Videos, statements and analysis of the WSBK at Magny-Cours
The twelfth round of the World SBK 2011 took place on Sunday in Magny-Cours (France). To complete our live reports, here are the statements of the SBK riders, our analyzes and the video summaries of the Superbike and Supersport races..
WSBK 2011 analysis: victory in two sevens !
Portimao will be the final of the Superbike World Championship, but the World Superbike and Supersport driver titles have been awarded here – cocorico! – at Magny-Cours … This year, the victory was clear and flawless, "in two sevens": the n ° 7 of Carlos Checa in SBK, and that of Chaz Davies in SSP.
Riding respectively a 1098 at the end of the race – although it will inquire an additional year while the 1199 Panigale will warm up in Superstock 1000 -, and an R6 returning from a sabbatical year, the Spaniard and the Welshman almost dominated without sharing their discipline…
Among the "1000" therefore – yes, 1000 cc for the 4-cylinder and 1200 cc for the Ducati twin-cylinder – Checa has been on the podium 20 times, including 14 times on the highest step and 6 times on the lowest … But never on the second step: this was reserved for the Italians Biaggi and Melandri !
By winning one or two more victories in two weeks in Portugal, the new world champion would definitely eclipse the old one: Max Biaggi who in 26 races last year had climbed the first step 14 times (20 times in all), but recorded "only" two fastest laps in the race and signed two poles, while Checa had broken 7 lap records and Crutchlow achieved 6 poles in 2010.
In addition to his success in the race, the 6 poles and 10 lap records (even 7 and 11 with Portimao where Bayliss had crushed the competition in 2008, in the 1098 too) allow Carlos to pose as the indisputable driver of the year 2011, and above all, to rise to the rank of "King" in the category.
The Catalan who will celebrate his 39 years on October 15, therefore enters the prestigious lineage of Troy Bayliss (the Troy of 2006 especially), Colin Edwards (of 2002, if yes) or Carl Fogarty (of 1994)! And next year, he will try to enter the also very closed circle of multiple WSBK champions…..
Now seventeen times champion – constructors – Ducati is undoubtedly the real boss of the World Superbike! The director of the SBK project in Bologna did not fail to congratulate Checa and his team Althea, who also won the Superstock 1000 with Giugliano. !
"It has been an incredible day. As far as I can remember, I don’t think Ducati has ever won four titles in a single day, which in itself is a record", indicates Ernesto Marinelli … And to think that a year ago, his big boss Gabriele Del Torchio announced – with more restraint – the withdrawal of his official team in WSBK (read) !
"We found with Genesio (the team manager Genesio Bevilacqua, NDLR) and Althea very important partners who, together with the impeccable work and talent of Carlos and the impressive work of Davide (Giugliano, 2011 STK 1000 champion, Editor’s note) this year offered us the opportunity to get the result of this day", recognizes the Ducati manager.
The grand chef of the Althea team, meanwhile, is "Special thanks to our sponsors Antonio and Alessandro Annoscia, owners of Unibat". Genesio Bevilacqua quite simply hopes that after such a good season spent together, they will do it again in 2012, with the same 1098 … Why not two this time: one driven by the WSBK champions and the other by the Superstock one? Mamma mia, what poster !
As for the 600 – and 675 cc for a few Triumphs – Chaz Davies has not had an equally successful year as Carlos Checa, but he also offers himself his first world title after five laborious years in the race. world in the Intercontinental Circus (in GP 125 in 202 then in GP 250 from 2003 to 2006), then three seasons in the United States (AMA Championships)…
Spotted during his three successful freelancing at the end of 2009, "Chazy" found himself a handlebar in World Supersport. But the Daytona, a little too capricious, did not allow him to fight for the win (four 3rd places all the same). Fourth in the championship, Davies has returned to the top this year, but on an "old" R6 this time !
This winter, the Welshman was indeed amused to see the stickers n ° 35 of the 2009 world champion (Cal Crutchlow) still stuck on the rims of the Yam ‘! But hardly out of their sleep, the old Yamaha immediately put down the Honda !
After a smashing start to the season from Luca Scassa, Chaz Davies quickly eclipsed his teammate to claim five wins in seven races. Without a technical glitch, the native of Presteigne would have even had to continue his good series at Imola and win the title there two events before the end of the championship. !
So Sunday, Chaz showed restraint: unable to keep up with the pace imposed by his competitors, the n ° 7 was content with a 6th place to crown the world crown: "I would like to thank Luca Scassa who was a great teammate. Today he protected me a good part of the race, even risking not to win", Chaz insisted on Sunday night. Fairplay, isn’t it?
"I worked fifteen years for this", also commented the 24-year-old pilot (!),"it’s an amazing day. I am the world champion, and I have to repeat it to myself to believe it. Giuliano Rovelli offered me a chance and I was able to reward him by making our dream come true. We won thanks to the work of the whole team who always gave their 110% ".
Delighted with this success in Supersport, the Parkingo team would have liked to climb into WSBK to recover the official R1s abandoned by Yamaha Europe – which entered them this season -! But it seems that the tuning forks firm is not ready to leave its machines to Giuliano Rovelli and his men.
So who will take over from Iwata in World Superbike, in order to compete with the semi-official Althea and Ten Kate teams as well – at Alstare, Francis Batta is still awaiting a decision from Suzuki … -? No one knows yet.
Melandri with Haslam at BMW in 2012 !
What is certain, however, is that Melandri will no longer run on his R1! The Hedgehog of Ravenna has already chosen to take a new path: that of BMW.
"Marco had a brilliant season, even in difficult times", remarked Bernhard Gobmeier, director of BMW Motorrad Motorsport, during the ‘officialization of the transfer,"he impressed us for his first season in the championship, and we are happy to welcome him to our team".
The path that the n ° 33 is about to take, however, promises to be steep: Leon Haslam, himself second in the championship on Suz ‘in 2010, is currently only in fifth place at the handlebars of the Munich woman – with 216 points and three 3rd places as best result – and must still be wary of Leon Camier, 6th on Aprilia (194 pts).
The S1000RR has still not won a race, unlike the R1 last version – the famous "Cross plane" – victorious many times with Spies of course, but also with Crutchlow, Laverty and Melandri Himself, unlike also the RSV4 which is from the same generation, or even the brand new Ninja which is walking harder and harder … The 2012 season may well be as good as the 2011, which will close definitively in two weeks in Portimao.
