IMOT 2012 in Munich: Innovations and highlights of the fair

Almost the opposite of Ducati Harley Davidson represent. The Americans are going for relaxation and were among the winners of 2011, but they still didn’t sit idle and have now pulled six new bikes out of the hat. In all Softails except for the new Blackline, the Big Twin is now at work with 1.690 cubic centimeter displacement. The Dyna series is modernized to Can-Bus electronics and gets ABS. After a short break, the Sportster 1200 Custom returns to the range with the front wheel shrunk to 16 inches. In addition, the Ultra Classic Elektra Glide is coming back to Germany. Noteworthy is the Jubilee Model V-Rod 10th Anniversary, a color variant of the Night Rod Special with newly coordinated struts rear, upside down fork and lighter cast wheels.
Right something is going on Honda. Not only was that the SuperSportler Fireblade had an update with modernized optics, they also donated casting wheels, a big-piston fork and a laptimer. In the middle class, the Japanese with the 700 series bring three low-priced bikes, all of which build on the same, newly developed engine chassis combination. The NC 700 S is an all-rounder with rowzweizylindermotor and 48 hp, which will cost 5500 euros. The sister NC 700 X comes with longer truck, 790 mm seat height and has a somewhat reluctant appearance. It costs 5990 euros. Both models are also supplied with double-clutch transmissions and 52 hp for a surcharge for 1000 euros. The concept is also based on the scooter Integra. All Hondas over 125 cubics own from 2012 ABS as standard. But that’s not all: The travel enduro Crosstourer with V4 engine based on the VFR 1200 F replaces the veteran Varadero. It also drives with an optional dual-clutch transmission and comes with many electronic aids. It should – how could it be otherwise – make life difficult for the BMW R 1200 GS and costs from 13,490 euros.
Long announced, the resurgent brand is sending Horex a first bike on the streets. Not as advertised with the supercharged VR6 engine, but the aspirating 117 kW/160 hp from six cylinders are not bad either. The roadster comes with the finest finish, aluminum bridge frame, ABS and a spring price of 21,700 euros.
Another traditional brand, which is now under the BMW umbrella, was a little faster: already at the end of 2011 Husqvarna presented his Nuda 900 (also as an R version), a slim speedster for narrow and winding roads, which is powered by a 77 kW/105 hp in-line two-cylinder, the basis of which comes from the F 800 R. The R version additionally has an adjustable fork and a Ohlins strut. ABS is unfortunately not yet.
A fireworks burn Kawasaki 2012. So recently, the Crossover Versys 1000, a mixture of the four-cylinder of the Z 1000, a 17-inch suspension, the styling of the small Versys and 17-liter tank. Also thanks to rich tour accessories, the journey should face glossy and the strong competitors market share. Kawasaki has reciprocated the Big-Bike-Boliden ZZR 1400, which now activates 147 kW / 200 hp. These are braked by a traction control and adjustable power input (POWER MODE). A new cockpit provides information about the systems, gears and temperatures. The price: 15.595 Euro. The bestsellers ER 6n and f were also fine-tuned, which received a more pleasing look and a new cockpit, as well as being slimmer and stiffer. The bare n costs 6995 euros, the f 7495 euros.
KTM devoted himself primarily to his smaller models. The 690 Duke was revised and fitted with the engine from the previous R version, supplemented by dual ignition. The single-cylinder delivers 52 kW/70 hp and in connection with the low weight of 160 kilograms, cornering should be a pleasure. The Freeride 350 is ideal for moderate off-roaders, which has adopted the engine of the 350 EXC-F in its new bridge frame and combines it with an ultra-short gear ratio. The price: 6995 euros. If you need even less, you can go for the 200 Duke with 19 kW/26 hp and an unladen weight of 127 kilograms. The 690 SMC R also comes across as crisp, which combines 49 kW/67 hp with a weight of only 140 kilograms and should go off accordingly on winding roads. It costs 8495 euros.
Moto Guzzi has taken on the V7 engine and the bikes that roll with it. According to the company, the engine has been completely renovated. Equipped with 38 kW/51 hp, it now drives the renewed V7 as well as the V7 Specialm, the V7 Racer and the Nevada 750.
Sporty drivers with exclusive taste look forward to the MV Augusta F3/Oro. Powered by an in-line three-cylinder, the chic racer delivers 93 kW/126 hp, comes with a whole range of electronic helpers, weighs 185 kilograms and has a record-breaking wheelbase of 1.380 millimeters. The price for the noble part has not yet been determined, but should be around 12.000 euros lie.
It’s less spectacular Suzuki to. The facelifted V-Strom was presented in the summer of 2011, now the Japanese are pushing the revised GSX-R 1000. Above all, the racer has become lighter, now weighing only 205 kilos, and its brakes and optics have been revised. Unfortunately, Suzuki does not donate its super athlete electronic helper, so that he is likely to be difficult for the upgraded competition.
Also at triumph a GS competitor is in the starting blocks, the Tiger 1200 Explorer. The travel enduro costs 13.790 euros and is therefore cheaper than the Bavarian, comes with its own and more powerful three-cylinder engine, but also weighs a few kilos more. Traction control is on board, as is electronic throttle response. However, an electronically adjustable chassis is missing. The well-known Speed Triple, which was revised last year, is now accompanied by the R version. Ohlins chassis and Brembo brakes, some carbon and a red rear frame characterize the R. The surcharge is 2.500 euros, the machine costs around 14.990 euros. The sharpened Daytona was presented in the middle of last year.
Not much happened at Yamaha. Only the super athlete YZF-R1 received a revision, is now more aggressive, has a six-stage traction control, revised mapping, new footpegs and new upper fork bridge.
Conclusion: The new season should be interesting. One may be curious whether the market continues to develop positively and which of the many novelties conquer the hearts of the customers. Anyone who wants to look at the novelties can do this by the way on various spring fairs, for example at the iMot in Munich of 17. until 19. February.

  1. The part on picture 32 …
is pretty much that I have ever seen on 2 wheels, and the rest is too … Not much better – I’m glad I still have my 2 old 750 Bonnies (BJ 81 and 82!)!

  2. Addendum, …
Sorry, I meant picture 34, not picture 32!
