To offer a machine with character, to indulge yourself with a bike drawing its inspiration from the values and style of the Yamaha of yesteryear, to combine the technology of today with the flavor of the creations of the past. This is how we could describe the “Faster Sons” philosophy.. So tempted that we can explain with our words a Japanese idea, often imbued with references, sensations and concepts difficult to grasp for a European. But we get better with this first creation – the XSR 700 -, the daughter of an embrace between Yamaha and Shinya Kimura, famous Japanese trainer. This time, Yam completely rushes into the neo-retro roadster niche. Its XSR takes a symbolic name, and comes to play in the clan of BMW Nine-T and Ducati Scrambler.
But where does this machine come from? The tuning forks firm presents it as a tribute to the XS 650, a famous model covering the dawn of the 70s. A bit like the SR 400 that we put back in the catalog? Not at all. The SR has been the same bike for ages. While the XSR is a base of MT-07 with a strong taste of old school preparation. So we would be in the presence of the descendant of the XS 650? Let’s open a parenthesis on this illustrious machine of the 70s before continuing.
This happened in 1969. At that time, Yamaha only had 2-stroke in its range, the largest displacement of which peaked at 350 cm3. The arrival of the XS 650 is a revolution in the range: it is the first big displacement for the manufacturer, and the engine is a 4-stroke. Elegant, fine (for its cubage), the beautiful will not see the French roads until 1971.
More than 40 years later, how is the torch going with the XSR 700 ?
Interesting to see to what extent the evolution in engine capacity has upset the benchmarks. The XS 650 was Yamaha’s biggest cube; today, the MT-07 is an entry-level motorcycle despite its 45 cm3 more. A machine which trusts the top sales in France and which deserves it. Playful, with a lively and super pleasant engine, agile like a ballerina, everyone is enjoying themselves on their handlebars. The XSR 700 being equipped with the same chassis and the same engine, we will find the same services and as much pleasure to drive this bike. The driving position promises to be more relaxed with the handlebars curved further back.
So this is the look that will make us lean to one side or the other. The XSR asserts its “Faster Sons” identity with its stylish tank, a retro headlight embedded in a half-shell, a double-textured leather saddle, perforated plates covering the injection system and electronics.
The round headlight at the back is nice, old school style; but all plastic is average. A metal part would work much better. The aluminum radiator protection slams the retina; more discretion would it not be more appropriate ?
Let’s stop bitching for a moment, and appreciate the possibility of riding a neo-retro machine at a great price. Admittedly, the XSR 700 flies over the price of the MT-07 by around 1000 euros, but remains much lower than that of a BMW Nine-T. And then, we appreciate the little goodies, such as the XSR700 inlay on the back of the saddle, the XSR logo affixed to the tank, the stitching on the saddle, the minimalist dashboard, etc … and a very small bonus. chauvinist, this bike will be assembled at the MBK factory in St-Quentin.
Like the Bolt, the XSR will readily lend itself to the game of customization – the XV 950 Racer sets the example. The rear of the bolted frame has also been planned in this direction. And the owner will thus be able to consolidate the spirit of the XS 650. Because for the moment, apart from a little engine architecture (twin parallel 4-stroke), the silhouette of the saddle and the bending of the handlebars, the resemblance between the two motorcycles are more of the imagination than anything else. If we accentuate the temporal bridge with spoked rims, two exhaust running on the sides, chrome mudguards, and a pair of tires … Oh no, the Pirelli Phantoms already have the sculptures in another era..

**** Recall campaign *****
On July 31, 2018, Yamaha launched a recall campaign for its MT07s as well as its Tracer 700 ’and neo-retro‘ XSR700 ’road variants..
The screws securing the transmission chain case to the swingarm could become loose and fall out due to vibrations while driving the vehicle. In addition, there was a possibility that once the setscrews fell off, the chain case would break when hitting the drive chain. In extreme cases, the broken part of the chain case could fall on the road and obstruct traffic. To remedy this, Yamaha has initiated a recall campaign consisting of replacing the spacers and the chain case mounting screws..
For the French market, a total of 8,871 machines have been recalled.
