After the changes made in 2016, the YZ 450 F approaches 2017 with a minimum of fine-tuned details. A redesigned deco and a rear brake disc made of the same steel as the front disc. Yamaha’s big cross remains confident; in the two years since the drastic redesign of the 2014 model – virtually every major function of the engine and chassis had been altered – the Yamaha YZ 450 F took on the role of the scarecrow in its class.
Thanks to its rear-tilted single-cylinder and its innovative 4-valve reverse-flow cylinder head, advancing an extremely efficient forward-facing intake, this bike has become particularly competitive. Its ability to win victories from its launch, combined with recognized Yamaha reliability and longevity, has won over many riders, whether they are at the start of local, national or international races..
In 2016, Yamaha engineers set out to refine and refine the YZ 450 F, while improving its performance, handling, agility and flexibility. Yamaha’s MX development team has never stopped innovating by making a number of engine and chassis changes to take the YZ 450 F to the next level, with 4 key goals:
– Achieve smoother and simpler engine operation for improved handling and smoothness, without compromising horsepower
– Allow more efficient bump absorption, as well as improved handling, traction and front wheel grip
– Provide increased stopping power and handling
– Promoting faster starts thanks to an electronic start control system
Sdeparture control system (LCS)
Even before the first turn everything can be played. In order to provide a definite advantage during this key moment, the 2016 YZ 450 F is equipped with a departure control system (LCS) for faster acceleration, but also more controllable from the gate down..
This performance-enhancing electronic system fine-tunes engine speed to optimize power delivery. It thus limits rear wheel slip and the motorcycle to pitch up when the rider demands a lot of power in first or second gear. Unlike other designs which simply delay ignition and reduce the speed of the spark, the new Yamaha LCS system is intended to be an intelligent system which dialogues with the electronic injection box and adjusts power according to track conditions..
Activated at idle with the push of a handlebar button, the LCS further enhances the performance of the YZ 450 F, leaving the rider to focus on clutch control and his own position..
Optimized camshafts and valve timing
The YZ 450 F engine features improved smoothness and elasticity through small but significant changes to the camshafts and valve opening times for greater combustion efficiency..
The 4-valve cylinder head uses modified intake and exhaust cam profiles that slightly reduce crossover angles, while the use of higher-lift exhaust cams and optimized exhaust valve springs facilitate the gas flow, for greater availability at low and mid-range.
Yamaha Power Tuner
Available as an option, the Yamaha Power Tuner allows riders to tune engine characteristics to suit track conditions. Very easy to use, it plugs directly into the motorcycle without having to use a laptop. The Yamaha Power Tuner has 2016 factory-type settings, in line with the latest engine developments.
Clutch and transmission improvements
For a smoother gear change and greater clutch precision, the 2016-2017 model benefits from a revised transmission: clutch nut and redesigned selector finger with a 20% stiffer spring are new. These modifications ensure quicker and more efficient gear changes, even when the transmission is called upon in stressful situations, such as departures..
Large diameter front brake (270 mm)
A brake that is both progressive and powerful is essential for good control of a motorcycle. For this reason, the Yamaha YZ 450 F has a large diameter front disc (270 mm) resulting not only in increased braking force, but also a unique feel, signs of greater efficiency. The double piston caliper benefits from a type of pads with increased performance.
Modified suspension and fork offset settings
In order to optimize the front suspension, the mobility and the grip of the steering wheel, amplitude adjustments have been made.
The AOS (Air / Oil Separate) front fork uses modified compression and rebound settings to improve handling on sections with bumps. These modifications are complemented by the use of triple trees that allow a 25mm fork offset, up to 3mm more than on previous models, resulting in a high balance between handling, agility and stability..
The rear suspension receives low and high speed compression damping adjustments to match the front suspension and provide better shock absorption performance. A rear spring (56 Nm against 58 Nm on the previous model) was also chosen.
Modified chassis design
The 2016-2017 chassis benefits from judicious modifications intended to increase the handling as well as the general ease of the bike..
For greater lateral rigidity, the swingarm axis widens by 12mm, with the rear section of the aluminum frame being modified to accommodate this reinforced design. Redesigned, the steel engine mounts help to stiffen the 2016 chassis. In order to lower the rider’s center of gravity and offer him greater freedom of movement, the footrests are positioned 5 mm lower.
