#RiminiWorldSBK: statements from the 1st round
Site readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little more fortunate than the others – have already been able to follow Saturday and Sunday, almost live, the progress of the Mondial Superbike and Supersport races on the Misano circuit (for latecomers, read, then).
Find below the statements of the drivers who distinguished themselves on Saturday during the first round, and on the following page the statements of those who animated the second WSBK race on Sunday. Honor to the winner !
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki n ° 66), 1st:
“In the race, it’s all about the circumstances. Like in Donington, where we had great speed but the grid was reversed. In the end, the circumstances allowed us to win today and I’m happy for that. are going to take the 25 points and without asking for anything more. For tomorrow, we have to improve the settings of the bike. Already in the first round, I was thinking about tomorrow. But suddenly, the other riders had problems. In the race, you have to come to terms with that stuff. All I hope after seeing footage of his accident on the lap of honor is that Chaz is okay. It sounded mean, so I hope Chaz is OK and that he will be fit to run tomorrow. On our side, we take the 25 points and will look for the others tomorrow by ourselves ".
Alex Lowes (Yamaha n ° 22), 2nd:
“I am obviously happy to be on the podium! This weekend started very badly for me with 3 falls on Friday. I have never had on this track the feeling of the train before I had on all the other circuits, and I have to admit that I struggle. But in the race today I managed to get a good start and noticed that many other riders were struggling too. I managed to maintain a constant pace . Hope all the guys who fell are ok. My teammate Michael did a fantastic job all weekend, and it seems his accident wasn’t his fault – he deserved a lot more in this race. It’s nice to be on the podium and it’s great to see our hard work paying off. Even without the mistakes of the guys up front we would still have been relatively close to the front lines which is a good step forward for us. I am happy, this is a great result after a hard weekend and we hope to be able to appo make small changes on the bike to bring us closer to the battle for victory tomorrow ".
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki n ° 1), fall and 3rd:
“The strategy was just to let go of the brakes and get inside Chaz on the last corner, but unfortunately for both of us we didn‘t make it. It’s mostly unfortunate for Chaz. He made a mistake and lost the front. I’m so sorry I hit him but I had nowhere to go. I hope he’s okay. I don’t remember being on the podium in a race where I fell, maybe in the wet but I honestly don’t believe. After Van der Mark’s crash earlier in the race, I had to get off the track. I almost hit him and his bike m ‘almost typed. It’s been a lot of twists and turns. It’s a shame for Chaz and I, we were fighting for the victory ".
Jordi Torres (BMW n ° 81), 4th:
"Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the most out of the qualifying tire in Superpole. Then we all suffered a little from the hot conditions during the race. I battled with Fores and then with Laverty. At the end of the race, when others started to suffer we were able to stay strong. I know we were lucky, but I’m happy with our performance today. ".
Xavi Fores (Ducati n ° 12), 5th:
"We were expecting a difficult round, unfortunately we lost some ground in the first part of the race, then we picked up the same pace as the riders ahead of us. I attacked very hard to catch up with Torres but in the last one. lap, I decided to be careful. Considering the number of crashes in the last lap, a fifth place is positive for the championship ".
Eugene Laverty (Aprilia n ° 50), 6th:
“The race started well for me, but it was tough overall. I gained a few places in the first lap and struggled with the leaders. But after six laps I had problems with the front tire, then with the rear tire. From there it was just coming home. I was really riding on the wire. During the private tests we had some good long sessions. disappointing that we couldn’t do the same in the race. We can make changes to the chassis tonight and other things. We have to remain optimistic because we have a state-of-the-art engine and electronics : just run the frame around ".
Marco Melandri (Ducati n ° 33), fall and 15th:
“I had a great feeling on the bike this morning, but the track conditions changed with the heat and I didn’t have the same confidence during the race. When Rea passed me at the end of the race, we had lost about half a second on the leaders. In the last lap I wanted to stay as close as possible to the outposts as I thought the fight between Rea and Davies could open a door for me, but as soon as I let go the brakes in the 4th corner, I lost the front. Unfortunately we struggled with the grip throughout the race. In retrospect, it would have been better not to attack too much, but I remain satisfied in the end because we We had a lot in the last two races (Imola and Donington Park, Editor’s note). Our competitiveness on this track gives me confidence ".
Stefan Bradl (Honda n ° 6), retirement:
"There’s not much to say, really. The race was pretty much over on the first lap for me, and although I had to stop, the team were able to look for the problem and find a quick fix. . It at least allowed me to go back and complete 10-11 laps to check if everything was working fine and collect data. Hopefully things will be better tomorrow. ".
Michael van den Mark (Yamaha n ° 60), fall:
"This morning we made a slight change to the geometry of the bike and I felt great from the start! I improved my pace and was really happy. In SP2 my first lap on the race was really good, and after that I was very consistent. I made a little progress and was happy to qualify on the second row, in fifth place. In the race, I had a start bit strange, but it turned out really good! I was second in the first lap and in the next lap I veered in the lead in front of Jonathan Rea. I just rode at my own pace, he was not so stronger than expected, but it was good enough to get ahead of the others. Towards the end, I was still turning in the same pace and Jonathan was starting to come in. Then, for no reason, I lost the rear on a very fast. I don’t know what happened, but one thing is for sure: it was not my fault and we need to find out what the cause of the crash was. am happy because we had a very solid race, but very disappointed because it should have been my first podium, even the first victory for Yamaha ".
Ernesto Marinelli (Ducati, Superbike project director):
“The end of the race today leaves us with a bitter taste. Chaz and Marco had a memorable race. They both showed they can win but fell on the last lap. Marco will have another chance. tomorrow, when we are deeply saddened by what happened to Chaz. He will now observe a period of rest, but he has a strong character and I am sure that he will recover with the same courage as the one with which he short".
