Yamaha FJR 1300 AS and S 2007

The FJR has given a new tone to grand touring machines. With its elegant line, its comfort, its road but also sporting capabilities, the manufacturer has asserted itself as a beautiful and grand lady of the road. For its evolution, there is no question of doing things by halves, especially as it accompanies the festivities of the Fiftieth Anniversary of Yamaha.

Subtly redesigned, the line of the FJR is immediately recognizable. The changes are not obvious, except at the level of the fork crown, with an even more assertive look and mirrors mounted on new double branch supports. The priority is clearly announced: to improve comfort on board. It starts with a new screen adjustable to more height, fairing panels that can move apart 30 mm and 2 positions, a saddle and handlebars also adjustable, re-positioned footrest plates offering more relaxation for the riders. legs … and the list of modifications is worthy of a good BMW: side cases supplied as standard (attached to a new rear frame buckle), new brake calipers lined with standard ABS with CBS combined braking system (the rear brake pedal also actuates certain pistons at the front), a throttle equipped with a progressive system for more engine flexibility, and heated grips as standard for the AS version (we will come back to this in a few lines).
Some small improvementsYAMAHA FJR 1300 techniques will further increase the efficiency and reliability of the FJR: new curved radiator with double fan, extended swingarm (+ 35 mm), new transmission intermediate pinion lengthening the gear ratios, new exhaust system and lambda sensor for pass Euro 3 standards, redesigned on-board console with gear indication engaged, redesigned front and rear light units.
But the big innovation of the 2006 FJR is the version called AS, equipped with a semi-automatic transmission system. What am I hallucinating !?!

Yamaha calls this system YCC-S (Yamaha Chip Controlled Shift). A robotic transmission that is similar to the sequential gearboxes of sports cars. 2 possibilities to control the reports: traditionally with the foot selector or via 2 commands on the left comodo … except that the clutch lever has disappeared. It’s a combination of sensors and an electronic control unit that takes care of everything. Once the order has been received to change the gear, the assembly takes care of the engine management, the engagement of the dogs, the ignition, all with comfort and flexibility. this system weighs down the mechanical part by about 4 kg. Negligible on a machine of size and which proudly gambols with its 144 canassons. The driver retains all the management of his driving, because the YCC-S is not a completely but semi-automatic mode: it is you who give the impetus to change gears and the gearbox does the rest of the job ( disengage, internal fork and pinion movements, throttle management, engage).

Nice evolution for the FJR 1300, which has a nice technical panoply to satisfy the most fervent fans of fast tourism. It remains to be verified that the YCC-S is as flexible as Yamaha lets it guess … knowing that we are talking about the factory that created the R1 and R6, the V-MAX, the XT, the GTS, the EXUP, the Deltabox, and 50 years of innovations.
