Maybe, like me, you went wrong in interpreting the GT designation of the Rocket III here. Were we going to discover the descendants of the Rocket III Touring? Would the Hinckley bull thus be equipped with everything necessary for long stages or stays? ? No. No windshield, no suitcases, no top case, no fridge. So what ? “Simply” enough to drive more relaxed. More equipment, a few ergonomic differences, and little extras for the passenger.
At first glance, the GT seems especially equipped for the duo. But Triumph goes further than that. Everything is in the detail, in the finish, in the attention paid to certain elements. On the R as on the GT, the wheels are enormous (150 wide at the front and 240 at the rear); on the other hand, the rim sticks are machined on the GT. By getting on board, we will really hit on THE difference of this Rocket III GT. On its sister, the driving position could be similar to that of a roadster. Here, we change universe. The footrests are positioned much further forward, almost in contact with the oil cooler. The handlebars take the opposite path. Larger, its branches push back the handles at the level of the middle of the tank. Add to that a lower saddle of 23 mm (750 mm) and you have a seat / handlebar / wheelchair-style triangle. Calibrated for cruising. With an ounce of adaptation. The passenger backrest is height-adjustable, while the foot controls offer three position choices: standard, forward + 25mm, or backward – 25mm. The GT concludes its good graces with typical Touring seats, a set of heated grips as standard and a small windscreen. All of this has to be paid for on the scale. It weighs 3 kilos more than the R. But hey … when you show 294 kg dry, what do you care about 6 pounds more or less. It would be better to remember that this generation of Rocket III gained no less than 40 kilos over the previous one..
Especially since there is enough power in the engine to tow a stranded ox. A huge three-cylinder, stuffed to the brim with torque. It sends up to 22.4 mkg, much more than any big block from Harley or Indian. Power is less impressive than the cubing would suggest, but still stands at 167 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. The mechanical, technical and electronic attributes between the Rocket GT and R are identical. This delirious engine, its devilish and striking look with the double optics, this spooky front axle with an inverted 47 mm fork, a tire as wide as both hands and Brembo M50 Stylema brake calipers that we find on the Panigale V4, its crazy oscillating single-sided arm and all its panoply of assistance.
On the Triumph we find a second generation TFT instrument panel with two types of display and improved functions, along with the possibility of putting its name in the boot theme. An inertial unit takes place, allowing active ABS when cornering and greater efficiency of traction control. There is also hill start aid, four Riding Modes (Rain, Road, Sport, Rider), full LED lighting, cruise control, keyless start and locking, a USB socket and .. . little surprises when you get (optional) the Bluetooth connectivity module. Triumph has taken care to tempt the techno enthusiast with an accessories department including a GoPro control system. What also to have a pairing of his smartphone and a simplified GPS navigation. A shifter is also on the racks, as is a tire pressure check. Search a little more and you will find about fifty products in the stock.
Except among extravagant craftsmen going to prick engines on planes or cars, it is impossible to find in series another cocktail of power, torque, cruising and majesty. Well almost … The other possibility is called Rocket III TFC, the high-end expression of this cruiser.
