If you want to take it to the extreme, you should use the one-piece suit. MOTORRAD has examined what ten leather suits from 600 euros can do and whether two low-budget suits can keep up with a sporty ride.

Opponents of globalization will not really enjoy this test. With one exception, all of the leather combinations tested come from the Far East – although well-known and long-established European brand names and logos are emblazoned on most of the suits. The leather suit from the original German brand Held comes from China, just like the one from the renowned Italian label Alpinestars. And the Swiss clothing manufacturers from Ixs also rely on a production facility in China. A Swedish flag flutters on the Lindstrands one-piece, but that doesn’t change the fact that the cowhide is tailor-made in China. Only the Italian cult brand Dainese still relies on European values - although Ukraine will probably not be counted among the classic production locations on the domestic continent.

The debate can now be rekindled if one takes a closer look at the raw material leather and realizes that it has already circled half the world in the course of the manufacturing process. At the same time, there is basically little to criticize about the quality of the leather in this test. Even the two low-budget combinations from Louis and, used for comparison purposes polo can offer at least the standard that is customary in its class, with the Firefox combo it’s even a bit more.
Together with tanner Andreas Oettrich, MOTORRAD took a closer look at the quality of the leather. The leather specialist’s credo: “Above all, leather has to be stable. It softens by itself with good care.” Not all combinations in this test withstood his practiced thumb stroke, in which he let a crease slide through his thumb and forefinger. A structure made of small pieces (Probiker, Vanucci) was just as critical of his comments as mistakes in the quality selection. Not only hero and Ixs afford some rough blunders by processing inferior leather parts such as those from the belly flap.
At Dainese, too, the leather quality fluctuates with so-called loose-grain areas that would be more suitable as lining leather. The picture is much better with Alpinestars, Berik and Arlen Ness, where the leather shows a strong, uniform image across the board. But good leather alone does not make a good combination. Here, tailoring know-how is primarily required. Especially with the one-piece, which not only depends on a snug fit, but also on a high degree of mobility. The chaff separates from the wheat during the dry test. Leather suits that are already hanging from the hanger like a wet sack will plague the wearer with a noticeable loss of comfort when sitting in a sporty position.
Overalls that already look heavily like a race before the locker room promise significantly more comfort. You shouldn’t be put off by the unruly on and off procedure. Not even from the fact that you will be walking around like the hunchbacked Quasimodo in the future. It is more important that it fits with your knees sharply bent and your upper body bent far over the tank. The comfort of tight-fitting one-piece suits is impressively demonstrated in this test. Even the suits by Arlen Ness and Berik, which are designed for hardcore racing, can compete with well-fitting touring suits in terms of comfort. They also have the advantage that the protectors surround the joints well and stay in place in the event of a fall.
But here we are approaching the most sensitive topic in this test. Protectors are in every suit and all of them also meet the requirements of the EN 1621-1 standard. (But let’s get to the big one “but”. Almost all test participants offered minimal protection by enclosing shoulders, elbows and knees with standard-compliant protectors. But nothing else can be expected. Only Hein Gericke, the cheapest combination in the regular test field, offers a full protection package with protectors on the hips and back. With all others, you either have to retrofit it yourself or, in the absence of an option, even do without.
It is actually incomprehensible that the suits, which are uncompromisingly geared towards racing, go wrong so blatantly. One more look at the Gericke station wagon shows that it cannot be a question of price. Another indication reveals that the commercial red pen still ruled here: Often, protectors with a small protective surface are used in the shoulders, which can be recognized by the marking “Type a”. From an ergonomic and biomechanical point of view, such protectors are only intended for children or small women and therefore have no place in a men’s clothing size 52 (or L). Before some people think about retrofitting: the pockets and cut are usually adapted to exactly this size. Only an experienced leather tailor can adapt a protector that is appropriate to your own size. Stefan Rottger (www.skill-skin.com) always has an open ear for anyone who wants to have their desired combination upgraded accordingly.
There is no real scolding with the test bench results of the protectors. After all, they all stay within the norm. Nevertheless, something has to be criticized. According to the standard, 35 kilonewtons (kN) of residual force are permitted, which on average may remain when a five-kilogram falling body hits from a height of one meter. The measurement results of protectors, the residual force of which only fluctuates between ten and 15 kN, show that the value from the 1990s is now hopelessly outdated. According to MOTORRAD information, a revision of the standard is about to be ratified. Similar to the EN 1621-2 standard for back protectors, there will be a second, more stringent limit value, which will presumably be 20 kN. By then, at the latest, some manufacturers will have to worry about whether their old-school protectors with a residual force of 25 to 30 kN are still wearable. Nevertheless, the following still applies: Always stay up there.

