WorldSBK: FIM and Dorna end Superstock 1000
Antechamber to World Superbike – just like World Supersport, hmm? -, the European Superstock 1000 will take part this weekend at Magny-Cours for its final race. According to the organizers, the WorldSBK will thus gain in legibility and the national championships in visibility… Explanations.
This was to be expected: since 2012 and the merger between Dorna (promoter of) and Infront (promoter of), the regulations of the Superbike world championship seek to distinguish themselves from those of the Grand Prix and its prototypes … and tends to get closer to the Superstock and its bikes close to the series !
"We have the firm intention to develop and reinforce the specific character of MotoGP and WorldSBK", affirmed at the time Carmelo Ezpeleta, big boss of Dorna, eager to work "in close collaboration with the teams and the manufacturers, the operators of circuits, sponsors and broadcasters ".

In order to energize the Superbike, the championship organizers are now obliged to stop the Superstock, although the latter was exclusively reserved for riders under 28 (no limit in Superbike) and evolves on a scale lower, being contested only in the European rounds of the World SBK (8 events out of 13).
"After 19 successful seasons across Europe, 17 different champions and six different titled constructors, the decision not to continue with this category was taken following the evolution of the technical regulations of the WorldSBK in recent years", jointly justify the FIM and Dorna.
According to the federation and the promoter, "the withdrawal of the STK1000 category from the WorldSBK paddock will bring, in the future, more visibility to the national STK championships (and SBK especially, Editor’s note?) In Europe", in addition to clarifying the format of the world championship: World Supersport 300, World Supersport 600 and World Superbike. Yes, on the model of Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP.
Superstock breaking…
As a reminder, the European championship – formerly "cup" – of Superstock 1000 was won by big names in world speed: James Ellison (MotoGP), Michel Fabrizio (WSBK), Niccolo Canepa (world endurance champion), Xavier Simeon (MotoGP), Davide Giugliano (WSBK), Leandro Mercado (MotoGP), Lorenzo Savadori (WSBK), Rafaelle de Rosa (Moto2 and WSSP)…
Winner last year, Michael Rinaldi had the opportunity to ride this 2018 season alongside Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri within the Ducati factory team … as a "junior" rider on European races: he landed seven top 10s … but no handlebars for next year !
For French fans, the European Superstock 1000 is forever associated with which, like Ellison, shone two years in a row, but on the same machine: the! ,, Romain Lanusse,, Florian Marino and they also made sparks in the category, but did not impose themselves.
Finally, let us remember that the Superstock 1000 also allowed Danilo Petrucci to be spotted by the Ioda team registered in the CRT "subcategory" of MotoGP in 2012. The flamboyant Italian had finished second in the STK1000 on the Ducati 1098R of the Barni team. .. It will be in 2019. Mamma mia !
