The rain largely redistributed the cards for this second round of 2016 at Sepang. The big winner is Honda rider # 69, Nicky Hayden: American MotoGP champion wins his first WorldSBK race in Malaysia…
Second Superbike Sepang 2016 race
The impressive storm responsible for the postponement of the Supersport race has passed, but the rain continues to fall. The Superbike race is naturally declared "Wet", which means that it will not be interrupted: the pilots are free to go through the pits to change tires….
Departure : Tom Sykes got off to an excellent start but Alex Lowes was not far from poking his head in the race on first braking … Jonathan Rea came out second behind his teammate. Lowes widens in the 4th corner and loses several places. Rea came in very hard on the next big curve and made the outside to Sykes. Hayden follows # 1 !
Hayden took the lead at the entrance to the penultimate corner and completed the first lap ahead of Rea, Davies, Sykes, West, Lowes, Giugliano, De Angelis, Van de Mark and Reiterberger. Savadori is 11th on the second Aprilia, Camier is 14th on his MV Agusta, Torres is 15th on the second BMW Althea.
Rea lets Hayden go on the second lap and watches over his shoulder how his championship rivals are doing: Davies is half a second behind, Sykes a few lengths further. Tom is also put under pressure by West (replacing Sylvain Barrier on this event).
At the start of the 3rd lap, Davide Giugliano took advantage of a gap from Anthony West to take fourth place. Alex Lowes is a few lengths behind this trio which brilliantly animates this start of the race. The Yamaha rider is followed by the Honda of Van den Mark and the Aprilia of Savadori.
Hayden improves the lap record in the race in the 3rd lap: n ° 69 is a good second ahead of the "Number One" of the discipline and 2.5 seconds over n ° 7. Giugliano is a second behind his teammate, West is in the wheel of the Italian: Sykes is therefore in sixth place !
Like Sykes, Lowes is overwhelmed by his pursuers: VDM and De Angelis pass in front of the # 22 R1. Paradoxically, the soggy track – brand new and therefore offering excellent grip – is not the drivers’ "Cup of tea" British !
Nicky Hayden completed the 4th lap a second faster than Rea. The American therefore has a little more than two seconds ahead of the reigning world champion. Vice-champion Chaz Davies himself gives way to Jonathan Rea: at the end of the 5th lap, the Welshman is two seconds behind the Northern Irishman.
The lap times of the drivers gradually go down but Hayden remains the fastest on the track. The gaps are slowly increasing, except between the two official Ducatis: Giugliano is a little faster than Davies. The n ° 34 is found in the aspiration of the n ° 7 at the end of the 7th round…
Warned of Davide’s return, Chaz set the fastest time of the race in this 7th lap and climbed half a second behind Jonathan. Halfway through the race is reached and these three men are preparing to fight for the last two steps of the podium, the first being coveted by Hayden, comfortable leader..
Author of an impressive Superpole and wide winner of the first Malaysian race in 2016 disputed yesterday (Saturday), Tom Sykes is far in 8th place! Ninja n ° 66, which the majority of bookies gave as a second time winner in the dry, drinks the cup…
Three seconds behind Fireblade n ° 69, Ninja n ° 1 is joined by Reds n ° 7 and 34. Giugliano gets impatient, shifts several times, tries attacks but cannot pass Davies. This one succeeds, however, takes advantage of a slight difference in rea on the last braking of the 9th lap to climb on the second step.
Giugliano in turn overtakes Rea at the start of the 10th lap and plunges back into Davies‘ pots! Again under pressure, Chazie is lost when braking the final hairpin but manages to reach the right trajectory under the nose goatee from Italian.
In the infamous corner n ° 11 of the "Sepang International Circuit" (SIC …), Giugliano places himself inside his teammate and squeezes him a little on this delicate braking on the corner. Placed behind them, Rea does not just observe: he breaks the lap record in the race in the 12th loop.
Rid of his opponents, Giugliano attacks with more force and takes a full second from Hayden. There are only three laps to go and the two pilots are only separated by d2.5 seconds! Behind, Rea defeats Davies.
Nicky reacted on the next lap by maintaining his lead to 1.8 seconds in the 13th lap. The "Kentucky Kid" makes a small mistake in the following loop: the American lead falls to one second while the last lap is launched !
Like the Superstock 1000 champion, the 2006 MotoGP champion is chasing his first World Superbike victory … Nicky and Davide complete their race without a hitch and cross the finish line in that order, while Rea completes the second podium at Sepang.
