Bunny in the pit? Not really. This is more about the car screwdriver in the pit, which, during a preliminary check in the workshop, likes to turn hidden parts of the vehicle to be screwed into the right place
Lights up in order to more or less gently teach the customer with a muttered “We’ll have to help!” That it will be really expensive this time.

2/25
The Lena Cobus Duo LED: Stands securely, adheres reliably to metal and provides good surface light. They can also be bent and twisted.
mps photo studio
3/25
The ELRO FL306 occupies 5th place. The slightly different workshop lamp with unusual operation. That polarizes: You love or hate the part. There are no two opinions that it is a bit unwieldy for a motorcycle.
mps photo studio
4/25
The ELRO FL306: To activate the surface light, the “dumbbell”
just pulled apart.
mps photo studio
5/25
The OBI LED panel light lands in 4th place. Compact and handy, neatly processed, also bright and with very long endurance – the DIY store brand is completely convincing in everyday workshop life. And at a very attractive price.
mps photo studio
6/25
The OBI LED panel light: Until the stand and hook are outside, many a fingernail is at risk.
mps photo studio
7/25
The Bernese Pocket deLux Bright is on the podium. A very sturdy lamp for rather sturdy types – the magnet and width are something for real fans. Shines much brighter than the measured value suggests and is well suited for on the go.
mps photo studio
8/25
The Berner Pocket deLux Bright: The foldable frame provides a secure stand; the hook is easy to use.
mps photo studio
9/25
The Philips Penlight Premium slid past 1st place. It’s expensive and good. Really really good! Great light, excellent workmanship, impeccable handiness. A real professional device that has its price, but is inexpensive in the truest sense of the word.
mps photo studio
10/25
The charging cable of the Philips Penlight Premium can be disconnected from the mains plug and serves as a USB connection.
mps photo studio
11/25
The PL-023 LED work lamp from Kunzer took first place. Bright and practically designed, properly processed and all at a very fair price – the house brand of the renowned workshop equipment supplier delivers a worthy test winner.
mps photo studio
12/25
The 6th place goes to the Lena Cobus Duo LED. The disappointing spotlight and the heavy price spoil the result a bit, but the basis would have been good for a “very good”. The bottom line is a rock solid performance.
mps photo studio
13/25
The AEG FL 80 panel light: When opened, there are two separately switchable LED fields to choose from.
mps photo studio
14/25
The AEG FL 80 panel light takes 7th place. Nothing for on the go and only partially helpful when researching behind side covers and under mudguards. But quite suitable as an additional light on the workbench or lifting platform.
mps photo studio
15/25
The Pansan 5022SDM Li-Ion lands in last place. It is not a really bad lamp, but in direct comparison with the strong competitors, this model falls significantly behind. The price, which is too high – also in direct comparison – doesn’t make it any easier.
mps photo studio
16/25
The Pansan 5022SMD Li-Ion: Simply fold-out hook; Magnet too weak – there is also light and shadow on the back.
mps photo studio
17/25
The Brennenstuhl 28 LED battery-powered hand lamp shares the last place with the Pansan. The joy of the bright light quickly gives way to the disillusionment of the only moderate lighting. The workmanship is okay, and the price is okay – still only mediocre.
mps photo studio
18/25
The Brennenstuhl 28 LED battery-powered hand lamp: Here, piano player hands are required to simply unfold the hook.
mps photo studio
19/25
The ring REIL2500 took 10th place. No lavish features, no outstanding burn time, plus a somewhat coarse design and a relatively high price – little can be achieved with this in this strong test field.
mps photo studio
20/25
The REIL2500 ring: Half a deal – the plastic claw is not really good either as a hook or as a stand.
mps photo studio
21/25
The Bosch WorkLight lands in 9th place. A little too weak as a pure workshop lamp and not entirely practical due to the lack of a magnet and hook. However, the cuddly piece is well suited as a universal or camping lamp for on the go.
mps photo studio
22/25
The Bosch WorkLight: Handy and compact with a foldable lamp head. But without a magnet.
mps photo studio
23/25
The ProPlus workshop lamp COB LED takes 8th place. There really wasn’t much that was missing to make a good judgment. Luminosity and endurance are completely convincing, but in terms of equipment and workmanship, the hand flatterer leaves a few points behind.
mps photo studio
24/25
The ProPlus workshop lamp COB LED: A hook instead of a belt clip would have been even more practical. The magnet is small but over-
surprisingly strong.
mps photo studio
25/25
Di Kunder LED work lamp PL-023: You can really bend it – the light head can be swiveled by 120 degrees and shines really brightly to the test victory.

