The Yamaha YZ 250 F 2019/2020 features a new design engine with electric starter, new cylinder head, new piston, optimized camshaft profile, new cylinder geometry, larger diameter clutch … offering more power at medium and high revs.
Its bilateral beam frame has been completely revised. The position of the engine has been changed to improve the rigidity of the machine, to ensure better grip in corners and higher traction. The trim and improved ergonomics provide a more compact design that allows the rider to become one with the machine. KYB suspension features optimized internal components for an optimal balance of comfort and performance.
In addition, this YZ 250 F is also equipped as standard with a communications control unit (CCU) allowing riders to connect wirelessly to their motorcycle and configure it according to their preferences. For this, they just need a smartphone and the Yamaha Power Tuner app..
Motor
In 2019, Yamaha revamped the YZ 250F’s signature rear-tilt single-cylinder design. The liquid-cooled, twin overhead camshaft four-valve injection engine features a downward intake located at the front with symmetrical intake and exhaust pipes. Fuel is supplied by a lighter 44mm throttle body, and passes through a new 12-nozzle Denso injector.
A high compression, flat head forged piston provides added durability and lightness. The piston, piston rings and DLC pin, along with the offset cylinder configuration, reduce pressure drop and contribute to faster response. The YZ 250 F’s lighter and straighter cylinder, intake pipes, cam profiles, high-strength connecting rod, and optimized crankshaft and balance design help deliver higher power at mid and high rpm, as well as pleasant power and exceptional reliability.
The transmission and clutch have been restructured for a more direct connection and better durability. The transmission ratios are the same as the previous model, but the gears are now made of an alloy which offers better impact resistance. Because of this increased strength, the teeth can be made thinner, which reduces weight and allows for a more compact design. The clutch system of the YZ 250 F has friction discs which are now 1.6 mm thick. The increase in thickness allowed our engineers to reduce the number of discs to eight.
The radiators and exhaust have also been modified to improve performance and weight distribution. The radiators have been widened and oriented directly towards the incoming air flow to improve cooling in the most difficult racing conditions. The innovative design of the wraparound exhaust improves mass concentration and power build-up. In addition, its geometry was redesigned in 2019. In this configuration, the rear of the exhaust has been brought forward and the silencer has been brought closer to the center of mass..
Power Tuner application as standard for 250 cc
The YZ 250 F 2019/2020 is the world’s first mass-produced cross-country bike equipped with an engine setting system from a smartphone. Thanks to the Power Tuner app, it becomes obvious to choose the exact power profile for optimal results on every track.
By connecting to the Communication Control Unit (CCU), pilots and technicians can instantly adjust the air / fuel mixture and ignition timing map to optimize engine performance, record information on each stroke and monitor a variety of data, such as coolant temperature, intake air temperature, air pressure, battery status, as well as data related to the maintenance, such as total uptime.
The Power Tuner application, launched for the first time with the YZ 450 F 2018, allows the engine mapping to be modified more finely than before. It also allows users to share settings within a team or group of friends (along with other information), thus providing a tool that facilitates communication..
Two-mode switchable motor mapping
Dual-mode engine mapping allows the rider to adjust engine performance with the push of a button, making it easy to tune the YZ 250 F to changing track conditions or weather.
New lightweight electric starter
Thanks to the compact starter motor and ultra-light lithium-ion battery of the YZ 250 F, starting has never been faster. Powered by an ultra-light, high-capacity lithium-ion battery, the system adds minimal weight.
Optimized frame and ergonomics
The compact chassis of the YZ 250 F was redesigned in 2019, making this Yamaha one of the most manoeuvrable machines in its class. This compact bilateral beam frame adopts a modified top frame and reshaped rear spars. Review, the zone located around the axis of the swinging arm as well as the engine mounts pursue this objective: a better centralization of the masses and a gain in rigidity in the vertical, horizontal and lateral axes, for a perfect balance between precision in the straight-line turns and stability.
In short, the frame improves grip and offers the best possible balance between stiffness for shock absorption and flexibility in turns..
Compact body and saddle design
The completely redesigned chassis of the YZ 250 F is dressed in a lighter and more compact plastic kit. The radiator covers incorporate a concave and narrower air intake, which not only improves the style, but also provides more comfortable support for the knees and facilitates the movements of the pilot. The seat height has been reduced by 8mm at the front and almost 20mm at the rear compared to the previous generation, giving the rider better handling on the bike.
Easily adjustable KYB coil spring suspension
The fully adjustable KYB coil spring fork has benefited from improved settings, larger pistons and newly designed fork / axle mounts to provide an exceptional balance of handling and shock absorption. The KYB shock absorber has been improved. It is now equipped with a lighter spring. The tank capacity has been increased by 30 cm³ to increase trigger control during long runs.
Lighter wheels
Careful computer-aided refinement of the cross-sectional profile of the EXCEL rim significantly reduces unsprung weight without sacrificing durability. Stiffer wheel spacers improve the feeling of contact with the ground when braking as well as the feeling of traction.
Highlights of the 2019 Yamaha YZ 250 F:
– Liquid-cooled 250cc four-stroke engine
– Power Tuner smartphone app
– 2-position switch for “on-the-fly” engine mapping