Ideal test combination: Triumph Daytona 675 plus country road in Provence.
The MOTORRAD leather suit test consisted of extensive test rounds on the winding country roads of Provence and a laboratory check of the protectors. The following points were checked and assessed:

The testers moved out on a Triumph Daytona 675 and evaluated the one-piece suits in different sizes in practice: Are the arm and leg lengths sufficient, does the collar squeeze, does it tighten on the back, does it pinch when sitting? Does the suit hang down like a wet sack or does it smoothly follow all the movements of the driver during sporting activities?
Security:
How is accident protection going? For this purpose, the protectors, among other things, were carefully examined: Are the sizes correct, are they exactly positioned, are they tight and secure against slipping, and enclose the joints adequately? On the drop test stand, based on the EN 1621-1 standard, it was checked how the protectors’ damping capacity is. Further points in the test protocol: the quality of seams and reinforcements.

The one-piece can be easily and comfortably slipped on and impresses on the motorcycle with a successful fit and a comfortable, supple fit – even on a sporty ride with many transfer maneuvers. The incisive collar and pressure points on the armpits are only annoying in an extremely stooped position. Thanks to the perforated upper body, plenty of fresh air is fed into the station wagon on hot days of driving.
Security:
Shoulder, elbow and knee protectors are positioned precisely and secure against slipping and remain below the limit value during the impact test. But some of the equipment is too small, the hips are only thinly padded, and chest and back protectors are subject to a surcharge.

The combination pleases with its high-quality, clean workmanship, attractive details and strong leather with a uniform grain structure.
Conclusion:
Classically cut sports suit that scores with its great fit, smooth fit and attractive workmanship. The safety cushion is okay, but the equipment should still improve.

Care and patience are required when getting in and out. Otherwise, you can quickly get tangled up in the lining of the one-piece that is extremely shaped to fit your body. On the motorcycle, the tightly fitting combination turns out to be a 1A leotard, which smoothly follows all movements even when you are forced to corner. Even with a mercilessly stooped driving position, there is no loss of comfort.

Shoulder, elbow and knee protectors are positioned precisely and secure against slipping. There are small losses in comfort with the shoulder protectors, which have too small a protective surface, but remain within the limit in the impact test. The chest, hips and thighs are padded, but there are no other upgrade options for protectors.

The processing, especially inside, is sometimes careless. But the strong leather with its beautiful grain structure scores points.
Conclusion:
The leotard for the motorcycle. Not only does it feel extremely light, it is also extremely light to wear. And thanks to the wonderfully supple leather, you can take part in every curve dance. Only putting it on and taking it off remains extremely difficult.

Care is required when dressing so that arms and legs do not get tangled in the mesh lining. But then the one-piece convinces with a crisp and precise fit. The supple leather never constricts, even with super sporty lines right down to the hanging-off. Particularly great: the flawlessly crafted joints on the sleeves and legs. The width adjustment on the calves provides extra comfort.

Shoulder, elbow and knee protectors sit perfectly and slip-proof in place. In the impact test, these remain in the green area, although the protective surfaces are in some cases too small in relation to the size of the clothing. The foam pads on the hips can be exchanged for CE protectors, a back protector must be worn separately.

The leather of the Berik one-piece suits with its firm grip and its uniform quality. However, the processing is only mediocre.
Conclusion:
Ultra-stable racing suit with a perfectly pre-curved structure. As if made for time filing during race training. The consistently handsome leather, however, deserves a slightly better workmanship.

The one-piece from Dainese slip over. The easy-to-grip and clean-running zippers also collect special plus points. The slightly pre-curved cut fits like a glove on sports bikes à la Triumph Daytona 675. The station wagon follows the rider’s movements smoothly. Only if you are extremely stooped does it press lightly on your shoulders and neck area. The wide leg ends require a special boot solution.

Shoulders, elbows and knees are protected by twist-proof and neatly fitted protectors. The impact test remains within the scope of what is permitted, but the protective surfaces are sometimes too small. The hips and chest are padded, a back protector must be worn separately.

The processing is successful, the leather quality is only mixed.
Conclusion:
Rossi’s house brand & Co. can also score powerfully in the entry-level area. The sporty design also cuts a fine figure in everyday use thanks to its comfortable seat. Small weak point: the leaps in quality in leather.

