After giving birth to the incredible XB-9R and its equally surprising chassis (frame containing gasoline, oil in the swingarm, 92 hp Harley engine, minimalist wheelbase, very sensitive suspensions), we thought of giving him a little sister to fight in the street. We take out the screwdrivers, we replace the fork crown with 2 small headlights and a nose screen, we swap the handlebars-bracelets for a handlebars (with footrests and a lower saddle, it allows to change the position driving), 2-3 small odds and ends and here is the XB-9S. Looks like a roadster that wants to kick things off. Like the XB-9R, the Lightning requires a period of adaptation but a different user manual: as much its sister is akin to a tracker that you have to drive almost like a competition 125, as much as the S demands a driving coiled, which results in a bluffing efficiency.
The technical solutions retained are the same as for the XB-9R and this Buell remains in fact an atypical machine. The bike is ultra compact, hyper-agile and, while its performance is not extraordinary in absolute terms, the available power can be used to its fullest on the road. The gearbox is slow and lacks precision; and the engine does not like going to touch the top of the tachometer. But the philosophy of the Buell is not there: on its handlebars, there is no point in rushing it! When winding, the efficiency is startling and the speed of passage in curve incredible. A real toy. Which is not without flaw: the rear brake has forgotten to be effective, the turning radius is abominable, the duo is synonymous with torture; as for protection and autonomy, quite simply not provided for in the specifications. But the XB9S is a roadster with a strong character, uncompromising, and packed with sensations..
