2008 Buell 1125 R

Buell Company celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2008. An age where reason begins to coexist with experience, but above all, we are still very young and we want big watts and a crazy machine. Well, at Buell it’s the same. A quarter of a century after its birth, the small brand presents its own definition of hypersport: the 1125 R. A high performance motorcycle that has little to do with the Japanese, apart from the big horses and the racing spirit. But Erik Buell has cocktails with his mechanical genius…

Behind this aggressive face, somewhat “constricted” of the eyes, and these shoulders of an American footballer is about to shake Erik’s new opera. But what’s on this score, and how was it designed? First of all, recover the excellent chassis of the XB series but overhauled. The engine is used as a stiffening part, placed further forward in the frame and has nothing to do with the mechanics used until now by Buell. The new swingarm is anchored further forward in the crankcases and still contains engine oil. The inverted fork has particularly grown: 47 mm in diameter, new bearings reducing friction on the dip tubes and titanium fork caps. With this and the new IRC (Intuitive Response Chassis) frame, the chassis of the 1125 R is the stiffest ever built by the American manufacturer..

The HELICON engine – 146 horsepower

25 years of Harley motorization (seriously damaged all the same) and suddenly, zapping. Gone are the long-stroke air-cooled twins infused with the Sportster HD – the new twin cylinder is a very modern, compact, closed machine with an angle of 72 °, equipped with an injection, super-square dimensions of 103 x 67.5 mm, liquid cooling, 4 valves per cylinder, 3 balance shafts, double ACT, dry sump lubrication, 61mm double inverted throttle bodies … Perfect equipment for a latest generation hypersport bag. And this displacement, 1125 cm3, would not be the recent and fiery twin of the V-Rod, adapted for sport use by the genius Buell !?!

Helicon 1125 R motorNot at all. And we are in the presence of a sacred change at the manufacturer. For the first time, it is not an American H-D moulbif which is encrusted in the frame of a Buell. This is an Austrian engine, developed by very precise specifications from Erik’s staff. A twin ROTAX, the famous engine manufacturer who manufactures, among other things, the Aprilia RSV 1000 bi. A pledge of seriousness and power. And for those who are still in shock, here is something to do you good: the boiler spits 146 nags and more than 11 mkg of torque. One question remains: why the choice of a foreign engine and not an American one? ?
Around this big twin, elements further optimize the mechanics. The pressurized air box (12 l) allows 5% more performance. The radiators are placed laterally, behind the sides of the fairings … or rather, in the enormous vacuum scoops. Their position is calculated to optimize the centering of the masses and the center of gravity. Moreover, the arrangement of each element on the 1125 R has been designed with this in mind. This is particularly the case of the exhaust system, placed as always under the saddle; Buell’s side says that “the muffler is tuned to deliver linear power and torque curve while removing the cost, weight and complexity of an active exhaust system. A Helmholtz chamber located in the muffler further reduces noise. “. In short, no EXUP, a somewhat smooth behavior for more efficiency, and gas half stifled by anti-noise standards. So, by putting a good adaptable pot, it should deposit harsh, like the baton of your neighbor when you start. The police will eventually calm you down, except on the track (and again, not all).

On the brakes side, Buell didn’t have to look far to find beefy. We find here the system of the XB-RR, with a perimeter disc of 375 mm and a brake caliper with 8 pistons. At the rear, the 240 mm disc is clamped by a double piston caliper directly anchored to the swingarm; which saves 680 g compared to a conventional system.
2008 Buell 1125 RAs far as the transmission is concerned, the Rotax claw with an anti-dribble clutch and a 6-speed gearbox, and the HD-Buell difference with a belt showing only 680 g (a chain kit weighs about 2 kg) ).
And for agility and sport, a column angle of only 21 °, a wheelbase of 1384 mm (9 mm more than the CBR 600 RR 2007), an angle taking announced of 48 ° before the rests. feet rub, and a dry weight of only 170 kgs.

Sporty, of course, but also comfortable. This is the goal sought by this 1125 R, to combine values of courtesy and an authentic and sensational sportiness. Not easy, but the Buell does it with adjustable levers and toe clips, aerodynamics that optimize performance and rider comfort, and there’s even a pre-plugged switching device for the optional installation of heated grips. On this motorcycle, surprises follow one another and are not alike. A half-analog, half-digital dashboard reveals itself before your eyes, with a mess of information – alcohol – and on the sides, we are stunned by seeing classic containers and not separate jars for brake fluids and clutch.

Once again, Buell amazes us, with a lot of sensations in anticipation, and performances that are oh so promising. More than that … With this new engine, a new family should be born around this 1125 R. And unlike the XB-RR, which is also very sporty, this bomb should prove to be affordable. At 25, we dream of conquering the world, and Erik Buell is doing pretty well in his ascent.
