The roads are no longer walked in a jacket but in a costume. Before shaking up this loose and playful land, what philosopher would question himself? Who invented the scrambler? What do we know about its origins? Triumph knows how to shed light on its past and its influence in this category. However, each renowned brand surfing the retro finds a more or less influential trace in its history. We will never really know who; because the first inventors were certainly anonymous enthusiasts who created the first scrambler somewhere in a dilapidated garage with a few parts, a hacksaw and a lot of ingenuity.
Let’s move on – that’s not how we’re going to find out where the first of its kind was born. Above all, it would be damn far from this 1200 Scrambler that Triumph concocted for us. After having sharpened the teeth of its Street Scrambler, the manufacturer added to its catalog an adventurer of stronger caliber; and of more noble consistency. Since 2006 and the release of the 865, most of its enthusiasts have wanted something more fulfilling, able to satisfy their cravings for vigor. This is enough to satisfy them, and thereby come polish the R Nine-T analog name.
Little daring but quality and mimicry in the silhouette. This 1200 is modeled on the 900, with this typical signature that are the two side exhaust submachine guns. Copy but not paste as the machine gives off a much more marked precious perception. Very quickly, we understand that the two machines do not play in the same court … or on the same ground.
Let’s dig into the bowels right away, see what the big twin wedged at 270 ° offers us. Borrowed from the Bonneville T120, it has been specially revised for the Scrambler in order to develop a power that is specific to it. A respectable 90 horsepower set at 7400 rpm, which is 10 horsepower more than the Bonnie and 25 above the Street Scrambler; not too many watts either so as not to annoy the Thruxton, Hinckley’s neo-retro sports car, riding with an advantage of 7 nags. At BM, we are not yet worried, the NineT flying over these figures with 110 units leaving the Boxer.
The couple compete and are no exception. Its 11.2 mkg promises to be strong, much more eloquent than the 8.2 of the average Scrambler. With this well filled block, what awaits as derailed for the tread tire? 38% more potato than the 900. Nice revivals in prospect, whether on asphalt or forest playgrounds.
With the Scrambler definition, this kind of word implies that it can trudge all over the place, like a roadster in the fields. A stone, scratches, a few swerves and we put a layer back. Except that by taking 1200 on the flanks, the machine also changes category and equipment level. Triumph is no joke, ensuring premium both in stature and in equipment. The brake calipers are enough to calm everyone down: Brembo M50 – crisp 320mm tracks. On the handlebars of a motorcycle wrapping the roads and fields, the pilot can count on gear worthy of a hypersport. The tone is set.
So the bike would be tempted by performance? Those for his name anyway. With its raised exhausts, its spoked rims, its mixed shoes and its aluminum protective shoe, the Triumph respects the codes of the genre much more than most of its competitors. It also promises more off-road capacity with a surprising suspension travel: 200 mm, front and rear. Figures that you don’t even see on a 1200 Explorer XC. The saddle height also feels the effects, with an altitude of 840 mm.
With its 21-inch front wheel, the machine does not pretend to cut into the excursion; while still reserving beautiful chassis elements. Like an inverted 45mm fork, a duo of Ohlins shocks and a sturdy as new aluminum swingarm. With all this and a new frame, this 1200 Scrambler has taken a big independence from the Bonneville. Something to eat from the road at breakfast and mud at noon.
Almost an adventure bike this Scrambler? Close certainly, and very technologico-electronic. The equipment list does not only offer refinement to the 1200. It is also a real provocation for the competitors, in its category and elsewhere. Where to start ? The 3-level disconnectable ABS linked to the Riding Modes, full LED lighting, keyless start, deactivatable traction control or the USB socket under the saddle? It’s just an appetizer.
Another highlight of this machine is the adoption of a 2nd generation color TFT instrument panel with dual display theme. Rather sober and compact but teeming with information. Do you have a smartphone? The possibilities of interaction with the meter are formidable. Once you have purchased the optional Bluetooth connectivity module, you can pair the device to control music, volume, calls from the handlebars … and a step-by-step navigation system. Triumph has partnered with Google to develop a guidance app. Once the route has been selected, the direction indications are displayed on the instrument panel screen in the form of icons. The pilot thus has navigation, a route calculator, the display of the final destination and points of interest..
Not bad, and there are still some in stock. Still with the Bluetooth module, it is possible to control a GoPro from the control unit. More practical to bring back memories of the ride; on condition that you benefit more from driving than from sharing it…
The Scrambler is also equipped with cruise control, backlit stems, and 5 driving modes. Such as: Road, Rain, Off-Road, Sport and the rider configurable mode, which adapts throttle response and ABS and traction control settings to suit their preferences and driving conditions . A lot but not all; Triumph still has some under the rod but reserves a series of additional equipment for the XE version.
The manufacturer is playing upbeat in on-board technology, anxious to gain the upper hand over its favorite Bavarian rival. But also in the finish, the pieces that appeal, the waltz of qualitative adjectives. Forget the joystick for a moment, the displays, the apps … Take a look instead at the Monza-type cap, the brushed stainless steel tank strap, this perforated gearbox cover, this barely calming motorcycle. his pride.
At this moment, once discovered, one dares a little less to take him immediately in the gadin. No need to look at the price, we quickly understood that it was going to hit. The weight a little less, with 205 kilos.
With this muscular and plentiful version of the Scrambler, Triumph takes the concept to the next level. Beautiful machine, expensive, rewarding for the owner while promising great abilities. In addition to the slew of accessories to decorate it, two kits allow you to create an atmosphere:
The “Escape” kit is oriented towards a touring spirit thanks to a selection of accessories including,
– A reinforced bag with mounting kit
