Leon Camier set to celebrate his 26th birthday by winning the Superpole at his home in England ! But on the soggy Silverstone track, Jakub Smrz’s No.96 Ducati was finally faster than the No.2 Suzuki….
The three best drivers of the Superpole this afternoon may have received their cup under a blazing sun, they had to compose on a soggy and ultra tricky track. For proof: Tom Sykes, Carlos Checa and Davide Giugliano were eliminated on "Ippon" – understand highside – during the second session of Superpole !
Already during the first session (SP1), our national Loris Baz had been thrown by his Ninja, preventing him from competing in SP2 where he could have shone in these delicate conditions … Let’s not overwhelm "Bazooka": he This is his first blunder of the season, or rather "his" season as a replacement for Joan Lascorz, since Donington Park.
We can even bet that the young rookie n ° 76 will be able to show himself sufficiently confident or even incisive tomorrow because he retains good chances of "medal" during the two Superbike races which should take place in conditions as hazardous as two weeks ago in Brno , where Baz was on his first podium !
Despite his fall, Loris’ place on the grid is far from catastrophic since he will start at the head of the third row! The Frenchman is ahead of serious customers: in order, Jonathan Rea (Honda WSBK), Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) and John Hopkins (Suzuki Fixi Crescent).
Another Frenchman dominates the fourth row: Maxime Berger posts his Ducati n ° 121 in front of the other official Aprilia – that of Eugene Laverty -, the "Italian" BMW of Michel Fabrizio and the private Aprilia of Chaz Davies. The RSV4s, in great shape at the beginning of the summer, mark time again, and the rain announced tomorrow should not benefit them…
In Superpole 2, as we have seen, three riders bit the dust: this is how the world Superbike champion Carlos Checa (Ducati Althea) has to be content with 7th place on the grid, and the Superpole champion 2012 Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) points one place behind !
Marco Melandri (BMW Motorsport) almost touched the asphalt too, but he stayed on his two-wheelers until the end. Undoubtedly cooled by the stalls of his rear Pirelli, the Italian only offers himself 6th place on the grid.
The n ° 2 of the provisional – n ° 33 on the track – will seek at all costs to enter the Top 5 tomorrow: Marco is only 21 points behind his compatriot Max! Tom and Carlos are respectively 59 and 67 points … The 2012 WSBK world champion will be Italian.
First Italian on the grid at Silverstone, Davide Giugliano (Ducati Althea, like Checa) could claim a place on the front row, but he also made a mistake. The fight for pole therefore took place between four men: Camier, Haslam, Smrz and Guintoli…
Two minutes from the end of SP2 – the pilots were all on their last lap! -, Leon Haslam (BMW Motorsport) was at the top of the standings with an already amazing time of 2 ‘21.613, an average lap of 150 km / h … in wet conditions !
His namesake Leon – Camier – then tumbled down at the controls of his GSX-R 1000 "made in Japan" but "tuned in England", blithely falling below the 2 ’21 mark! Suzuki Fixi Crescent team members getting ready to slash the champagne when a schmeurtz spoiled the party…
Indeed, Jakub Smrz (Ducati Liberty) managed to beat the time of the driver Suz ‘in the very last seconds. The gap is limited to 36 thousandths of a second, but it allows the Czech to take the third pole of his career, his second of the year with that of Miller.
His former teammate, our compatriot Sylvain Guintoli, completed the first row by setting the third best time on the handlebars of his new 1198 prepared quickly, very well done, by the Pata team! Still at ease in the rain, the Froggie will try to revive the championship after its Brno package (read).
Leon Camier’s performances will also be closely monitored: for a few events, the English champion (2009) has said that he has the pace of the best in the race but that his poor qualifications prevent him from being at the forefront. Will he be able to afford two great results for his 26th birthday? Answer tomorrow on Site: stay connected !
