Triumph 1050 SPRINT ST 2008

Triumph understood that its success lay in its originality. Its reputation depends above all on its engine. A 3 cylinder does it. From the Speed triple to the Rocket III, the sorting equips a good part of the range to the delight of many. An engine like that, it is at the same time the torque everywhere, the extension, a bewitching noise and a pleasant character..
The Sprint ST welcomes the new version of this boiler: 95 cm3 more for a cubic capacity now reaching 1050 cm3, a power rising to 125 nags and more torque available earlier. This moulbif really has a bright future ahead of him.
On the 2005 Sprint, Brittany engineers used the number 3 as long as they could. 3 cylinders in the propellant, 3 exhaust nozzles, 3 optics, 3 indicator dials … Hinckley cultivates its difference. Following the fashion for pots under the saddle, the manufacturer picked up the idea and arranged it in his own way. 3 flutes are sheltered under the saddle, in a style both close to and different from that of the MV-Agusta F4. The life of the machine is monitored by a set of 3 dials which constitute the instrumentation block, class and complete. As for the look … Nasty, futuristic, the ST frowns. Its 3 headlight optics are installed in a support with strange shapes. Stung from a ship from the TV series “Stargate”? Looks like anyway…

Gone are the soothing shapes tinged with English charm of the previous model. The pencil stroke initiated on the Daytona 600 guided the designer of the new Sprint – Angles, taut lines: the silhouette is sharpened. The styling of the Aprilia Futura was shocking at first. Customers shunned it but now the VFR and the Sprint are copying it.
This aesthetic overhaul is accompanied by changes to the chassis. Frame, single-sided and fork (painted black) are new. The latter is now fully adjustable, just like the rear monoshock (the old Sprint only offered the preload to be adjusted).
Available in blue or silver gray from February 2005, the 1050 Sprint ST intends to no longer be a rival for the 800 VFR but to steal its leading position. And why not ?

The Sprint has never lived up to its name so well. This new generation does not need to beg to shift the counter hands to the right with enthusiasm. Model of choice in the sport-GT category, the Triumph has decided to move towards more sport. Attitude that is verified from the first turns of the wheels, when we discover the driving position: although comfortable and supported by a well-made saddle, it reminds us that it is indeed on bracelets and not on a handlebars that “rest” the wrists. The downforce is sensitive but nothing exaggerated, especially compared to pure sports machines. The legs are a little more bent but it is still very light.
Now that we see more than 150, we are asking ourselves other questions. The protection is very adequate, the suspensions provide, but does this new mill have as much punch as its characteristics seem to suggest? We will quickly find out. All you have to do is turn the handle in this mid-range zone to benefit from good pickups, then let go of the tachometer. Not immediately ; we must first swallow this curve which is emerging at more than 200 per hour. We go for it and the Sprint regales us with its stability. Ah, it’s getting tighter … So much the better: the 1050 takes an angle and not just a little. You can change the trajectory without fighting and accompanying it with a rear brake lick. Once a genetic defect in Hinckley’s machines, it is now much more convincing. Principle of communicating vessels, front braking is a little less convincing; It was, however, one of the great qualities of the Triumphs. Be careful, these are not wooden discs pinched by sponges either … No, it just lacks a little power, and worse too, it would have been a little more incisive than it would have liked.

We get out of the virolo and the diet is down. We will be able to judge the revs. The horizon emerges and the Sprint rushes into it. The three legs run through the entire tachometer with great enthusiasm. Muscle, watts, the bike is not lacking. What is a shame is the more polished aspect of this mill. It grows, but in a more linear way than the old 955. Less expressive? It’s relative – Take it a bit into the laps, embrace the counters, and the Sprint hooks up to 260 km / h. And then, there is nothing there !?!
In road handling, the bike is dignified, easy and agile. We place it effortlessly and then it takes care of the road with rigor and efficiency. In dynamics, nothing to say, the ST is very strong. GT side, less hello. Except by digging into the accessories. With a set of suitcases (quite large), heated grips, a gel saddle and a GPS, you can turn the Sprint into a real roadster. But what is heartbreaking is the disappearance of the trunk under the saddle. Well, where did they put the tool kit? In a storage compartment hollowed out in the right side of the fairing. Possibility of transporting the Sprint: a passenger, tools, a pack of cigarettes … and that’s all !

Let us admit that she is a little lost in motor character; on the other hand, she has gained a sacred aesthetic personality. It relies more on its sporting skills while retaining this philosophy of compromise which makes it an “English VFR”. More virulent behavior would have interested us. But that, Triumph kept it for its new Speed Triple.

Although the Sprint ST 1050 was largely convinced of its qualities, that did not prevent Triumph from looking back on it. Some modifications strengthen its GT side. The fairing panels are revised to improve thermal insulation. A retouched saddle and a higher and lower handlebars raise the level of comfort a notch. The high screen, previously optional, as well as the cases are now part of the standard equipment.

Changes made since the 2007 model:

• Second generation multi-point sequential injection system for more efficient starting and fuel economy
• Complies with Euro 3 standard
• Higher handlebars for better riding ergonomics
• Higher screen and suitcases on the standard model
• Redesigned side panels for better thermal insulation of the rider
• Re-profiled rider seat
