World Superbike riders’ statements at the Lausitzring
The ninth round of the World SBK 2017 took place this weekend at the Lausitzring, Germany. To complete our near-live reports, here are the statements of the Superbike riders at the end of their two German races.
#GermanWorldSBK: statements from the 1st round
Site readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little more fortunate than others – have already been able to follow Saturday and Sunday, almost live, the progress of the Mondial Superbike and Supersport races on the Lausitzring circuit (for latecomers, read, then).
Find below the statements of the drivers who distinguished themselves on Saturday during the first round, and on the following page the statements of those who animated the second WSBK race on Sunday. Honor to the double winner !
Chaz Davies (Ducati n ° 7), 1st:
"The formation lap was chaotic, I almost went high-side in the last corner due to a problem with the rear brake. It made the few minutes on the grid intense, because usually you can’t intervene on this sort of thing in such a short period of time. But I have a good team that fixed it almost entirely, enough to allow me to use it as I wanted. I then got off to a good start and I was I found myself in good shape in the first few laps. Once I took control of the race, I tried to go at my own pace without paying attention to the lap times, and we won. The pace was good, but it is still possible to improve before the second run. We will start from 9th place, but I think this track offers some overtaking opportunities. And then we have been working on our starts recently, finding more consistency. I’m ready for a new one. interesting race ".
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki n ° 1), 2nd:
“At the start and in the middle of the race, I felt I had the pace to be with Chaz. Following him, I was wondering where I was going to be strong enough to pass and have my own race. I just tried to stay there as long as possible, hoping the gap widens behind. Subsequently, I started to suffer with the right side of my rear tire. I struggled to maintain my lap times and in some rights I kinda felt like I was riding on the ice. I managed my race, and the guys were amazing at the sign. When Chaz distanced himself, I couldn’t do anything to catch him. So I focused my efforts on maintaining a strong pace and saving my tire for the final laps. We won’t really know if we picked the right rear tire option today before we did. be together and have looked at the data.This weekend is also difficult due to the conditions and all the rain that we s have had. But the pace today was still much faster than the race of last year despite the weak grip ("green track" in English or "green track" which does not suit the Kawa pilot, editor’s note!), Or even more quick as my racing simulation during the test here in summer vacation. Hopefully it won’t rain so much tonight ".
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki n ° 66), 3rd:
“I had a good start and the times were good, but our main rival had something more than practice, we just missed each other. Was it about the tire choice? We went on the softer option … The only problem I encountered in the race was that I couldn’t get out of the corners as hard as I would have liked. We’re going to have to look at that for tomorrow. , I’m just disappointed that I didn’t convert pole position to a win today. But Chaz and Jonathan were strong and compared to last year the lap times were much faster. In Superpole the bike was running really good, was really consistent and did pretty much what I wanted ".
Marco Melandri (Ducati n ° 33), 4th:
“This race was not easy for us. In the very first few laps we managed to stay in the lead group, but as the rear tire wore out our bike started to move too much on the bumps and I was forced to give up the throttle so I lost contact with the riders in front of me. At first I tried to compensate by braking later but the more I attacked the more I committed mistakes, and I almost lost the front a couple of times. Our pace was in the highs of 1.37 today, we couldn’t do better and it would have been silly to take more risks. Tomorrow we try some modifications during the warm-up. The goal is to stay with our rivals throughout the race ".
Leon Camier (MV Agusta n ° 2), 5th:
"It was a really good race and I’m really happy because the bike worked really well. I put in a solid pace from the first lap and managed to do some nice overtaking too. I didn’t. was able to start with the leading group because I lost too much time passing the drivers at the start of the race, but I’m quite sure that if I had had an extra lap I could have passed Melandri as well. Many thanks to MV Agusta and my team for their excellent work and all their efforts ".
Alex Lowes (Yamaha # 22), 6th:
"It went pretty well today, I’m pretty happy with my race, especially considering our absence from the tests (Lowes competed with his teammate VDM in the Suzuka 8 Hours, Editor’s note) and yesterday’s dramas (engine failure in the afternoon, Editor’s note)! I had a very good race with Leon Camier but unfortunately I did not have enough confidence to overtake him. Congratulations to him, he did not make a single mistake and did a good job. I learned a lot during the race, my pace was genuinely better than expected and I think we can make good progress for tomorrow. I can’t wait to race the second run, the R1 is running much better last year on this track and I feel like I rode well today. I want to thank my team who did a great job this weekend, let’s see if we can take a step forward tomorrow! "
Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia n ° 32), 7th:
“The Superpole went well for me, and I was really happy for the team to get my first ‘front row’ this year. We made good progress in speed and I think we cut it down a lot. gap. In the race, I got off to a decent start, lost a few places but was able to keep fighting. I tried to maintain my pace and wait before attacking the leaders, but Shortly after halfway I suffered a traction problem on the bike, which kept me from pushing and wasted a lot of time. I wasn’t so happy to be only seventh, but these are good points to take and we know the areas to improve for the second race. I am happy to have a good speed in qualifying and I hope we can continue like this. ".
Xavi Fores (Ducati n ° 12), 8th:
"I’m very happy with this eighth place, mainly because at the end of the race I was riding better and faster. The bike has improved a lot thanks to the engineers who, once again, did a great job. In the last one. part of the race, my pace remained constant and I think tomorrow we will have a good race ".
Jordi Torres (BMW n ° 81), 9th:
"The Superpole went well and I got a good position on the grid (5th, Editor’s note). I started the race well, but on the third lap, I almost lost the rear, and gave up. many places. I had the same problem several times and lost confidence in the tire: we have to look at what happened because it was very strange. I ended up finding a rhythm, and I am recovered lap after lap. It’s a shame because I lost a lot of time passing the drivers in the peloton. I did what I could under the circumstances ".
Davide Giugliano (Honda n ° 34), retirement:
"The race was good, the time it lasted. At the beginning, with everyone around, I had a hard time being sharp: it was my first race with this bike after all … J So I lost a bit of ground. Then, when the peloton stretched out a bit, I was able to drive a bit more as I wanted and my pace improved. My lap times were not bad, I was even faster than the rest of the weekend. It’s a shame I was forced to retire due to a technical problem: the team is now trying to figure out what happened to prepare for tomorrow ".
