Below are the statements of the drivers who distinguished themselves on Saturday during the first round, and on the following page the statements of those who led the second WSBK race on Sunday. Honor to the winner !
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki n ° 1), 1st:
“I had the strongest race possible. Chaz was strong in areas where I wasn’t, and I was strong in portions where he wasn’t: so it was the kind of race or you learn a lot from it. Braking, changing direction and maintaining grip were really good today and I felt like I could rely on the tire to fight in the end but I couldn’t escape because in the middle of the track, Chaz was just a little faster. The only thing I could do in this race was to assault, put as much pressure as possible and wait for a mistake. The door opened a few inches. because Chaz missed a few ropes but eventually fell on the penultimate lap. First of all I hope Chaz is doing well. For me, it was the perfect opportunity to win another race. would have been very difficult to win the duel in the last lap against him because he was so strong in the last section. It’s a free win, but I’ll take it because I think I rode well "
Marco Melandri (Ducati n ° 33), 2nd:
“Yes, it was a tough race. We were expecting warmer temperatures which would have allowed us to use the softer rear tire, but the grip level was much lower today and we all had to adapt, to both in terms of electronics and driving style. Personally I struggled with the front axle. I opted for the new SC1 solution in development because I really liked it during testing, but I m I expected it to wear differently. I lacked grip on the max angle, and very quickly struggled to hold my lines in the fast corners. However, a second place is a good result for us today. We will obviously try to improve tomorrow, because each race is different "
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki n ° 66), 3rd:
“Sometimes the race gives you gifts, but we worked hard. My day started very badly because I woke up around four in the morning, a little sick. I suffered during the race. I couldn’t feed my body today: I could not eat and I could hardly drink anything. Fortunately in racing, we always find a way to get around these physical problems. I just suffered a little from the wind to make the bike turn. The traction was therefore essential. As the bike was not turning, I put too much strain on the rear tire. We will have another chance tomorrow. I hope my physical condition will be much better. The plan is to improve the ride a bit further. motorcycle tuning "
Alex Lowes (Yamaha n ° 22), 4th:
"I’m happy with this first race. It’s always difficult to start from 12th position, the first corners are quite tight here and I was not very confident after the small crash this morning caused by the cold and the wind. It took me a little while to get started. We were a bit unlucky in the Superpole so my first real lap of the day was the first lap of the race. Once started, I understood that I could have a solid race the bike was awesome and if we had started in front I think we would have had the chance to fight for the podium today. Anyway it was a nice final , my team did a really amazing job for me and we will try our luck again tomorrow ".
Michael van den Mark (Yamaha n ° 60), 5th:
“I think it’s natural to want to beat your teammate, but the fact that we’re so close again is really positive. It was a great race, we found a few tenths compared to yesterday, that’s good, and we finished fifth and fourth, which is really good for the team: we are progressing. Of course, I’m not satisfied with finishing fifth, but I’m happy that we are progressing with the R1 and, like I said yesterday i feel a lot better on the bike than when we first came here for testing. i can’t wait to be tomorrow, we’re both on the front row so it’s going to be very interesting ".
Jordi Torres (BMW n ° 81), 6th:
“In the end, we finished the race well. Due to a far from impressive start, due to the electronics, I found myself with a lot of work to do. I attacked from the start to win a few positions and I gradually came back up. It was a great race for us, considering the way it started. That said, I really want to do better tomorrow. It’s largely playable, as long as I take a best start ".
Leandro Mercado (Aprilia n ° 36), 7th:
“A month ago, I was at home watching the start of the season on TV, after my injury in training. And today I finally start my season, finishing the first round in the Top 10. This race was very difficult for me, for two reasons in particular: the wind and the behavior of the bike with a full tank. I got off to a good start and tried to stay with the leaders, but they had something more. In the second half of the race, the grip dropped a lot and I could not get past Jordi Torres who had passed me. Despite this, I managed to make my race and I am really happy to finish first Aprilia rider. I want to thank the Iodaracing team for the opportunity it gives me and the work they do on the track, Aprilia as well of course. Tomorrow we will try to make the most of our place on the grid (due to the new starting rules, Mercado will start four ième, in the second row, Score of his team) to have a good race ".
Eugene Laverty (Aprilia n ° 50), 8th:
“It was a really tough race. Eighth place is more than I thought I would get at one point, but I managed to stay ahead of a group and fought well against Bradl and Hayden. J I struggled with the braking which made overtaking a lot more difficult: I could take advantage of the Aprilia’s power in the straights, but braking is something we have to work on for the second round. Tonight and tomorrow we will have time to get down to the bike and assess what we are missing. If we can fix the problems today, I’m sure we can get a better result on Sunday. ".
Stefan Bradl (Honda n ° 6), 9th:
"This Saturday was not easy for us. For the first time this year, I got into a fight on the track and I had a lot of fun with Laverty, but I was a little behind in the straights because we had to use an old engine due to a problem in Superpole 2. The settings still need to be improved: we encountered several minor problems rather than a big one, but we can still work on them before race two. are the rear grip, but we also need to find some stability up front. Starting from sixth place will be interesting for me as we will be a little closer to the outposts. We will have the opportunity to learn more about it. on the guys in front ".
Chaz Davies (Ducati n ° 7), fall:
"After missing FP1 (first free practice session), we knew we were a little late, so today I just wanted to do my race. I was trying to keep Rea in the race. gap, overtaking it whenever I had the opportunity to do so, but with five laps to go I started to feel the bike was a little more nervous and more difficult to handle in the entrances. curve, the weight was coming and going on the front. This is what happened in the last corner, the bike locked without warning and I lost the front. I was lucky to survive without injury. Tomorrow we will try to get a good start and we will see if we can find the outposts. We want to win races "
Xavi Fores (Ducati n ° 12), fall then fire !
"I was angry with my crash because we could have a really good race. I was pushing to catch up with Sykes but I lost the front. When I got back on the track I heard a noise behind me and the motorbike caught fire: it was a scary moment for me because I could not jump. I suffered from burns in the neck and the right arm, but I hope that I can make up for it tomorrow ".
