For quite a few years, many manufacturers have tried to oust Harley-Davidson in the field of custom and tourer. Timidly in France, with machines like the Kawasaki VN 1700 Classic, Tourer or Voyager, the Suzuki C 1800 R Intruder or the Yamaha 1900 Midnight Star. The Japanese are breaking their teeth there, but developing much more effort in the States, with an extraordinarily richer supply. Still, nothing seems to worry HD…. Except this little builder who comes to us, with a cruiser that has nothing in common with the usual competition. Victory and his Cross Country represent a real challenger for Milwaukee.
Japanese customs are good, but their hearts are Japanese. And for a die-hard enthusiast of customs, you need Rican blood in the pistons and in the chassis. Listen to a biker talk, it’s uplifting. And Victory is becoming very threatening: with the power of the Polaris group of which it is a part + a very complete range + a made in USA address, the manufacturer can be proud to give the Electra range an uproar with these Vision and Cross Series. The Country just competes with the Street Glide model. A copy ? No, the same concept but with modernism everywhere.
When you see this Cross Country, you are amazed at such a futuristic design mixed with a more than classic silhouette. A kind of neo-post-futuro-classic. It’s imposing, elegant, clean, intriguing. The lines are sometimes fluid and curved then sharp but always respecting the profile of the custom. Guaranteeing typical protection, the fork crown is inevitably compared to the “pig nose” of the Electra – except that it manages to impose its own identity here. On the Country, it is available with 3 sizes of bubbles.
The big crash bars on a custom, we know. The Country is no exception to the rule and has been welcoming copious metal tubes since 2013 to protect its finery. In terms of design and originality, we regret the stylized arches of previous vintages. Leg protection level, don’t expect anything…. or look at the side of the Vision Tour and its imposing fairing. The very designer suitcases can accommodate 40 liters of luggage each. And optional a chest worthy of a Star Trek.
On board, the welcome is divided between a superb and very complete dashboard, a long, low and wide saddle as well as a multitude of thumb controls to bring the multitude of on-board functions to life..
Taking on Harley on the pitch isn’t just about style, but above all about engine. Victory has what it takes in her stomach: a pot-bellied V-twin (how could it be otherwise….), Huge, clean on him and well-bred. The striking 106 logo enthroned between the cylinders indicates its cubic inch displacement, or 1731 cm3 for us Europeans. It is even bigger and fatter than the 103 ci installed in 2011 in the Touring range from Milwaukee. At Uncle Sam’s, that’s 97 horsepower you can count on – our standards unsolder about 8% of that horsepower, but there’s a hefty 15mkg left to move this 350kg beast. Since 1998 that Victory exists, engine manufacturers have had time to work on and refine this large twin. Available and efficient, the engine is efficient, available, but lacks relief. Facing the Twin Cam, it will benefit from its superior strength; character level, we will have more sensations with the Davidson.
One area where Crosses will outperform Harley’s Touring is in handling. The chassis with a molded aluminum frame and a singular inverted fork allows a more rigorous ride and far from what one can imagine of such a motorcycle of more than 400 kg with the driver. Braking uses three 300mm discs crimped by 4-piston calipers at the front and 2 at the rear. We can therefore ride in peace, ensure a good rhythm and cruising for a good time thanks to the 22 liters of the tank..
For bikers, this Cross Country won’t be easy because it lacks the magical crest and HD character to conquer the market. But more objectively, the road and mechanical qualities of this tourer seriously shake up the Harley Street Glide. Especially since its price is 4,000 euros lower.
Apart from the black, the 2013 colors are much more lively than usual. The tangy green, very remarkable, will not normally be imported into France..
