the button has a noticeable effect, which is an advantage especially with the 550 in certain situations, such as on slippery, wet stones or dusty concrete slopes. The chassis of the RXV is designed to be soft, as is typical of Enduro. What makes it easier for the pilot: The Aprilia drives incredibly smoothly and effortlessly, ironing away even tough edges in the braking zone and remains stable on course on furrowed straights. With jumps or holes of the worst category, the Marzocchi fork reaches its limits, then a little more progression would be desirable. Which can easily be done with a few cubic centimeters of fork oil.

Another parallel to the Ducati: Straight ahead, the two Aprilias can convince, but curves become ?? at least in the acclimatization phase? to the challenge. Especially those who come from the single-cylinder four-stroke have to adapt. The braking torque of the two-cylinder is as low as that of the two-stroke engine, and the fine play with gas and clutch requires a lot of experience. Factory driver Antoine Letellier shows how it’s done: full tank and always with a gentle pull. Easier said than done. The unusual chassis settings of the test machines may also have played their part. A sag of around 50 millimeters at the rear hardly improves the steering behavior, the front wheel has little traction. The high idle speed of almost 3000 rpm also required getting used to it. The latest sporting results show that the two-cylinder has offroad potential. Antoine Letellier finished second in the German Cross Country Series, and in Italy works driver Alessio Chiodi even won a run in the national cross championship.
