Zero SR / F in the driving report
Burners, dress warmly!
In the USA at Zero, motorcycles are produced that are not only impressive, but also work perfectly. The brand new SR / F takes a giant step forward.
For once, I want to write this story in the first person. You may forgive me, but what I do with ZEro in Santa Cruz was able to experience and experience, has me – yes, electrified. “You are the first person outside of Zero who is allowed to drive our SR / F!”, Brian Wismann, product developer at Zero, tells me. A great honor for MOTORRAD. Before that, Brian shared with chief technician Abe Askenazi how sophisticated and technologically advanced this motorcycle is. Because for the first time the Bosch driving dynamics control would be used in an electric motorcycle, an additional twelve-volt electrical system has now been integrated, as in automotive technology, and all possible programming can be carried out and also read out where you are using an also integrated app how inclined or how fast was driven. Cypher III is the name of the network in which all functions are integrated. That puts you right at the front.

Burners, dress warmly!
Processing at a very high level
I’m still blown away by the design of the Zero SR / F. While previous electric motorcycles looked more technically oriented even from Zero, the new one inspires with an extraordinarily harmonious design. The battery, which is now hidden in an artfully ribbed aluminum shell, has been perfectly integrated into the tubular space frame, the golden anodized motor with its cooling fins acts coaxially in the swing arm mounting. The body appears dynamically crouched, the rear extremely sexy and the bench well padded. Everything looks very valuable, to world-class standards, so to speak. “This is the motorcycle we have wanted to build for 13 years.” Abe Askenazi is visibly touched. Me too.

Instead of a tank for hydrocarbons, there is a compartment for water or other substances. The premium version hides another charger here. Behind it the type 2 socket.
You can feel that. Something great is happening on the motorcycle scene today. That was the case with the first Ducati 916, for example. Or when I was allowed to ride the first KTM Super Duke 1290. Or the first Suzuki Hayabusa 20 years ago. Epoch-making motorcycles that influenced an entire generation. I also trust the Zero SR / F to do that. And now, before I’ve even driven a meter. No hose or cable disturbs the aesthetics of the machine. The workmanship seems flawless, sometimes lovingly. The motor is perfectly integrated, the battery as well, a pretty dashboard informs, an LED headlight lights up, the rear with the integrated aluminum handles for the pillion passenger. respect.
“We work completely with air cooling. That saves us a lot of components and weight. And thanks to the motor working in the swing arm, we don’t even need length compensation for the timing belt. ”Abe, who has worked at Buell for 15 years, is delighted with how easily an electric motorcycle can be built. “We have no engine oil, no cooling water, a total of only ten bearings in the entire motorcycle. All with fat filling. There are of course no gears and clutches either. The newly developed motor now turns over 7,000 rpm and delivers a whopping 190 Nm from a standing start. “Okay, that’s 50 more than a Super Duke and should be enough to catapult the 226 kilograms Zero SR / F forwards.
Zero SR / F will go away all bumps
We drive off, noiselessly and absolutely controllable, the Zero SR / F starts moving. Everything looks much more mature than before. Handlebars, footrests and seat fit perfectly. SR / F means Streetfighter, so the slightly wider handlebars and the assembled seating position fit perfectly. Immediately it is noticeable: Everything is going smoothly. The silky smooth engine with its perfect “gas” response, the very appealing spring elements from Showa, the now befitting tires from Pirelli, the well-padded and shaped seat. Professionals were at work here.

The dashboard is clearly drawn and changes color depending on the mode. Dominant: the battery charge level. Motor and battery temperature are also monitored.
The tour guide is also a professional. Trevor lets it run, looks for and finds a really tricky mountain road with mighty bumps and hardly any traffic, you can tell that the man knows his way around. He pulls hard on the cable, the Zero SR / F march like Schmitt’s cats, iron out all the meanness and lace up precisely through the curves. Full power is released in sport mode, so things really get going. I predict: she will have few opponents there.
Top speed is 200 km / h, which makes sense to save the battery. It is more comfortable in eco mode, with a lot of braking torque to recharge.
150 kilometers range
The question of all questions: How far is it going? “She drives a good 150 kilometers or more. But more important is how quickly you can recharge it. ”In the premium version with 6 kW charger and additional device, the battery is full again in an hour. It takes four hours to plug it in at home. The type 2 plug connection is practical. This means that the Zero can be refueled anywhere in Europe.
Do I have something to criticize? The Zero people look at me questioningly. I can’t think of anything. "No, honestly, your machine is pretty awesome!"
