When the characteristic fishtail mufflers fall silent, then it’s time for a story: for example, how Ulrich built a wonderful cafe racer. Even without a fishtail.

This Model E from 1921 is probably the oldest Velocette in Germany. And one of the most famous is the racing coolant from 1926.

For the first time 40 years ago, Velocette friends from half of Europe crashed into the Munsterland and took a vacation on the farm. At the same time, your host was still an ardent two-stroke fan.

The workplace on a modern tractor has more to do with Airbus or Boeing than with Lanz and Hanomag. It is therefore hardly surprising that the convinced and successful farmer Heinrich Wenning does not ignore the modern two-wheeler era and proudly pulls a brand new Triumph Tiger 800 out of the garage. With injection, ride-by-wire, on-board computer and all the bells and whistles. At the same time, even the most modern agriculture in Munsterland likes to take place on traditional, almost benevolent farms, so it is no wonder that Heinrich also has something old. A 1962 Velocette Venom Clubman, namely, and its idling – clocked crystal clear, reassuringly strong – comes a little closer to that of old agricultural machinery.

Sometimes Heinrich even drives a Harley, but only because the relevant US travel companies cannot offer anything British for vacations between the prairie and the Rocky Mountains. Nevertheless, the overall question that arises is how it all works, apart from hundreds of pigs and tens of hectares of land. “Only with passion,” says Heinrich and smiles. But he’s damn serious. First of all, nothing else goes well for him, and secondly, he has decades of experience with it – at least when it comes to motorcycles and agriculture. Even as a very young man, the now 63-year-old would always leave his beloved parental field to hug the world and brave the wind with a crackle. “I was a two-stroke fan through and through. It had to be light and strong. “

This year‘s Border Raid leads you to Wenning‘s farm “

But somehow Heinrich didn’t have the right friends. Four-stroke driver! Single driver! One even drove the somewhat strange product of the British brand, which disappeared in 1971 Velocette and was – if already, because already – a member of the Velocette Owner Club. Even then, the members of this honorable association deigned to organize an occasional border raid that would lead them beyond the borders of the kingdom. For 1976 they had Germany in mind, and Heinrich’s friend, who lives in Munster, seemed appropriate to plan this venture. The man was extremely pragmatic: if around 30 people come, you need space, if they all arrive with their grumbling single, this space should not be right next to the church and kindergarten. Heinrich immediately understood what these requirements meant. Satisfied, the friend wired to England: “This year’s Border Raid leads you to Wenning’s farm.”

Because there was still some time left before this country trip, the two friends drove to the Isle of Man again that year, Heinrich with the target-oriented Suzuki T 500, his friend with the persistent half-liter Velocette. The island in the Irish Sea experienced a Wenning in top form – Heinrich set his personal record lap on the Mountain Course – and a Velocette community full of anticipation: When the Velo pilot from Munster introduced the steadfast Suzi rider as his friend, the British responded polite, we’re going to the continent this year, maybe we could meet again, for example at the late summer meeting at Wenning’s farm. That could hardly be avoided, Heinrich replied: “I am Mr. Wenning.”

What a fabulous sound

It testifies to the British sense of tolerance that a few weeks later a good 25 of the Birmingham beauties actually parked on his lawn between the main house and the warehouse. “Even pre-war machines among them,” remembers Farmer Wenning, unable to understand where the time has gone. “40 years, oh man, how young we were there.” And still diplomatic, because the differences between four and two-stroke engines were largely reconciled at the premiere. Even more: The Fourstroke activists were so enthusiastic about their vacation home under oak trees and by the rushing stream that they gratefully accepted Heinrich’s offer to come back in one or two years. “Well,” smiles the host, “and since then they have been coming every two years.”

As a rule, at least, unless family events forced a somewhat longer break. “Or the foot-and-mouth disease raged on the island. I couldn’t use any English here. ”Last summer was free of family or veterinary restrictions, so beer table sets were scrubbed, charcoal obtained and the lawn mowed – as has always been the case for 40 years. And the bike was cleaned – as always for 32 years. At this point Heinrich contradicts the assumption that at that time he simply concluded that his new, reliable friends were on their motorcycle. “No, no, the seeds were sown long ago. I found the starting procedure so great with the Velo. And that fabulous sound when my buddy ran off on the Chaussee in the direction of Munster. ”Where he’s right …

Powerful single too expensive to produce

Velocettes almost always stood for brave sportsmanship, despite two 350 World Cup titles in 1949 and 1950 before the Second World War, almost more than afterwards. The extremely ambitious K series made its debut in 1925 with its vertical shaft 350, the racer developed from it won the Junior TT in 1926 under Alec Bennett and initiated an eternally long list of great sporting successes. But although the solid and powerful single also drove an all-rounder, it was not a top seller – too expensive to produce.

A simpler unit promised improvement, and so the M series was born in 1933, with ohv engines of initially 250, but soon also 350 and 500 cc. After the war, the vertical shaft motors phased out, and ohv singles, which were very well developed, served sporty customers just as well. The performance of the 350cc Viper and the 500cc Venom, both presented in the mid-50s, with 26 and 34 hp, reached far beyond the class average, dedicated dealers supplied a lot of accessories to get them ready for the hugely popular club races. In 1958, Velocette took up this trend itself and presented its own Clubman versions with 28 hp at 7,000 rpm and 37 at 6,200 rpm.

English, German and Dutch arrived

One of these came to Heinrich’s farm in 1984. Venom Clubman, with Amal-TT carburetor, higher compression, low handlebar halves and more closely geared transmission. Over the next two years, the slim half-shell and the one-and-a-half-seater gave the final whistle and a Deutz alternator provided the necessary security, because twelve months later we went back to the island. There it was not enough for a new record time, but at least for an autograph from Ernst “Klacks” Leverkus: 80 years of TT, this anniversary had not only attracted many Velocette riders, but also the legendary MOTORRAD tester. The Clubman still has the sticker on it, but it hasn’t gotten that far for a long time. “But I like to take the bike here for the little evening lap,” reports Heinrich, and that’s why he is quite sure that it will start reliably. After all, he has to lead the eventual exit, and that’s what he does.

English, German and Dutch have come to pay homage to their brand. It’s all very familiar, even the motorbikes are well known. All the greater the interest when Ulrich shows up with his ingenious Velo-Racer. Or device with a Model E3 from 1921. This two-stroke is probably the oldest bike in Germany, and its wonderful KSS, only five years younger, invites you to chat about the glory days. After the second beer at the latest, the conversation turns to the world record of 1961, which was never broken within its class, when a Venom tore off 3,900 kilometers on the Montlhery course in 24 hours. Results in an average of over 161 km / h – and of course answers the question about the best single-cylinder ever built. With this certainty, you then go to rest after the fifth or sixth beer. The real ones crawl into the tent, of course. Because some things should stay the way they always were.
