Does an enduro really need 150 hp?
Content of
R is racing. It’s no different with KTM than with other brands, only that KTM also makes the difference between normal people and racing crazy people in the dirt. So also with the Adventure R.?
In front of me the dust cloud from Supermoto crack Gilles Salvador, below me deep gravel, muddy furrows and sandy forest floor in the middle of the Vosges. My first use in real enduro terrain, and with a weight of 235 kilos, the new one KTM 1190 Adventure R – great. The sweat runs down my eyes. Every time it moves the front wheel and I think I’m already on the next tree, it pushes the liter out of my pores. But it’s also fun, sometimes huge fun. Standing on the pegs, the complex electronics with ABS and traction control in off-road mode allow you to move quickly through the forest.

Does an enduro really need 150 hp?
The KTM 1190 Adventure R is much closer to the off-road than the standard version – it has 30 millimeters of travel at both the front and rear. The R-handlebar is also wider (20 mm) and fits in the hand like a motocross bar. And the narrow rims with the 21-inch front wheel also exude that Dakar touch that the 990s generally had in the past and the KTM abandoned for the standard version in the fight against the BMW R 1200 GS. So if you really want to leave the road more often, you should get the R. But you have to wait, because the model series for 2013 is already sold out.

The chassis of the KTM 1190 Adventure R is fully adjustable – but only by hand.
As new as off-road use is, as exhausting as you should have the handlebars firmly under control, the KTM 1190 Adventure R feels that good. This is mainly due to the engine, which accelerates really gently and is wonderfully controllable. The V2 offers almost 100 PS in off-road mode and its character is easy on the nerves of the enduro novice as far as the terrain allows. The ABS does that too, because the anti-lock device works like in the standard Adventure depending on the driving mode and brakes gently at the rear if you just grab the lever at the front, as is the street driver.
When we turn back into such a furrowed forest path after a short stretch of country road, I unfortunately can’t find the right mode right away and now try desperately to stay with the leadership team. Now, however, the twin of the KTM 1190 Adventure R pushes with its full 150 hp and, paired with bitter curses skywards, one wonders why for heaven’s sake an Enduro needs 150 hp? Skiers would probably say because it’s a lot of fun. But the spinning and constantly smearing rear wheel makes me weary in view of the deep valley view without a safety fence!

Part-time enduro riders will appreciate the Adventure
But Gilles finally has some understanding or he is simply running out of legal off-road assets, in any case, well-paved roads in the French low mountain range now follow. Here the 150 PS finally make sense, and the V2 exudes its power with charm. Even open, the power can be precisely metered. Nothing jerks when you apply the gas via drive-by-wire. Nevertheless, there is also an animal in the 1190. All you have to do is press the sport mode, then the KTM 1190 Adventure R accelerates like hell, floods you with torque from idle and the ABS doesn’t actually regulate at all. At least not on the mounted Conti-Trail Attack, which offers good grip despite the narrow enduro dimensions. The traction control hardly has to intervene either, it only makes itself felt once, but clearly and effectively on cobblestones.
The damping of the chassis, which cannot be configured electronically in contrast to the standard version, is much more noticeable – and negative. The road sweeper, tried and tested in sports, sees himself sailing over the handlebars while anchoring heavily, the front nods down that deep. It’s nice that you can easily adjust the compression and rebound stage using the adjusting wheel in each fork leg. This clearly minimizes the movements, but again clearly reveals the basic character of the KTM 1190 Adventure R, because the long spring travel should not be domesticated for hard braking on the road, but should work flawlessly in the event of hits or even jumps. Part-time enduro riders will definitely appreciate this.
