Superpole Buriram: Rea doubles the stake in Thailand

Jonathan Rea has just signed the second Superbike pole position 2015, on the Chang Thai circuit in Buriram (Thailand). The Kawa ‘Boy n ° 65 is ahead of two other British: Leon Haslam n ° 91 on Aprilia and Alex Lowes n ° 22 on Suzuki.

From the start of the final qualifying session – Superpole 2 or "SP2" for close friends – Jonathan Rea wore his official ZX-10R at the top of the timesheet. But once the qualifying tires had passed, Leon Haslam (Aprilia Red Devils) took the lead in his turn: the two leaders of the provisional team put it back !

While the Aprilia rider seemed to hold her first pole position since Phillip Island 2010 (!), "JR" led a final assault on soft rubber … Ten seconds from the checkered flag raising, Jonathan posted the best time of the week- end: 1 ‘33.382, beating Leon by just 11 thousandths of a second.

Slowed down on his last lap, Alex Lowes nevertheless reached the first 1st Superbike line of his career. Best time on Friday afternoon under the moist Thai heat, the Suzuki Voltcom rider will race tomorrow after his first international success.

Fourth time just half a second behind his new team-mate, Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) will be ahead on the 2nd row Jordi Torres on the second RSV4 RF and Chaz Davies on the first Panigale R (Ducati Aruba.it).

Third fastest time 3 minutes from the end, just before his little – and much younger – comrades draw their own soft rubber, Troy Bayliss finally sets the seventh fastest time. After having made sparks in SP2 (literally, with a damaged boot slider!), The Australian will do everything to shine in the race (s).

Drafted in SP1, Michael van den Mark (Honda Pata) turned a second slower than Jonathan Rea, but partially consoled himself by being ahead – by five hundredths of a second! – his teammate, our compatriot and 2014 world champion: Sylvain Guintoli.

Behind the world n ° 1, in 4th place, will settle the Argentinian Leandro Mercado – also passed by the SP1 – on his Ducati Barni n ° 36, the Spaniard David Salom and his Kawasaki Pedercini n ° 40 and the ‘Italian Matteo Baiocco and his Ducati Althea n ° 15.

Earlier in SP1, Sylvain Barrier had chased VDM. Ahead of the best time in the penultimate sector, our two-time champion STK1000 had almost lost the front in the last overhanging turn! Badly shaken by his BMW – this is neither the first nor the last time … – he finished third in the session…

The n ° 20 of the BMW Italia team will therefore lead tomorrow in 5th place. Nico Terol, unable to fight for access to SP1 – either finish in the Top 2 of Superpole 1 -, will place his Panigale R (Ducati Althea) behind the Frenchman’s S1000RR. Leon Camier and his F4 will complete this 5th row.

Sixth fastest in SP1, Randy de Puniet (Suzuki Voltcom) had to be content with 16th place on the grid, ahead of Roman Ramos (Kawasaki Go Eleven) and Nicolo Canepa (EBR Hero) not quite recovered from his caper during the Australian first round.

Our fourth representative Christophe Ponsson (Kawasaki Grillini) will take the lead in 7th row and will try to hook up the right wagon in the race in order to score new points in the world championship tomorrow. He will precede Santiago Barragan (Kawasaki Grillini).

The third test session (FP3) having taken place this morning after a heavy downpour, the pilots were unable to improve their lap times the day before and win – but also lose! – valuable places in the ranking. They were also only eight to have completed a fast lap, the weather forecast no longer predicting rain for the rest of the weekend..

Author of the 21st fastest time on Friday at the end of the first two free sessions, the "wild card" (invited to this event only) Nakcharoensri did not therefore benefit from a third chance to join Superpole 1 which, as a reminder, brings together the drivers classified from 11th to 20th place at the end of the first three free sessions.

The Thai rider will therefore place his Honda Fireblade on the 7th row of "his" national grid tomorrow (first start at 7am French time!). The 8th row will be made up of Gildenhuys (Kawasaki Pedercini), Pegram (EBR Hero) and Toth (BMW Toth). The other two wild cards Sikora and Chumlai will bring up the rear.