When it comes to dressing and undressing speed, the Gericke station wagon will quickly put you on the podium. On board, however, the tight, precise fit that other one-piece suits convey is missing. This is particularly annoying when cornering, where it is uncomfortable on the back when bent over and cuts into the crook of the arm. The station wagon sits much more comfortably on sporty laps on the home track.
Security:
The equipment with CE protectors is exemplary. The Gericke one-piece is not only equipped with the usual impact absorbers in the shoulders, elbows and knees. The hips and back are also covered by full-fledged protectors – although the back protection ends high above the rump (see photo above left). On the test bench, the protectors shine with first-class values.
Equipment and processing:
Grippy leather, beautifully processed down to the last detail. Like that.
Conclusion:
A sports overall for every day. The bottom line is that the Gericke one-piece turns out to be more of a converted touring suit than a racing suit designed for sporty use. There is nothing better when it comes to protectors.

The Held-Kombi can also be put on fluffy and comfortably. Overall, the fit is good, despite the structural proximity to the one-pieces Arlen Ness and Berik (same manufacturer!) the Held suit lacks the sporty, crisp fit. The bottom line is that there are small details that disrupt the all-round feel-good factor, such as the pressure points on the bulging arm and leg ends.
Security:
Held offers the usual safety scheme with CE protectors in shoulders, elbows and knees. Here too, sizes that are too small are sometimes used. On the test bench, the shock absorption results remain within the framework, but without the aha experience. The hip pad is sewn and cannot be replaced with full-fledged CE protection, a back protector must be worn separately.
Equipment and processing:
The leather quality is only mixed, the workmanship plus detailed equipment with titanium protectors, however, succeeded.
Conclusion:
Sporty suit that corresponds more to everyday requirements. For a real racing suit, the Held-Kombi lacks the uncompromising sports layout. The quality look is tarnished by the partly inferior leather.

Be careful with the size information, the Ixon station wagon turns out small. Patience is required when getting dressed. It sits like a second skin on a sports motorcycle, but mobility is severely restricted. Sports exercises including hanging-off are difficult to implement. Despite the soft neoprene trimmings, it rubs against the sleeves. Pressure points on the shoulders and armpits are annoying.
Security:
The protectors are positioned precisely and securely against twisting. CE-standardized protection is built into the shoulders, elbows and knees, hip and back pads can be exchanged for real protectors. The impact test results remain in the green area.

The leather pleases with its strong, uniform structure, the workmanship is sometimes quite coarse.
Conclusion:
Sports suit without comfort padding, but with numerous expansion options for CE protectors. The strong leather with a uniform grain structure is a highlight. Incomprehensible: A hefty surcharge is due for knee sliders.

The supple leather can be comfortably slipped on and fits perfectly in all sizes tested. When driving, the leather overall impresses with its great fit and can be used in all driving postures, including an extremely stooped race position, without pinching or pinching. The smooth seat restricts contact with the motorcycle too much, a little more “Seat meat” would look good on the station wagon. The coccyx reinforcement is also annoying in the long run.

The first hurdle: putting on the Silverstone one-piece, in which the feet quickly get tangled in the lining and the zippers quickly push open again. The fit is problematic with many sizes. The station wagon throws massive folds on the sleeves and knees. Comfort also suffers as a result: Pressure points in the crook of the arm and hollow of the knee are the result. Thanks to well thought-out stretch inserts, the suit is highly mobile and anything but restrictive.
Security:
Shoulders, elbows and knees are enclosed by CE protectors in the correct sizes, a retrofit kit for CE protectors is included for the padded hips. The impact absorbers are positioned to prevent them from slipping, but they rub uncomfortably over the long term. The impact test values remain within reasonable limits, but are not particularly outstanding. A back protector must be worn separately.

Top marks: a great, grippy leather and a great workmanship.
Conclusion:
Visually, the Lindstrands one-piece can make a powerful impression. Titanium grinder and white lining look like much more than 640 euros. However, the wearer has to accept a number of losses in comfort.

It is still easy to get into the one-piece, but then comfort is over. The station wagon hangs on the body as heavy as a bag and forces the wearer into a rigid basic posture from which it is hardly possible to exercise. The sleeves rub against the wrists, the bulging leg ends are difficult to accommodate in the shaft of a sports boot. The station wagon is much more comfortable to wear when touring in everyday life.
Security:
CE protectors are used in the shoulders, elbows and knees, hips and back can be retrofitted with CE-compliant protection. On the test bench, the protectors used in the correct sizes show top performance with a damping capacity well below the permitted limit.
Equipment and processing:
The high-quality leather is pieced together from many small parts, plus there are many features that make the combination difficult.
Conclusion:
More like a touring leather suit converted into a one-piece than a light suit for hardcore racers. the Vanucci Above all, there is a lack of mobility. But it scores with a powerful protector kit.

