#USWorldSBK: statements from the 1st round
Site readers – who, as everyone knows, are a little more fortunate than others – have already been able to follow Saturday and Sunday, almost live, the progress of the World Superbike races on the Laguna Seca circuit (for latecomers , read then).
Find below the statements of the drivers who distinguished themselves on Saturday during the first round, and on the following page the statements of those who animated the second WSBK race on Sunday. Honor to the winner !
Chaz Davies (Ducati n ° 7), 1st:
“I just had a tough few weeks, nailed to the couch or to the physio bed. Coming back and winning at Laguna Seca is so special. This victory means a lot to me, because I spoke to my team before coming here and I told them “if I can run, I’ll be ready to go for the win.” But, that’s easier said than done. The race was tough: the track temperatures were really high and the level of grip dropped. I couldn’t completely trust my before but I managed my own run. I expected Johnny to attack in the last laps but it never happened and we sealed one of the most memorable victories of my career. We will now think about an attacking strategy starting from the third row tomorrow ".
Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki n ° 1), 2nd:
“I thought this race was for me, but would be my race, but no one could take the victory from Chaz today. I felt really good in the middle of the race. Chaz could gain a few tenths on one lap, I was coming in to come back on him, and I thought this race was mine, but in the last seven laps I really struggled to get into the corners and the only place I was really falling behind was from the last corner to the first. Chaz stung me two to three tenths in the last seven laps in this section, too much for me to recover. I felt I was holding on everywhere except in this last section. We increased our lead in the championship but I still say that I don’t think about it before the summer holidays ".
Tom Sykes (Kawasaki n ° 66), 3rd:
“I felt my pace drop towards the end, but it was only the rear tire grip that reduced when entering a corner. It disappoints me, but there was nothing I could do about it. I did my best during the turn. racing to adjust my cornering and engine braking strategy, but nothing really replaces the grip. A lot of people talk about electronics, but when there is no more grip, there is more grip! We have made good progress compared to yesterday and we will try to be strong again tomorrow. We won a new Superpole today, it’s still good to take, but what I liked personally, c ‘is the fact that we have significantly improved our race configuration. We have to do the same for Sunday ".
Marco Melandri (Ducati n ° 33), 4th:
“Today’s race was a bit disappointing because we had a very solid pace during practice, but we struggled unexpectedly with the grip during the race itself, both front and back. ‘back. I couldn’t attack at the start, and hoped to improve as the race progressed, but unfortunately the reverse happened. I just tried to get the best result possible today, but we couldn’t do better than fourth this time. The heat made it more difficult for everyone, but we have to understand why it affected us more. Starting from pole tomorrow is relatively important, but first we have to solve the problems we encountered today. I am convinced that we will do it. ".
Xavi Fores (Ducati n ° 12), 5th:
"The tires suffered more than expected, and no one thought we would have these temperatures. I wish I could have followed Melandri immediately because we had the same pace and I think I could have fought for the fourth The fifth is still a positive result because we bring back some important points for the championship. Tomorrow, however, I hope to be able to stay closer to the first group by improving the set-up of the bike and attacking hard from the start. ".
Leon Camier (MV Agusta n ° 2), 6th:
"I’m really happy with this result today. During these two days we made some small changes and despite the hot conditions of the race the bike’s tuning today worked really well. I think that we learned a few tips about other options to take with the front tire, which is very positive. During the second half of the race I tried to get back on Fores but lost the front by a few times and I preferred to secure my place ".
Jordi Torres (BMW n ° 81), 7th:
“We know it’s a tough track and we have to work hard because our bike isn’t the smoothest to ride. So we’re looking for a setup that is suitable for the track and, although we’re not there yet arrived, we have ideas for tomorrow. We will continue to refine all this. We are not that far, but we still need a few tenths to be competitive in the race. However, I feel quite confident, and I think we can get even better tomorrow … "
Michael van den Mark (Yamaha # 60), 8th:
“I got off to a good start from 13th place on the grid, but Camier pulled away while I was on his outside, so I lost a number of places in the second corner. From there, j struggled to get the bike to turn, I attacked really hard and found the limit: to be sure I had to go much slower than this morning. I was not happy with this pace but towards the end, I got back on the group in front of me and managed to get past two of them. I think eighth was the maximum possible today. We have to find something to allow us to get closer to the fronts– positions tomorrow. For the moment, the gap with the winner on this track is too high. It will be good to start from the second row tomorrow, in the company of fast guys. I hope we can improve in the second run, be a lot faster".
Jake Gagne (Honda # 45), 15th:
"It was a good race and I’m really happy. The most important thing is that we completed the 25 laps and we learned a lot about the handling of the bike throughout the race. I have a lot. Also learned from the riders I rode with. To finish my first World Superbike race in the points is a dream come true. So I can say that I had a good day. It is a good basis for tomorrow: we will try to make improvements, I have some really great people to work with, so I’m going to try to be a little faster tomorrow ".
Eugene Laverty (Aprilia n ° 50), fall:
"We were in the Top 5 all weekend, and it was really nice to confirm in Superpole today with our best qualifying, in fifth place. Our pace was what we hoped for and expected, just behind the usual top four. In the race unfortunately, I got off to a good start but the lead bikes got away. I had a really bad feeling at the front, with too little grip. I tried to hang on, before to give up halfway through the race. It was very frustrating because the bike ran really well all weekend, and suddenly bad in the race. Pirelli will look into this, because the tire did not look normal, it was maybe flawed. I don’t want to tempt the devil too much before the second run as we should have run well today. Hopefully we can learn what caused the crash today: if it was a tire, then we will know the bike is fine. The rear tire was holding up, which was not before. So there are some good points to remember today ".
