Yamaha MT-125 ABS in the driving report

Class leader among the 125s?

The 125cc naked bike from Yamaha is now also available with an anti-lock braking system. Whether the surcharge for the Yamaha MT-125 ABS is worthwhile compared to the 300 euros cheaper basic version?

Holy tin but at! 4500 euros for a moped? Heidabimbam! Woisch guys, that’s 9,000 marks! ”It is well known that the premium 125s from the established manufacturers are not sold as special offers. There she does too Yamaha MT-125 ABS no exception. But from now on young people haggling for family financial aid will receive a powerful argument.

Class leader among the 125s?

MT-125 ABS, like its disguised sister, the YZF-R 125, is now also available with an anti-lock braking system. For a surcharge of 300 euros (R 125: 400 euros), Yamaha has given the eight-liter bikes an anti-lock device, making them, together with the KTM Duke and RC 125, the safest in their class. To put it in a nutshell: the ABS of the MT-125 does its job perfectly and reliably prevents the front and rear wheels from locking up with late, somewhat coarse control intervention. This not only helps beginners to take some of their fright off the brakes. OK then!

Motor can scold itself as the class leader

A rollover detection is not on board, but you have to reach into the iron to produce a stoppie for illustration purposes like top tester Schwers. It’s also nice that the pressure point of the brake (radial pliers at the front, 292 millimeter disc diameter) has only lost minimal brilliance despite the longer lines to the control unit. The bottom line is that the Yamaha MT-125 ABS offers a very good braking performance, which is certainly helpful as a spreading tool for (grand) parents’ wallets.

If that’s not enough, the strengths of the eight-liter MT (cf. MOTORRAD 15/2014) should be briefly reminded. The water-cooled four-valve injection engine has a full 15 hp and is therefore good for a real 120 km / h, i.e. safe speed on the motorway. Because the engine also hangs posh on the gas, pulls comparatively well and consumes very little fuel, it can scold itself as the best in its class. The clutch and transmission are no mysteries on the Yamaha MT-125 ABS.

The chassis of the Yamaha MT-125 ABS sporty

The chassis of the Yamaha MT-125 ABS is on the sporty side (hard springs, tight damping), but provides transparent, honest feedback on road and grip conditions. The frame geometry and the wide handlebars allow very nimble evasive maneuvers without sacrificing stability. The fun and confidence-inspiring driving behavior is supported by Michelin Pilot Street, who was happy as the first tire and offers good grip both wet and dry. The range of functions and readability of the digital cockpit (two trip meters, cooling water temperature, fuel gauge, shift light, etc.) are also pleasing.

On the target side, there is only a very acute knee angle, which does not quite fit the otherwise comfortable seating position, as well as the uncomfortable pillion seat. All in all, the Yamaha MT-125 ABS is a well-engineered small motorcycle, in which a lot of development work and fine-tuning have gone into which the purchase price has been put into perspective. This is all the more true as the processing quality is consistently high. Because the sporty 125cc are also sought after on the used market, the loss in value is halfway within limits. "For sure? Stable value? Awa? A gscheids Pfubbfdapperle? 4500 euros? Ha freile, Birschle!"

Brake measurement

Brakes.

This is impressive: 9.1 m / s² average deceleration measured by GPS results in a braking distance of 42.4 meters from 100 km / h. Very good for a 125cc. The system of the Yamaha MT-125 ABS does not interfere with too early intervention, but regulates somewhat roughly. The bottom line is a big plus in security.
