A.Skilled artisans are all the rage. SUVs and the so-called travel enduros are bestsellers. Both vehicle types suggest to their owners that they can go anywhere at any time. Either over asphalt, gravel or stick and stone – nothing can stop them.
For one hundred percent road use
A look at the data sheet, curb weight category, or the vehicle registration document often reveals that with this all-way characteristic, the wish often remains the father of the thought. So it is all the more pleased when Triumph turns away from this hypocritical “multi-purpose” with the new Tiger Sport and the Tiger donates not only the nickname “Sport”, but also lays the entire conception on one hundred percent road use. The Tiger with the 1050 triplet has been wearing roadworthy 17-inch tires for a long time and is thus clearly turning away from the “Enduros” with 19-inch front wheels. Rightly and to the delight of a large fan base, because the Tiger is a popular motorcycle.
And it was precisely this fan base and dealers who interviewed Triumph about what could be improved on the Tiger – and implemented this input on the updated model. Despite many changes in details, the tiger has remained a tiger at heart. That is a good thing and is partly due to the fact that her heart has remained intact in its foundations. The 1050 triple dominates the entire motorcycle in its own charming way.
Triumph Tiger Sport crisper than its predecessor
The large, heavy engine became livelier by means of a modified airbox and flow-optimized exhaust, and now pulls more horses than its predecessor, always and everywhere. At its core is the gearbox of the Speed Triple R, which significantly improves the shiftability of the gearbox, which is somewhat shorter in sixth gear. Thanks to a slightly shortened secondary gear ratio and an optimized mapping of the injection, the Tiger Sport is more lively from the corners and, according to Triumph, even drinks a little less.

The Tiger line has become more dynamic overall, and the single-sided swing arm is a beautiful eye-catcher.
The agility gained at the drive level is complemented by a more manageable chassis geometry. The new single-sided swing arm is longer than the old standard counterpart, which extends the wheelbase, but the Tiger Sport has not become any more unwieldy. Changes to the caster, the 1.3 kilogram lighter rear wheel and the tighter tuning of the chassis allow the Sport to bend more sharply than its very comfort-oriented predecessor.
When driving, the new one also lacks any hardness. Despite the newly calibrated chassis, the fork still dips deeply when braking, and quick changes of direction based on horsepower can only be achieved with considerable effort. Here you can feel the negative sides of the robust triple. The engine is simply big, has a long crankshaft and gear shafts one behind the other. This “classic” structure resists the mass centralization that is common today, which can be felt on all models with this engine. They always feel kind of “old”.
The tiger proves that it’s old but not bad. Here the three is celebrating, gear changes are now smoother and more precise than on the old model. This engine does not need traction control because it never surprises with its performance and lets you glide relaxed and fast.
Perfect for longer tours
So you shouldn’t have hectic racing ambitions on the Tiger despite the “Sport” in the name. You have to see the British woman much more as a strong and brisk kilometer eater. The comfortable chassis, the good wind protection and the long-distance ergonomics (okay, the tank, which is quite wide in the knee area, takes getting used to) provide the perfect systems for this. Two-stage adjustable heated grips, a now very well coordinated ABS and this awesome sounding motor do their part.
However, the Tiger could now be improved even further, because the heated grips are too thick, the clutch and brake levers are too far away even in the “narrowest” position and the gear indicator and anti-hopping clutch are missing. But: Nobody is perfect. And even as it is now, Tiger Sport will make its fans happy and win new ones.

PS judgment
The revision of the Tiger Sport has succeeded. The soft travel steamer has become a fast, comfortable street motorcycle à la Kawasaki Versys 1000 – only the Triumph looks a lot better. And it’s fun anyway, because the engine, which is powerful in all respects, is very well suited to the shorter gear ratio and the performance upgrade.
