Like its sister FZ8, the Fazer 800 quietly ended its career last year. And said goodbye by selling the 2015 stock in the 2016 shelves. A distant descendant of the famous FZS 600 Fazer, its last adjustments were made in 2013, with the adjustment of the suspensions – an area where it clearly fished. Certainly, given its road vocation, it was easier to forgive its soft suspensions. The criticism was more virulent on his brother FZ8. But when you have heritage from FZ1 and R1, you have to be more than respectable.
We said the Fazer 8 got adjustable suspensions. The fork is now adjustable for rebound and compression on the right leg, spring preload on the left leg. The shock absorber gains a firmer spring (83.4 N / m against 78.4 previously), new settings and a thumbwheel allowing the rebound adjustment. Other small changes are to be identified: transparent indicators, and a new exhaust much more elegant than the previous blunderbuss.
What to change the breath of the 4 cylinders? No, especially a more delicate visual appreciation. The Fazer 8’s engine is an off-bored version of the FZ1’s large 4-cylinder, originally installed in the 2004 R1. The piston stroke is the same but the bore is reduced from 77 to 68mm. This gives us a boiler of 779 cm3. 106 horsepower is delivered but above all, Yam worked on the torque. A large volume air box (7.8 liters), double butterfly injection, engine dimensions not too super-square, and to compensate for the loss of the EXUP, the intake ducts are not the same following the cylinders. The tubes leading to chambers 1 and 4 are 125mm long and 150mm for cylinders 2 and 3. This also improves torque. With 8.4 mkg, the Fazer 8 is a tad better equipped than the Z 800, and much more than the FZ6 Fazer S2 which it replaced.
The Fazer 8 will have something to do with it. And the chassis will be able to follow without problem. Almost identical to that of the Fazer 1000 and therefore designed for a much higher power, the diamond aluminum frame, the inverted fork and the swinging arm worthy of a hypersport will know how to withstand the ardor of the mechanics and the pilot. 2 310 mm discs pinched by 4-piston calipers slow everything down. ABS is optional.
Moreover, we will not choose a Fazer 8 for the castagne (although….). Its purpose is versatility, with a touch of sportiness. The nice-sized fork crown is also there to confirm it. Apart from the muffler and the side tank covers, it is above all this appendage that will allow you to distinguish the Fazer 800 from the 1000. A tapered look, more R1, makes it both less intimidating but more piercing, more malicious. The sides are complemented by offset sides, like those introduced on the latest generation of R6.
Slightly different seatback, slight drop in fuel tank capacity, same speedometer, same engine, same chassis…. We take gloves but not too many risks in the design of this new machine.
With this Fazer 8 with the more potent engine, the road roadster FZ of medium displacement has what to answer to the Kawasaki Z 800. More powerful and equipped with a bigger trunk than an FZ6 Fazer S2, less heavy than the FZ1, this 800 just lacks a little daring but no qualities.
