WSSP Netherlands: Sofuoglu easily beats Mahias and Cluzel
Absent from Phillip Island and Buriram, then ejected from his Kawasaki in Aragon, Kenan Sofuoglu had a perfect weekend in Assen with pole, fastest lap and victory! Very good Sunday for our French pilots too: Lucas Mahias and Jules Cluzel accompany the n ° 1 on the podium.
Departure : Kenan Sofuoglu jumped perfectly from his pole position while PJ Jacobsen remained glued to his second place on the Dutch grid. Lucas Mahias resists Sheridan Morais’ attack in the first corner and takes the wheel from Kenan. Next are Kyle Ryde, Jules Cluzel, PJ Jacobsen, Michael Canducci, Federico Caricasulo, Luke Stapelford, Christian Gamarino…
The champion and the championship leader immediately moved away from Morais and the rest of the peloton led by Ryde. Cluzel wins over Ryde in the 2nd round! Our n ° 16 is lodged immediately in the aspi of Morais and will undoubtedly not be long in attacking because in front, Sofuoglu and Mahias continue to widen the gap…
Jules just passed Sheridan on unstoppable braking at the eleventh corner of the third lap. Our "Coq Supersportif" whips his Honda n ° 16 to join the brand new Yamaha n ° 144 of Mahias and in turn moves away from the old Yamaha n ° 32 of Morais.
The second factory R6, n ° 64 driven by the young Federico Caricasulo, is approaching fourth place. Michael Canducci on his No.65 Kawasaki is a slower hint, but he dominates PJ Jacobsen on his No.99 MV Agusta F3 !
In the lead since the red lights went out, Sofuoglu distance Mahias … On the 6th lap, i.e. at the end of the first third of the race, the driver – strong as a – Turkish is two seconds ahead of our two compatriots: Cluzel has indeed caught up with Mahias !
Two laps later, Jules overtakes Lucas and leaves the Yamaha rider to fight against Sheridan Morais! A small second behind, Patrick Jacobsen passed Federico Caricasulo, but the young Italian recovered his fifth place a few moments later…
Sofuoglu increased his lead over Cluzel to almost three seconds at the start of the second half of the race. Mahias and Morais stop bickering in order to play second place. Then the n ° 144 climbs slightly on our compatriot n ° 16, while the n ° 32 lets go and finds himself threatened by the Italian n ° 64 … Caricasulo also passes in the 10th lap.
Back in the wheel of Cluzel, Mahias places an attack braking the chicane at the end of the 11th lap. The Yamaha widens slightly in the middle of the sequence but retains the advantage over the Honda at the exit of the last corner. Caricasulo took the opportunity to get back in touch. Morais and Jacobsen aren’t very far either !
With five laps to go, Sofuoglu is more than three and a half seconds ahead. Barring a technical glitch, the five-time champion has won the race! In the chase group, Caricasulo walks past his teammate Mahias. Morais and Jacobsen are on the lookout for any mistakes made by their competitors.
Lucas took third place from Federico under braking in the chicane and took second position from Cluzel on the 15th lap! Sheridan and PJ wisely lurk in the shadow of their competitors, perhaps waiting for the last lap to trigger an attack. ?
Jacobsen did attack Morais at the very end of the 17th lap, coming out of the chicane in fifth position. The American is a few lengths from Caricasulo but no longer hope to go find Cluzel and Mahias who fight half a second ahead for second place…
Kenan Sofuoglu clinches an impeccable victory, his first this season but the 39th of his career (in 117 Supersport races). Two and a half seconds after the "Number One", Lucas Mahias and Jules Cluzel pass together under the checkered flag.
Convinced – wrongly – that he was well ahead of his opponent and compatriot "Julo", the championship leader allows himself a nice rear wheel! The official Yamaha n ° 144 is finally ahead of the Honda n ° 16 by only five thousandths of a second on the finish line…
Mahias achieved an excellent operation in the championship then he totaled 65 points, against 45 for the new second Morais. Rolfo only scored a small point in Assen (41) but remained on the provisional podium ahead of Jacobsen (39) and Ryde (36). Cluzel is 7th with 29 points, Sofuoglu 9th with his first 25 points !
