Yamaha has often brought us in the history of two-wheelers machines capable of marking new horizons. The 500 XT, the V-Max, the 1000 GTS, the 350 RDLC, the 125 DTMX, the T-max … And it’s not over. The manufacturer with 3 tuning forks intends to thrill the market with its Niken, a three-wheeled machine surprising in more than one way.. Halfway between a Can-am Spyder and an MT-09, this hybrid opens a breach that will ignite the public as much as the detractors..
Machines with two wheels at the front and which take an angle, we have seen them for a few years. Piaggio MP3s (especially), Peugeot Metropolis, Yam Tricity – all scooters that have conquered a new market. But as mentioned above, these are scooters. No motorbike had ventured onto this terrain. The 900 Niken will be the investigator. Powered by the fiery 847cc 3-cylinder of the MT-09, 900 Tracer and XSR 900, it especially appeals to its stunning front axles..
The main lines were presented at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2015 with the MTW-9 concept. It’s crazy: the front of the Niken is made up of a double fork system called Leaning Multi-Wheel. Each arm consists of an inverted fork with closely spaced tubes to hold a 15-inch wheel and a 4-piston brake caliper. This multi-axle front would reduce the effects of varying driving conditions and provide a greater feeling of cornering stability. Enough to conquer all those attracted by the exhilarating driving of a motorcycle but little reassured by the natural unstable side of the motorcycle. A bike with its two wheels on the same axis, it does not stand up on its own and it breaks your mouth when you lose the front – with one more wheel in front, it is not really a motorcycle anymore but it does. a whole different way.
The large fork head and particularly muscular shoulders give it a threatening aspect. Michael Bay has never been this far with his team of Transformers. This cocktail shaking the engine of the MT-09 and an incredible chassis allow you to imagine new sensations and driving experiences. With 115 horsepower and the character of the CP3 engine, good or even big rhythm will be present at the call. If the thruster is taken from the MT roadster, the swingarm and tubular trellis frame are new.
Headlights, mirrors, indicators, license plate holder – the Niken is ready to go into imminent production. The on-board instrumentation comes from the MT-10, with an adaptation of the information displayed. The controls tell us a cruise control and different driving modes. Perhaps this intrinsic feeling of width will make you fear a delicate engagement … It’s misleading: the Niken is not wider than the BM R 1200 R. And barely 8 cm more than the MT-09.
