Is silent about the price Yamaha at the presentation of the new YZF-R7 – called R7 for short. But there is still some time, as Yamaha expects to be able to offer the new athlete in Germany from October. Until then, however, we can enjoy the otherwise abundant information about the small mid-range speedster from Yamaha.
Engine known
No surprise is the technical basis of the MT-07 and their crossplane twin with 689 cubic meters. Its easy-revving way of sending its 73.4 PS at 8,750 tours and 67 Nm at 6,500 rpm into the six-speed gearbox that can now be upshifted with the optional Quickshifter has ensured lasting driving pleasure since 2014 – whoops, wrong company, but that’s true. Interesting in the context of Supersport and the supposed boss of the middle class – the Aprilia RS 660: Yamaha’s complete waiver of any increase in performance MT-07 naked bike or to the tourist Tracer 7. There is one small difference anyway: The R7 couples with the A&S-clutch, i.e. a servo-assisted anti-hopping clutch that requires around a third less manual force on the non-adjustable clutch lever. The R7 will also be available in an A2 performance variant.
Fork new
Before the well-known twin, however, almost everything is new on the R7. Starting with an adjustable USD fork from Kayaba with 130 millimeters of spring travel, to radially hinged four-piston brakes on 298-millimeter brake discs to a new digital cockpit. The fork legs with a diameter of 41 millimeters are inserted in new fork bridges, cast at the top and forged at the bottom. Real handlebar stumps wait between the two for the steering impulses. The new brake pressurizes a radial brake pump with an external expansion tank. The new front end only changes the geometry slightly compared to the MT-07: the R7’s steering head angle of 66.3 degrees is a good degree less than that of the naked bike, which results in a slightly shorter wheelbase of 1,395 millimeters (MT-07 : 1,400 mm).

Adjustable shock absorber
Yamaha has made little changes to the design of the rear suspension on the new R7. The swing arm is unchanged, as is the flat, almost lying, indirectly hinged strut. In this case, the adjustable rebound stage damping has been added to the adjustable spring preload. Nothing changes in the rear brake package.
Fresh cockpit, fresh tires
A new supersport cockpit sits deep in the new fairing of the R7. LC display with gear and gear indicator, gear indicator and, if used, a QSS indicator when using the optional Quickshifter system. Technically probably the most modern part of the R7, as Yamaha has not equipped the little racer with any other driving aids or driving modes except with the obligatory ABS. The 10-spoke alloy wheels are known from the MT-07, in the case of the R7, instead of with tourist Michelin goods, it is covered with the hyper sport tire S22 from Bridgestone. The dimensions of the tires remain the same with 120/70 ZR17 at the front and 180/55 ZR 17 at the rear.
Supersport look
The most striking thing at the end: The fairing of the new Yamaha R7. Strongly based on the blessed R6 and die brilliant R1 dominates the front with the luminous triumvirate of LED slots on the cheeks and the individual projection spotlight in the middle. The LED lights are designed as position lights, the lens as the main headlight for high and low beam. Also borrowed from the R6, the narrow and slightly raised rear of the R7 appears that raises the seat height from 805 millimeters (MT-07) to 835 millimeters. A matching new tank in a very sporty design with a capacity of 13 liters and deep hollows for the knees.
Colors, prices and availability of the R7
Yamaha would like to be able to offer the new R7 in showrooms from October 2021. Those interested can then choose between Icon Blue and Yamaha Black. Both versions come with a crystal graphite finish on the engine, frame and swing arm, while the rims are kept in the basic color of the fairing. Yamaha has not yet announced any prices. However, we expect a base price of less than 10,000 euros.
Conclusion
Yamaha brings the legendary name R7 back to the streets and racetracks, remains technical, but far behind the claims of the real R7. The R7 is basically a fully faired MT-07 and doesn’t even want to compete against the new Aprilia RS 660. Maybe a good thing, since Yamaha can call such a damn attractive price for a sleek motorcycle.
