Harley-Davidson returns to transformist land with the Sport Glide. A motorcycle wanting to combine the joys and precepts of several worlds, to the sound of a big machine full of torque. The concept of a “convertible machine” is not new to Harley. For a long time, from time to time, a model appears which can be transformed at leisure. The goal of customizing you will tell me? Not quite. It is important to take stock:
Difference between adding accessories and configuring a convertible model
A grinding wheel can be accessorized. We have the possibility, within the limits of the approvals and that of the imagination of the props, to add or remove certain elements. And sometimes the result, in terms of aesthetics, leaves much to be desired. Do you doubt it? So look at a Street-Bob with a windshield: efficient but not very harmonious…
The concept of convertible takes this to the extreme by offering an opposite alternative: we do not start from the accessory that can be put on the grinding wheel but we manufacture a grinding wheel that can perfectly integrate this or that accessory. The goal ? There are three: to be able to transform your motorcycle at will, to keep a fluid and acceptable line when these accessories are present or not and to be able to access great versatility..
In short, do something useful and not ugly when you add unsightly appendages while retaining the advantages of each proposed configuration. A real puzzle no ?
Ah the Touring models from Harley … A carrying capacity of a liner and a capacity to swallow kilometers at the height of an elephant. We settle down in the living room armchair, we put a little music in the background and we let ourselves slide on the large ribbon. The superlatives are there. Yes, but…
Yes, but here it is: to go get your bread on Sunday or hit a collar, there is really a hassle. The monster shows its limits. So take a Softail? Why not, but there is the distance traveled that will bring you back to reality. The wind in the squash, the saddle closes, the total lack of protection and the impression after two hundred motorway terminals that an A380 has taken off in the helmet. And again, I’ll spare you the fact of not having been able to take your rain combarde for lack of space and having to take a storm worthy of the name! Personally, I like it but I must admit that when you get home, between the buzzing ears, the cramps in the neck and the stewed buttocks, you need a little time to adapt to be able to discuss again with your fellows. Some would say that after all, it is an extension of tranquility. The debate is on! But back to the Sport Glide.
For this machine, it seems that the engineers did the opposite: do not start from a Dyna and put it in Softail sauce but start on a Softail base and put it in … Softail sauce! And yes because the Dyna frame having disappeared, we can no longer label it with this term. Nevertheless, we can easily guess the leg of the new “Dyna” despite the presence of the new Softail frame.
So we take the playful side of the last frame, the strong character of the new Milwaukee Eight engine and we make something that looks like a touring. Except that there, we graft him of origin of the accessories which integrate well and which can be dismantled at leisure (bat-wing and bag). Thanks to this, in theory, we can find the maneuverability of the new Softails and an ability to travel close to Touring.
On the technical side, we have an M8 of 107 cubic inches (with a torque of 145 NM) placed in the falsely rigid frame. The set weighs 304 kg and has a nice dress (very black on the engine side and exhaust silencer). The bat-wing (it’s the fairing above the headlight) is removable as are the lockable saddlebags. On a more technological level, we find, among others, LED headlights, keyless start and a USB port.
So yes, the bat-wing less prominent than that of a Street Glide will probably protect less well and the saddlebags are smaller but, again, we are not on a big touring. Never forget this: it is almost impossible to have two real motorcycles in one while keeping an easy transformation. On the other hand, we can take two models and try to keep the maximum of the qualities of each. A difficult bet to win but who knows ?
