World Superbike: Aprilia remains in the race in 2016
Since its release in 2009, the RSV4 has earned Aprilia four WSBK constructor titles. In 2016, however, Noale’s Superbike was not to line up … Until this last minute agreement with the IodaRacing team and two good riders !
The WSBK riders of the "quasi-official" Aprilia Red Devils team had concluded the race brilliantly: Jordi Torres had won his very first victory while in second, Leon Haslam had won his .
Despite this demonstration and the final third place in the WSBK constructors’ championship in 2015, despite its four constructor titles obtained in,, and, despite the two titles of Biaggi (and) and that of Guintoli (), Aprilia was not sure of ” be present – or represented – in 2016…
The confusion was such this winter that Jordi Torres, best "rookie" last season, and Leon Haslam, a safe bet in the World Superbike since 2010, preferred to secure their future by taking respectively the handlebars of an S1000RR within the Althea team ( WSBK) and the controls of a ZX-10R prepared by the GBmoto team (BSB).
Freshly titled on an RSV4 in Superstock 1000, Lorenzo Savadori preferred to wait … Well he took it! "I am really happy because it has been a difficult few months as the information has only just arrived. But I’m glad I waited and happy to continue my career with Aprilia !", says n ° 32.
"I’m also happy to work with IodaRacing who has a lot of experience and comes from MotoGP, and to have Alex de Angelis as a teammate for the same reasons. The goal will be to learn as much as possible", predicts Italy’s new great hope in World Superbike.
"This will be the first time I will ride a Superbike and I don’t know Pirelli slicks, these are big changes", explains Lorenzo who ignores – and we do not blame him – his participation in the unique, on the Kawasaki of his manager Lucio Pedercini.
Aware that the very late announcement of the IodaRacing team’s entry into World Superbike will not make it easier for him, the young Italian (23 years old on April 4) adds that "Phillip Island is not a course that I am familiar with. The last time I drove there was in 2010 on a 125 and everything will be completely different"… Come on" Sava ", it’s going to be fine !
The last registered will be the first in the race ?
"I regret not having been able to test during the winter, but that’s how it is and we will use the first races as a test to progress as quickly as possible", relativizes Alex de Angelis.
"Aprilia was a victorious motorcycle at the end of 2015 and we will soon see what the difference is with the other brands that have worked all winter.", says the pilot from San Marino who himself will have to put in a lot of effort to become competitive again…
Victim of a Motegi during the Japanese Grand Prix, Alex hopes he can attack the 2016 season properly. "My current physical condition is still unknown: since the crash, I have not driven and the test before Phillip Island will be important for this reason".
On the team’s official Facebook account, however, we learn that the n ° 15 made a Supermotard outing on January 31. It was undoubtedly during this taxiing that their pilot noticed that he still could not "not contract my biceps fully"and that he still lacked strength…
Uncertain about his physical condition at the start of the season, De Angelis, however, knows that he can rely 100% on his team: "I’m sure IodaRacing has a better chance of doing well in WorldSBK compared to MotoGP".
"I hope to get back to the top of the rankings, something I haven’t been able to do in a while and I miss", observes the winner of four Grand Prix: on Aprilia 250, and on Motobi Moto2 and on Moto2.
The new World Superbike rider also knows what will help him accelerate his return to the forefront: "I expect and hope that Aprilia will not be just a supplier, but rather an integral part of the team". Will the message be received at Noale? Certainly. But there is already …
