WSSP Italy: Sofuoglu knocks out Mahias and beats Cluzel
Kenan Sofuoglu managed the WSSP race beautifully on the Misano circuit this afternoon! The five-time world champion dominated Jules Cluzel and won his fourth victory in a row. He goes back to five points behind the championship leader, Lucas Mahias, whom he cracked at the start of the race…
Departure : Kenan Sofuoglu takes a good start from his pole position, but Lucas Mahias takes an even better one from the second row! Kawasaki n ° 1 and Yamaha n ° 144 precede Federico Caricasulo and Jules Cluzel, but "Julo" is doubled by Christian Gamarino in the first sequence. Next are Luke Stapelford, PJ Jacobsen, Kyle Smith, Axel Bassani, Sheridan Morais, etc..
Lucas takes the lead at the end of the very twisty section at the start of the course. The 2017 championship leader was attacked by Kenan at the next turn Quercia, but he took the reins of the race before attacking the fast section of the return. Caricasulo, Cluzel and Gamarino are a few pitches away…
Sofuoglu attacks on the first braking of the 2nd lap and retains the advantage in the following sequence. What an unbridled start to the race! Kenan accelerates in the second lap but Lucas Mahias stays in his wheel while Caricasulo and Cluzel lose contact.
Mahias took tighter trajectories than the n ° 1 Kawasaki and was trapped at the entrance of turn n ° 4. The Yamaha rider loses the front but does not let go of his official R6 and immediately gets back on it. Unfortunately, he fell again on turn 8 and retired. A few moments later, it was Gamarino’s turn, then fourth, to finish his race in the gravel pit..
Sofuoglu finds himself alone in the lead, a short second ahead of Caricasulo who holds our national "Julo" in check. Jacobsen occupies a lonely fourth place, a big second behind the No. 16 Honda. Stapelford completed the Top 5 at the controls of his Triumph, half a second ahead of Smith. Rea (Gino), Bassani, Morais and West complete the Top 10.
While Kenan sets his pace in the lead, a great battle opens between Jules and Federico. Honda n ° 16 and Yamaha n ° 64 cross their paths several times in the 8th lap … But the CBR600RR of the PTR team ends up winning the match !
Cluzel quickly distanced Caricasulo and halved the gap between him and the No. 1 Kawasaki on the 9th lap. Sofuoglu is warned of the rise of this second French, but the Turkish does not react. One lap later, our "Coq Supersportif" finds himself in Sofuoglu’s wheel.
Jules takes Kenan’s suction at the exit of the first tortuous section of the Italian track and dislocates the Turkish rider in the – not quite – straight line. Sofuoglu turns around furtively and notices that Caricasulo is standing a few lengths away. The fourth is Jacobsen, placed two short seconds behind the Italian.
After completing two laps behind Jules, Kenan launched a braking attack from the Quercia in the 12th lap but widened and allowed his best enemy to pass again. Caricasulo watches from afar. But the Italian better focus on Jacobsen coming back strong…
Sofuoglu overtakes Cluzel again in the big chicane at the start of the layout, on the 13th lap. There are six laps to go and Jules takes Kenan’s wheel for one lap. Our dear n ° 16 lost a few lengths on the five-time world champion in the following lap.
Caricasulo is definitely dropped, but is no longer threatened by Jacobsen who remains stuck a second and a half from his target. Smith and Rea compete for fifth place, ten seconds behind the leaders. Bassani, Morais, West and Soomer are widely spaced from each other, virtually guaranteed to finish in the Top 10.
In front, Jules Cluzel remains in the rhythm of Kenan Sofuoglu but is too far to attempt any attack. Federico Caricasulo is three seconds behind the No.16 Honda and maintains a 1.5 second lead over PJ Jacobsen and his No.99 MV Agusta.
With two laps from the end, Cluzel continues to attack … and almost lost the front on the last stretch of the layout, turn 14! Jules knows it: he can no longer pick up Kenan and his Kawasaki which runs like clockwork. The Turk tumbles to victory alone…
With his fourth consecutive success this season, Kenan Sofuoglu has climbed five points behind Lucas Mahias whose counter is stuck at 105 points. Jules Cluzel is getting closer to third place occupied by Sheridan Morais eighth in the race today (75 points Vs 76).
As the World Supersport drivers are not invited to the American WorldSBK event (Laguna Seca, July 8 and 9), the next distribution of points for Kenan, Jules, Lucas and company, will take place in two months in Germany (Laustitzring , 20 August). Stay connected !
