WSBK Germany (1): Major victory for Davies at the Lausitzring
Although completely dry, the German track was not tender with some WSBK riders this Saturday afternoon. Starting from pole, Chaz Davies nevertheless had a perfect first race, far ahead of Tom Sykes and Nicky Hayden. And Jonathan Rea then ?!
Start: Tom Sykes starts like a cannonball from his second place on the grid, but the best start is perhaps achieved by Jonathan Rea who crosses the first sequence third behind his teammate and … Chaz Davies, the poleman who tries from the first round of losing company to his little comrades !
The Ducati rider n ° 7 is effectively moving away from the Ninja n ° 66. One big second behind Tom at the end of the 1st lap, "Johnny" leads the peloton made up of Davide Giugliano, Lorenzo Savadori, Jordi Torres, Nicky Hayden, Michael van den Mark, Leon Camier, Xavi Fores, Markus Reiterberger, Sylvain Guintoli, etc.
The tone rises between two Italians in the second lap: Savadori is faster than Giugliano and hoists his Aprilia n ° 32 in front of the Ducati n ° 34 in one of the magnificent and fluid pif-pafs of the German circuit. Lorenzo now targets Jonathan who is just a second ahead of him.
Alone in the lead, Chaz Davies turns a second faster than Tom Sykes and erases the race lap record from the 2nd loop (owned by Haga since the last passage of the WSBK to the Lausitzring in 2007)! At the start of the 3rd round, the Welshman is therefore more than two seconds ahead of the Englishman Sykes and nearly three over the northern Irishman Rea..
Dropped by Savadori, Giugliano was put under pressure then passed by Hayden on the 4th lap. Torres ends up in the Roman’s wheel, followed by very – very! – near by the Dutch Van den Mark and Camier. Our "Frenchie" Guintoli is still in twelfth place, 10 seconds behind Davies.
Above the jackpot, Davies disappears from the sights of Sykes, Rea and Savadori who regroup, to the delight of the fans! Hayden distances himself from Torres still pursued by Van den Mark and Camier. Giugliano must now defend against local Reiterberger…
Thunderclap when the first third of the race is reached: Jonathan Rea falls when braking the 10th corner, a priori because of a false neutral! The championship leader gets back on his – damn – ZX-10R, goes off the track again and ends up returning to the pits, furious at his new gearbox problem…
Lorenzo Savadori fell a few moments later and had to let Tom Sykes go, alone in second position! A third retirement occurs in the wake: Markus Reiterberger raises his hand and departs from the track, victim of a mechanical problem on his S1000RR.
On the track, Davies’ Panigale turned perfectly and his driver was six seconds ahead of Sykes at the end of the 9th lap. Tom is two seconds ahead of Nicky Hayden: the trio of the Superpole is thus reconstituted! Torres was then several steps ahead of "VDM" and "Kamir".
The halfway mark is "quietly" crossed: Davide Giugliano lets go, the same goes for Sylvain Guintoli who is in tenth position in the wheel of Xavi Fores but four seconds behind his teammate Alex Lowes. West, De Angelis, Ramos, Brookes and Schmitter complete the Top 15.
In the 13th lap, Leon Camier impeccably passes Michael van den Mark: MV Agusta becomes the fifth manufacturer of the Top 5, one second behind the BMW n ° 81, three seconds behind the Honda n ° 69, five seconds behind the Kawasaki n ° 66 and 14 seconds (!) behind the Ducati n ° 7.
Guintoli wins a place in the next round! Our 2014 champion is 4.5 seconds behind Lowes who, with a shoulder injury, may be starting to feel tired ?! Our favorite No.50 just turned half a second faster than No.22 with five laps to go … Bookmakers can continue to sweat.
With four laps from the end of this first WSBK race, Chaz Davies’ lead exceeds 10 seconds. Tom Sykes is more than ever threatened by Nicky Hayden: the delay of the American falls under the second during the 18th lap … Ninja n ° 66 is he ready to counter-attack !
Two seconds behind the "Kentucky Legend", Jordi Torres must be wary of Leon Camier placed in his aspiration! If Sykes manages to maintain his slight lead over Hayden on the penultimate lap, Camier gets back into Torres’ wheel…
At the end of a masterful race, Chaz Davies won his 5th victory of the 2016 season, the 14th of his career in World Superbike. Ten seconds behind the n ° 7 Ducati tumbles the n ° 66 Kawasaki of Tom Sykes which takes advantage of the fall of Jonathan Rea to climb back to 26 points from the championship lead !
Nicky Hayden collects a magnificent third place that also coveted the unfortunate Lorenzo Savadori, while Jordi Torres finally manages to contain the excellent Leon Camier. Back to competition after five months of absence, Sylvain Guintoli finishes in a distant ninth place…
Will Sylvain be able to do better tomorrow in the second round? This race will be followed almost live on MNC, just after the Supersport race in which our two other compatriots Jules Cluzel (6th in qualifying) and Cedric Tangre (28th) will participate: stay tuned !
