Tiger Sport 2016 test: the Triumph of eclecticism
Are you very much for eclecticism? Triumph yes, since since 2007 the Tiger 1050 combines the heart of a roadster and the attitude of a road trail. A dose of sport was added in 2013 and the new Tiger Sport 2016 is even more complete. Test.
Triumph polishes its 1050 super bike
While making its grand tour between St-Paul-de-Vence (06) and the Gorges du Verdon, Site did not detect any changes in the dynamic behavior of the Tiger Sport. And for good reason : "the frame and the running gear have not moved because they bring complete satisfaction to customers", confides us during the lunch David Lopez, pilot-engineer in charge of the development of the parts cycles at Triumph. Even the most" sporty "customers? According to him, yes.
"Big" Daytona fault – "the current sports market has blocked our investments in the Superbike segment", regrets our interlocutor – and lack of Sprint 1050 (ST or GT, both disappeared from the Triumph France catalog), the Tiger Sport is the only" super bike "offered to date by Hinckley. MNC thus had fun tickling the tigress…
The Tiger Sport does not like to be pushed around like a Superbike on the circuit. In this case, mass transfers limit the precision of the trajectories. The high weight slows down the passage from one angle to another in the series of small turns. The Triumph is a little physical to take there despite its large handlebars and its 17-inch wheel at the front.
The fork’s dive under braking or the shock’s compression under acceleration will also seem too much for the bleeding riders. But they are free to re-study the settings of their suspensions according to their level and their weight. !
Site, for its part, did not play with the compressions, detents and prestressing of "his" Tiger Sport, too satisfied with the very good balance offered by the factory settings, at least for a fully equipped 75 kg pilot wishing ride "quietly to the bottom" !
Neither more nor less sporty than before therefore, the Tiger Sport crunches medium to very large curves with an insatiable appetite. Perfectly stable, it even accepts that the pilot takes the brakes a little – rear or front if necessary – to correct a trajectory. Its ground clearance remains clearly sufficient.
Likewise, its original footwear responds very well to its program: the Pirelli Angel ST gave us good grip in the dry and behaved reassuringly on the wet sections that we encountered on the road..
Beware of course of the white stripes and zebra crossings, where the tires do not perform miracles and are perfectly supported by the ABS and traction control. On degraded roads or in cobbled streets, the suspensions ensure permanent contact with the ground, while saving the rider’s buttocks and back wonderfully..
The English Tigress also facilitates and calms the life of its tamer by integrating both a 12V socket and a USB socket. It accepts to house a disc lock in a compartment under the saddle and plans to accommodate, in the saddle this time, a U available in the official accessories catalog.
The owner of the Tiger Sport is also requested to go to the accessories section "Protection" to acquire the central stand (count 240 € and 42 minutes of labor exactly!) Which will help him maintain his chain. They are not cool, these English.
We already regret that Triumph has not planned a GT pack (or "XRCA" something ?!) comprising at a lower cost the central stand, the comfort saddle, the heated grips and the complete luggage for example. In 2017, maybe ?
In the meantime, from a finishing point of view, customers are getting their money’s worth. They will certainly not tire of detailing their motorcycle: Triumph has further increased the markings on its parts, affixed a rear wheel axle cover, slightly spangled the crankcases, darkened the protection of the exhaust and installed pretty mirrors….
Only the cockpit trim is a bit "light" and does not sufficiently hide the unsightly jar of raw plastic coolant. It is also a pity that the gray fender of the pre-series "Aluminum" model unveiled in February is finally painted black..
The two 2016 colorways and their new graphics are meant to modernize the look – unchanged – of the Tiger Sport. We have to admit that the few strokes of pencils and brushes give the bike a welcome touch of dynamism..
Placed by Triumph at 13,300 € in France, the price of the Tiger Sport only climbs by 310 euros compared to the official price of the previous Tiger Sport. Compared to the 2013 model, however, the difference reaches 810 euros. ABS was already standard, but traction-control and engine modes were absent, while the high screen and handguards were optional … The prices of competing motorcycles were also lower. !
Compared to the competition therefore, the Tiger Sport 2016 matches its price on that of the "Adventure" (therefore fully equipped). It is 600 euros above the "tout court" and 300 euros below the. Here are the three motorcycles that the new Triumph is openly targeting.
Site will add to this non-exhaustive list the (from € 16,300), the (€ 17,890 minimum) … and the, also equipped with a 3-cylinder, offered at the price of € 10,199 and curiously obscured by Triumph officials. They are not crazy, these English !
