Why Limited? On the contrary, it would seem that the lust of the big Harley tourers is limitless! The Road Glide did not want to leave this requirement to the Ultra. Each has its own facies for sharing the territory, the same desire to travel through countries in a plethora of equipment and opulence.
Replacing the Road Glide Ultra, the 114 Road Glide Limited sets itself apart with a few additional supplies, state-of-the-art electronics and a replacement of the 17 and 16-inch rims with an 18-inch ‘Slicer II’ duo. The new tank retains the same 22.7-liter capacity while taking care to let the gaze slide to the shiny ‘Pin Striping’ coating on the inside of the fairing. Heated grips are standard, a little touch of foil is given space on the mudguards by the addition of ‘Limited’ badges, and driving is now done on a double orchestrated rhythm. The enormous twin beats the measure, the force and the road; RDRS orchestrates the resulting dynamic.
RDRS? What is that ? The abbreviation for Reflex Defensive Rider Systems. Harley has shifted through overdrive to bring its Tourings into line with active driving technologies. With disconnectable two-level traction control (Standard or Rain), active cornering ABS, angle-sensitive coupled braking, anti-skid control by engine torque management, tire pressure monitoring and an assistant when starting on a hill, this ultimate Road Glide takes on assistance similar to that of a BMW or a KTM. Electronics can be found in both dynamics and entertainment. Recently, the Boom Box had evolved into a GTS version, faster, more resistant and with better contrast. The 6.5-inch color TFT screen always allows navigation between the radio, music playback on SD card or USB port, iPod and iPhone compatibility, voice recognition for phone functions, GPS and a host of information on the health of the motorcycle. The interface is controlled by touch or dedicated buttons on a comodo. In 2020, the MoCo will add app surveillance on smartphones. With HD Connect, the owner of a Limited can be informed remotely if someone is shaking or taking their motorcycle, how much fuel is left in the tank, range, mileage, battery charge, updates for on-board electronics, etc. Two constraints concerning this virtual guard: 1 / There must be a network; 2 / You have to pay a subscription, around 14 euros / month – but it’s free first year when you buy the bike.
Apps, screens, sensors, wires, 300-page user manuals … All this to distract us from the essential. Namely the deep passion that the ‘SharkNose’ to cut the kilometers, its lighting ‘Daymaker’ to disembowel at night, its pace to subdue the other GTs. On the Road Glide, the bow is imposing and the seats wide. We land on the back of this machine weighing more than 400 kilos, we wake up the M8 of 1868 cm3, we let it heat its metal, its oil, its liquid in the path of the hoses and radiators, then we ask for reason or emotion its thick torque peaking at 16.7 mkg. A Honda Goldwing Tour or a BMW Grand America will give you more, at 4,500 or 5,000 rpm; while the Harley will disgorge them to you at 3000 rpm. It shakes less at idle than the Twin Cam and the ones before, but it still sounds American-style decanter when you turn the handle. Once you have started cruising, you activate the cruise control, you talk to the passenger by intercom, you think about everything you have put in the 132 liters of capacity on board (the two suitcases + the Tour Pak), and we have already forgotten the heavy check left at the concession. In the end, the Road Glide may only be limited on one point: its lust for endless roads..
