Declared Wet, the first round of the WSBK 2015 in France did not take place in the rain, but in the wet. In these difficult conditions, the 2015 champion Rea won ahead of his 2013 and 2014 counterparts: Sykes and Guintoli !
First Superbike race
Jonathan Rea leaves like a ball from his second place and doubles Leon Haslam, imitated by Chaz Davies. Next are Niccolo Canepa, Tom Sykes, Sylvain Guintoli, Leon Camier, Michael van den Mark, Ayrton Badovini and Luca Scassa. Good start, Randy De Puniet occupies 14th place, Ponsson is 20th.
Guintoli passed Sykes under Adelaide braking but the n ° 66 Kawa passed the n ° 1 Honda again under acceleration. Rea completed the first lap in front of his compatriots Davies, Haslam … and Sykes, passed in front of Canepa! Guintoli attacks Canepa in Golf and wins a place! Camier in turn overtakes the Ducati n ° 59 under Adelaide braking.
In front, Sykes continued to progress: "Major Tom" propelled himself into third position and lodged himself in Davies’ wheel for a good part of the second lap. The English Ninja passes his big rival in the championship on the descent to High School…
The 2013 champion pretends to pass the 2015 champion in the big curve after the short straight line but delays. Behind on the contrary, we are active … Haslam especially! The n ° 91 Aprilia tries to put the brakes on Davies but widens and takes with him the Ducati rider n ° 7.
Guintoli took the opportunity to get out of the hairpin in third position but the Honda rider n ° 1 could unfortunately not keep his place. Posted just behind our dear "Guinters", Camier made a very good start to the race with his MV Agusta. De Puniet retrograde to 16th place, Ponsson to 22nd.
Taking the lead on the 3rd lap, Tom Sykes distances his teammate by a small second at the end of the 4th lap. Johnny Rea is himself two seconds ahead of Chaz Davies. The hunting peloton follows a second behind, made up of Haslam, Guintoli, Camier and Van den Mark.
The reigning Supersport World Champion is particularly incisive, double Camier and threatens our World Number One. Sylvain does not give in and even attacks Haslam on the descent to Lycee, but does not convert his attempt until the beginning of the next round, the 6th.
Randy de Puniet decides to return to the pit to change tires. The Frenchman’s bet is daring because the track does not seem to dry out much despite the total absence of rain … On the track, Leon Haslam suddenly drops his pace and loses contact with the peloton, just like Niccolo Canepa.
Alone in the lead, Tom Sykes accelerates and turns more than half a second faster than Jonathan Rea Himself! The No.66 Kawasaki is more than three seconds ahead of No.65 as half the race approaches … Michael van den Mark climbs to third position … six seconds behind Johnny.
On his eighth visit to Adelaide, "Magic Mike" almost went highside and allowed Guintoli to climb on the podium, under the cheers of the French public! Sylvain drives home the point by posting the best lap time of the race in the following lap and secures a lead of more than two seconds!
A fierce battle between Davies and Van den Mark serves our champion … It also allows Matteo Baiocco to get closer to the fourth place occupied by the Honda n ° 60. Leon Camier and Chaz Davies, on the other hand, regularly lose ground.
The 12th lap is underway and Tom Sykes sees his lead reduced to two seconds … Jonathan Rea has just beaten Sylvain Guintoli’s lap record but the Frenchman turns at the same pace and is almost ten seconds ahead of his teammate !
In the next loop, the ruthless JR takes another second in Tom’s lead and keeps Sylvain at bay. Randy de Puniet definitively returns to the pits. Christophe Ponsson occupies 18th place and is one lap behind the leaders.
Jonathan Rea continues to get back on his teammate and attack with three laps from the end in the fast sequence of Nurburgring! The 2015 champion certainly doesn’t spare his teammate – Sykes fights Davies in the championship – and only aims for one thing: victory.
As Jonathan Rea soars to his 13th success this season, Sykes and Guintoli roll to the podium, and Van den Mark rolls up to a lonely fourth place, Chaz Davies continues to fight for as many points as possible..
The Ducati rider finally manages to beat his colleague Baiocco, but the n ° 7 finishes behind another Italian machine: the MV Agusta of Leon Camier which completes the Top 5! The French public is above all delighted with Guintoli’s new podium at Magny-Cours: 7 out of 7 !
