The road can be intense while being bathed in a certain pleasure. When we think of sport, we easily fall into the category of the bloody roadster or the high tension sportswoman. By mixing a little of both with a dose of road, we end up with the R 1250 RS. A subtle evolution of the 1200 of the same name, keen to assert itself and to offer an alternative. Often compared to the iconic Honda VFR, the Reise Sport is stuck in a versatility that makes all its charm. It is time for him to expose himself more.
But how ? Not easy in a world where the Sport-GTs have not been popular for a very long time, in a range where the GS, S 1000 RR, R NineT, RT and K 1600 monopolize the glory, in an era where driving with joy is rewarded with fines or suspended jail.
It annoys … The RS feels it, to the point of frowning and returning its gaze in the sockets. Formerly symmetrical, wide open as curious about the world, the eyes of the RS have tapered with the 1250, emphasizing their presence in a facies of mandibles.
The rest of the casing, the shapes, the wheels, do not change from the 1200. The fork crown is THE main style evolution of this machine. And also inside. What kind of voracious motorcycle could do without Riding Modes today? Almost no longer one, and not the R 1250 RS at all. As standard, it receives “Road” and “Rain” Modes, ASC traction control and Hill Start Control. A checkbox on the order form to obtain the Riding Mode Pro, optional, a dose of programming in addition and presto, here is the “Dynamic” mode and its counterpart “Dynamic Pro”. The latter has the specificity of being configurable.
This Pro extension is very tempting for fans of piloting aids. Because in addition to the two additional Modes, it adds DTC Traction Control, Cornering Responsive ABS Pro, New DBC Engine Brake Control and Hill Start Control Pro. What’s this ? A gradient of +/- 5% and the hill start assistant is automatically activated when the brakes are applied.
The chapter of the options will not be approached much, unless one stuck with four pages of listing. Let’s quickly get rid of the oil cans, the USB cable extension and the polishes to see the essentials. Shifter, keyless start, heated grips, cruise control, emergency call, saddles of various kinds, LED daytime running lights and many customized parts “Option 719”; without forgetting the latest generation of Dynamic ESA adaptive suspension.

Perhaps you have paid attention to the fact that the R 1250 RS does not have a Telelever for its front axle. This element intimately linked to the technical evolution of BMW motorcycles has not been repeated on certain models, including the RS since 2015. It relies on a large inverted 45 mm fork, a distant cousin of that of the ex-S 1000 RR. The Paralever single-sided gimbal is still there, while a tubular steel structure holds all the technical parts together. How do you stop the 243 kilos of the machine? With two 320 mm discs clamped by radial 4-piston calipers, which will not be afraid of the additional 7 kilos compared to the 1200. The rear brake is provided by a 276 mm disc and its double-piston caliper. Small clarification as to the close relationship of this sport-GT RS with the R 1250 R – if the first is largely based on the roadster, it benefits on the other hand from a larger wheelbase of 15 mm, a guarantee of better stability.
More tonic, more flexible, almost more aggressive, the BMW R 1250 RS takes up the leitmotif of the 1200 with enough to ensure a good dose of pleasure for years to come. A way of seeing rapid tourism, as we did in the past and little today. We will salute his presence all the more.
The R 1250 RS will be available under several approvals.
The Basic version likes it dark, laying it on its brake calipers, trim, frame and rims.
In Exclusive, gray takes over the frame and gold takes care of the brake calipers.
It is especially in its Sport version that the RS stands out from other “colors”. The contrast is more striking with black lacquered rims, a white painted frame and an overall lively color. The engine guard is larger and in stainless steel.