Conclusion
A home game for the brands that are at home in racing. The entry-level model from Dainese shines with a fit that you are used to from top-of-the-range models that are twice as expensive. And at the same time shows that a one-piece suit can also be really comfortable. The same applies to the comfortable suits from Ixs and Alpinestars. The almost identical station wagons from Arlen Ness and Berik are much more uncompromisingly trimmed for tough sports use. The extra praise, however, goes to Hein Gericke, who starts off with full protection equipment.

One piece under 300 euros
A one-piece for less than 300 euros? It is hard to imagine that offers of this kind come from reputable addresses and are not sold in some grabber corner on Ebay and Co. The question remains whether polo and Louis do a favor with it. After all, one-piece suits are asked by drivers who have very specific demands on their outfit – i.e. use them primarily for sporty driving. Accordingly, the basic layout of the suit should take this into account. But that doesn’t work if the one-pieces hang on the hangers like wet sacks. And the periphery should also be well thought out: Does the transition to the gloves and boots fit? Both low-budget station wagons are annoying with technical weaknesses and sometimes gross blunders. You are much better positioned when it comes to material quality. The Firefox combo in particular scores with a decent leather quality, that of the Probiker suit is by and large still okay. On the other hand, massive savings are made on the equipment side. Even the knee sliders typical of the genre are only available at an additional cost.

You will look in vain for a cut that is pre-curved for sports drivers on Firefox. The one-piece hangs dead straight on the hanger, and when you slip into it (comparatively easily), you have to work out the athletic stooped posture. This is at the expense of the feel-good factor. The extremely long sleeves throw creases and cut into the armpits and the crook of the arm. Pressure points are also programmed into the bulky leg ends.
Security:
With shoulder, elbow and knee protectors, the cheap combination also follows the standard in its class. The hips and back can optionally be upgraded with CE-compliant protective pads. The protective surfaces are sufficiently large and the impact test results are okay.
Equipment and processing:
The leather is consistently of good, respectable quality and strength. The red pen rules the rest of the equipment.
Conclusion:
Hire and fire? Real sports enthusiasts will not be happy with the Firefox on the bike. The one-piece is still reasonably comfortable to wear when standing, but woe betide that movement comes into play. But it’s true with the leather and the protectors.

The struggle begins as soon as you get dressed. Without a helping hand, the cheapest one-piece can hardly be slipped on in the test. You will look in vain for a cut designed for sporty use. The long, wide-cut sleeves are in stark contrast to the almost corset-like torso. And the long, protruding trouser legs can only be stowed away in boots with plenty of pressure points. In the absence of a pre-curved cut, there is pressure on the neck when the person is sporty.
Security:
The shoulders, elbows and knees of the station wagon are equipped with CE protectors. The impact test values are good, but sizes that are too small are sometimes used. CE protectors can be retrofitted on the hips and back.
Equipment and processing:
Like the rest of the equipment, the leather quality is mixed, the workmanship is still okay.
Conclusion:
A one-piece for less than 240 euros? The Louis bargain clearly lacks functionality. In principle, the Probiker is more of a touring suit that does not have a connection zipper.

A residual force of 35 kilonewtons is permitted. Technically feasible today is far less.
According to the European standard EN 1621-1, joint protectors may allow a maximum of 35 kilonewtons of residual force to pass through in the impact test. Biomechanically a proud figure. After all, bones can break even under significantly less stress. The limit value itself is no longer a problem for serious sellers: In the MOTORRAD impact test on the Sas-Tec test bench (www.sas-tec.de), all protectors remained below the permissible limit value. It is interesting to look at the different courses of the impact. With hard shell protectors like the one from Dainese, a steep increase in force is typical, while soft foam protectors distribute the force over a long period of time.

Where to put the pant leg with the one-piece?
Combining the one-piece with matching boots can sometimes be a painful test of patience. Problems are to be expected above all with knee protectors, which also cover large parts of the shins. Sports boots with a high, stiff shaft can hardly be closed in such cases. What to do? A relatively complex option would be to shorten the protector accordingly. However, the protector pocket would then also have to be modified so that the impact absorber cannot move. Option two: sports boots with which the shin protection can be variably adjusted. Recommendation: the Daytona Evo Sports sports boots (394.95 euros from Detlev Louis).