Fiddling in the darkroom
We do not know which light sources the representatives of the Leporidae use to illuminate their territory. In any case, professional screwdrivers (Monteurus vulgaris) use the master lamp. Twelve brighteners in the test.

Bunny in the pit? Not really. This is more about the car screwdriver in the pit, who likes to put hidden areas of the vehicle to be screwed in the right light during a pre-check in the workshop, to more or less mutter to the customer with a muttered “We have to go there!” to gently teach that it will be really expensive this time. Since this job is one of the almost sovereign tasks of a real motor vehicle master and the lamp used is usually stowed in the official smock of the said expert when not in use, one speaks of “master lamps” in the scene. These are often battery-operated miniatures, but more and more handy battery lamps are also being used.

This story is about them. The motorcycle screwdriver rarely hangs around in pits, but to go on the hunt for lost screws in the depths of opened components or just to be able to read the correct tire designation in the dark garage, such a beam man is a pretty good thing. The juice for the light is now mainly supplied by lithium-ion batteries – nine of the twelve lamps tested are equipped with them. “Li-Ion” does not necessarily mean that, compared to the nickel-metal hydride batteries (NiMH) that are otherwise in use for a long time, a more modern energy supply is available. “Lithium-ion” is just a generic term for all batteries in which lithium is involved – and there are many different types of them in much more different (manufacturing) qualities.
This is how MOTORRAD tests: Fumbling in the darkroom
MOTORRAD bought all of the test samples in January 2014 in hardware stores, car accessories shops and on the Internet. The lamps were measured, weighed and then fully charged according to the respective operating instructions. Then we went to the darkened photo studio of Motor Presse Stuttgart for “light measurement”. The aim was to deliver as much light as possible in the direction of a professional light meter (Lunasix 3 from Gossen) from a distance of one meter. The value given in the data boxes under “Light intensity” has no units, is normally used as a factor for exposure correction and in this case is a good reference value – rule of thumb: the higher the value, the more light. After the measurement, the lamps, brought back to full charge, had to show how long they lasted non-stop until they went out or until they reached a light intensity that was no longer suitable for screwdriver purposes.
The phrase “emergency lighting” in the data boxes describes the phase following the bright work light, in which the LEDs only provide very dim light and possibly only glow. For lamps with the option of spot and area light, MOTORRAD chose area light. The fully charged lamps were then allowed to show in a darkened storage room to what extent the more theoretical light measurement values matched the practical light perception of two test persons and whether they were e.g. B. dazzle or scatter.

MOTORCYCLE final scoring
BILLION
The final score of the product test.
Conclusion
And where is the legendary MOTORCYCLE buyer’s tip now? There is no separate one, because the test winner is also the model that offers the most for the money – a test cannot go any better. However, if you want a little more handiness and processing quality and don’t want to / have to look too hard on your money, you can buy the Philips Penlight Premium – a real professional device that is made to last.
But even behind the two products rated “very good”, there is consistently decent quality to be found. The OBI house brand model in particular impresses with a very good price-performance ratio. Those who place less value on mobility, but rather on lighting flexibility in the workplace, could be happy with the AEG panel light. And even in the “satisfactory” class there are still real treasures slumbering: for example the Bosch WorkLight as a very good travel lamp instead of a satisfactory workshop lamp.
Lithium-ion or NiMh batteries?
However, lithium-ion batteries generally have the advantage that they usually do not self-discharge as quickly as batteries from the pre-Li-ion era and do not have a memory effect. Their disadvantage, however, should not be underestimated: If they can no longer do it, it usually happens immediately. NiMh rechargeable batteries, on the other hand, slowly become weaker, and LEDs that glow more tired indicate the need for recharging in good time.
So you don’t have to turn the question of Li-Ion or NiMH into a matter of faith. The NiMH batteries, which are usually somewhat cheaper in production, still have their justification. Still, it’s not enough for a place on the podium in this test, but that’s definitely not (only) due to the battery technology.
