#AragonWorldSBK: statements from the 2nd round
Chaz Davies (Ducati n ° 7), 1st:
“The whole weekend was tough from start to finish. So it was very important to end it with a win, especially after yesterday’s disappointment. We were confident our bike would be fast in Aragon, but this was not easy at all today. Our main rivals seem relatively comfortable, so we know there is still work to be done in many areas. Today we suffered a bit from the grip from the start. plus the wind was really strong. It kept pushing on the corners and on the last lap I got caught in a gust on the 5th corner. I missed a downshift, widened a bit , but we managed to finish in front. We are competitive but it is still not enough. We have to keep working to improve. Tomorrow’s test will be very important for us, but for now we will celebrate this victory"
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki n ° 1), 2nd:
“I got to the front of the race quite early but couldn’t escape due to the strong wind in the straight line, which kept the drivers together. When Chaz passed he put a bit more pace and I increased my tempo to go with him. He made a few mistakes, but none that allowed me to pass him cleanly and stay in front. On the last lap, I just fought for the win. I tried in several places but it didn’t work. We can’t complain too much because on one part of the circuit we were really strong. Kudos to Chaz: come back after a big crash yesterday and win today is really impressive. I’m really happy with my ride today. I’m scoring 45 points this weekend, when I wasn’t feeling my best. The bike was still running really well, so I’m looking forward to joining Assen now. ".
Marco Melandri (Ducati n ° 33), 3rd:
“Our bike was more competitive today than in the first heat, and we were in contention for the win pretty much until the end. I tried to get away with about eight laps from the end, but I unfortunately almost fell a couple of times. After that it would have been difficult to overtake Rea and Davies: I couldn’t ask for more in the end. Each race teaches me something new and I familiarize myself with the battles against face. But we didn’t have the grip to fight in front. Anyway, we are happy with our performance. We fight regularly for the podiums and we are not far from winning. We just need to ‘improve the settings to be a little more constant throughout the race. Tomorrow’s tests will be very important in this sense ".
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki n ° 66), 4th:
"I thought I would feel better today, but I’m even worse physically than yesterday because I didn’t eat anything. We got closer to the lead, but I’m not comfortable on the bike with all that wind. It seems we are sensitive to the nose gear anyway, but the wind has been really terrible today! And for some reason I can’t hold a load constant on the front: this will be studied in testing tomorrow. I just couldn’t keep up the pace of the leaders here. We finish third and fourth on a tough weekend, and it has been a while since I last not been sick on a racing weekend I did not work at full capacity and on the bike you can feel that even the brain is not even working at its normal speed This weekend was surreal and weird. I gave everything I had, but I was clearly not running full ".
Michael van den Mark (Yamaha n ° 60), 5th:
"I’m really happy. We got off to a good start in the second run behind Alex. Johnny Rea passed me, then Marco Melandri passed me in the straight. I was a little slower than the guys in front of me but I could hang on to them so I was happy with that. We clearly took a step forward. It’s really good. Towards the end I struggled with the front tire: we were on the option softer and I think the wind today didn’t help anything. I’m happy to finish fifth, it was good to fight in the front group. I want to thank the team for their hard work. Everything the world is working really hard and you can see the potential is developing well. We are making progress and I am happy "
Xavi Fores (Ducati n ° 12), 6th:
"It was a funny weekend. We knew from the start that we were competitive, but the accident was unpredictable. It sometimes happens in races. It was a shame to start far behind today because I lost time passing riders. Once I found the right pace, I was able to recover. I was also getting closer to Sykes and Van der Mark, I ran out of laps. I have to thank the team that made a excellent work: they deserve this result "
Jordi Torres (BMW n ° 81), 7th:
“To be honest this race leaves us with a bit of a bitter taste. The goal was to start well, but unfortunately I came close to an accident on the first corner when another rider hit me, which Lost me many places. Once confidence was restored, I did all I could to catch up with those in front of me. I recovered pretty well, but if I hadn’t had to attack so hard at the start we should have done better than seventh today. Tomorrow we will make the most of the test to see how we can improve for the next races … "
Leandro Mercado (Aprilia n ° 36), 8th:
"I’m very happy with my race today. Overall I would say it was a good weekend. It’s a very positive start to the season. I want to thank the team for the good work they have done. they accomplished. During the race, I tried to stay with the leading group and actually managed to follow Sykes until the eighth lap. I didn’t want to let him go, but during the second half of the race. the race the grip started to drop sharply. We have to improve on this, work harder to solve this problem. I am convinced that everything can be solved because we did not participate in a lot of tests. now our objective will be to improve our second part of the race. I am still happy with our result today because I stayed longer with the top drivers, we have to continue like this "
Eugene Laverty (Aprilia n ° 50), 9th:
“It was a tough weekend and I did what I could today to come home with decent points. At the start I got into 2nd position and was ready for a good fight, but the other guys circled me. The wind was also really bad, it affected us all. It pulled me out of my way several times. The conditions were very difficult to ride. At the moment, the bike is not don’t allow us to fight, we’re missing something. We need to get good lap times as soon as possible, but I’m having a hard time braking the word and spinning it. There is an underlying problem, but with the test day should allow us to deepen this and, I hope, to adjust the bike properly ".
Leon Camier (MV Agusta n ° 2), 10th:
“I rode the best I could and felt we had made good progress again on the chassis. But I was at the limit, I couldn’t do more. We also had a small problem at a couple of places on the track, but this is the consequence of not having the full weekend to tune the bike. Overall we did a good job and although this result did not ‘s not so great, we will do better at Assen ".
Nicky Hayden (Honda # 69), retirement:
“We adjusted the bike slightly this morning to try to improve handling and make it easier to change direction. The bike was feeling better. I got off to a good start and gained a few positions in the first lap. I ended up in eighth position at one point, but by the second lap I had clutch problems which got worse with each lap, so much so that there was no way to finish the race. I then returned to the pits. We are obviously disappointed: it is not going for us at the moment, but there is a test tomorrow. Let’s see if we can make progress ".
