This machine will certainly be one of the most emblematic creations of BMW Motorrad. In order to properly celebrate its 90th anniversary, the Bavarian factory offered itself a pure creation with this R Nine T. More than a roadster developed on the basis of R 1200 R, we would almost see the ultimate field of honor of the air-cooled flat twin, the last blaze before takeover by the fleet-cooled generation. And what aplomb! Gone are the days when Behème was shameless with an effrontery like the 1150 Rockster. Today is personalization, a wild dream, a big dry cake for the ninety-fold birthday.
The Nine T (pronounced naïne ti, like the number 90 chanted in English) is armored in style, with a sporty front end, 17-inch spoke rims, a long tank as if to lie on it, a very rear frame. “old English”, an old-fashioned double sports exhaust. A cafe racer? No, not exactly: with flat-track handlebars and a search for form before sportiness, the NineT is more like a Cafe-Roadster. A real treat for lovers of the genre.
Boxer I was born, Boxer I remain. A sort of tribute to the 1923 R32, this pleasure machine tickles the eyes of the nostalgic as well as the amateur of beauty, with the good old Air / Oil Boxer and its 110 horsepower as its engine. A little more than 12 mkg of torque to lift all that, and the watts which cross the cardan and Paralever assembly, the latter being perfectly clear here; we stay in the technical and modern world of the R 1200 R. On the front side, it’s more radical. Unthinkable to imagine the Telelever on a machine of this ilk … The NineT borrows its fork straight from the S 1000 RR hypersport, without forgetting to afford 4-piston radial brake calipers and 320 mm tracks. diameter. All this for 222 kilos on the scale and a dynamic balance that promises to be formidable.
With this Nine T, BMW goes further in customization, because its neo-retro model is modular. The frame is designed in such a way that the user can unbolt the rear frame to install a short single-seater, standard for duo or adorned seat shell. Disappointment however, the presence of the original instrumentation of the R 1200 R – a specific version, more vintage or more singular, would have been better suited to this roadster of character. You can rest assured with the well-supplied options catalog that accompanies the Nine T.
