WorldSSP France: Jules Cluzel emerges as a big boss
After his disappointment at Portimao, Cluzel managed "his" test at Magny-Cours extremely well. The No. 16 Yamaha wins ahead of his best enemy Cortese, still leading the championship. Unlucky in Portugal too, Mahias snatches third place. Perolari shines too.
Winner of the incredible Portimao race two weeks ago, Federico Caricasulo landed yesterday afternoon at Magny-Cours a magnificent Superpole, beating in the last moments the two French favorites: the reigning champion Lucas Mahias and the second of the provisional Jules Cluzel who settle in this order behind the Italian.
The leader of the 2018 championship – and reaper of our "Julo" in Portugal … – Sandro Cortese fell again in SP2 and must be content with fourth place on the grid. He is placed in front of Randy Krummenacher … and Corentin Perolari on his own R6 prepared by the GMT94 !
Departure : Mahias sticks to Caricasulo during acceleration and takes the lead of the race ahead of Cluzel! Jules brakes Lucas in Adelaide. The French n ° 16 and 144 are chased by the Italian n ° 64 and the French n ° 6: Perolari! Corentin gets hot on the way out of the Water Tower and has to let Krummenacher pass…

The leading trio completed the first lap with a small second ahead of the peloton led by the Swiss n ° 21 … Not long, however, since Corentin won over Randy under Adelaide braking and escaped towards the leading group! Krummenacher is now threatened by Cortese and Gradinger.
De Rosa on MV Agusta, Okubo on Kawasaki and Smith on Honda complete the Top 10 dominated by Yamaha. Perolari sets the best time in the 2nd lap: the small – but strong one! – French melts on Caricasulo then delays in the next round.
Krummenacher forced himself to return to contact with the four leading men but could not match the pace of his Yamaha colleagues. The yellow n ° 21 even asks a little too much of his machine and his tires: he avoids a high-side at the exit of Adelaide and is passed by Cortese, then Gradinger, as well as De Rosa.
Cluzel prints his tempo, just below 1 ’42. Mahias and Caricasulo quietly follow n ° 16, allowing Cortese to come back! One lap after passing Perolari – having trouble with his tires ?! -, the leader of the double Caricasulo championship in Adelaide.
Jules accelerates slightly on the 6th lap. But his best enemy in the championship, Sandro, turns a little faster and easily passes Lucas under Adelaide braking … The German now has his runner-up in the standings in the viewfinder. "Julo" may not have a choice: we will have to put more gas !

The gaps widen slightly at the halfway point. Mahias is in turn the victim of a small slip from the rear on the outskirts of the Water Tower … The world champion – and his teammate placed in his wheel – yields a few lengths to the two leaders.
At the 9th braking in Adelaide, Cortese passes in front of Cluzel but cannot stay in front at the exit of the hairpin. Just behind them, Caricasulo manages to win over Mahias. Perolari occupies fifth place, two short seconds behind n ° 144.
Gradinger – Cluzel’s teammate – found himself in Perolari’s aspiration and passed our "unbridled beginner" on the 11th lap. De Rosa is threatened by Krummenacher. Smith, Okubo, Soomer and Barbera all fight for ninth place.

Eight laps from the end, Cluzel accelerated again but Cortese and Caricasulo held on. Mahias, on the other hand, does not react so quickly. Sandro attacks Julo in Adelaide but the Frenchman is doing wonderfully again in the acceleration !
The two rivals are teaming up on the descent to Nurburgring! The n ° 16 plunges in front of the n ° 11 in the chicane and keeps a small advance on the end of the course. In the 14th lap unfortunately, Cortese picked up the orange, white and green R6. The two official Yamaha remain behind…
Eight seconds later, Krummenacher sets up times comparable to the leading quartet and climbs up to Perolari, sixth on his Yamaha n ° 6. In front, Cortese and Cluzel once again switch places, briefly. Cluzel remains the boss, Cortese spits in the gloves, Caricasulo and Mahias observe.
With three laps to go, Perolari took advantage of Krummenacher’s gap in Adelaide to recover "his" sixth place. But the n ° 21 came out very strong from Estoril in the following lap and passed Christophe Guyot’s foal from the outside..

In front, Cluzel drives the point home! Cortese finds himself too far away to attempt any attack, even suicide, on the French. The German was even caught by the two factory pilots in the final climb to the Water Tower … Lucas overtook his teammate Federico. Maybe surprised, the Italian loses the front !
Deprived of a podium or even of victory two weeks ago by the championship leader, Jules Cluzel held his revenge and won his fourth victory this season. It takes five – small or large? – points on Cortese, second in the race.

Betrayed by his rear tire in Portimao while he was leading largely, Lucas Mahias finally finds the podium, which he has not climbed since Thailand six months ago. Now accusing 50 points behind the provisional, he toasts in the company of his probable successor … Julo or Sandro ?
Eleven seconds behind his teammate Cluzel, Gradinger obtained a very good fourth place. Krummenacher completes the Top 5 and climbs to third place in the provisional. Starting again after his fall, Caricasulo scores three points for 13th position.
Congratulations to Corentin Perolari who finally won "his" sixth place in "our" French event! Behind the six R6s are the first MV Agusta, Honda and Kawasaki. Next distribution of points; in two weeks on the new argentinian circuit … Jules Cluzel told us this week that he was looking forward to going there. With this home win, he must be in even more of a hurry !
