The CBR set off to assault performance in an exceptional burst of enthusiasm. After years of following the competition, here it is giving itself the means to inflict a correction on the hypersports scene. It becomes even more striking in its SP edition, equipped with Ohlins and Brembo.
Efficiency to the end of the rims, whatever the price. Although it flaunts it loud and clear in its HRC colourway on the standard version, the SP does not speak louder about its demands. We would have appreciated a specific decoration, more violent looks, a more spicy character to mark the difference. But no, the two versions merge in a perfect mimicry. Only the golden legs announce a dose of additional pleasure and rigor.
The quality of Swedish suspensions is well established. Up front, the 43mm NPX inverted fork has been lengthened from the previous SP. This gives him more freedom in the geometry settings. Its pressurized cartridges limit cavitation, smooth control, better absorb shocks at high speeds and improve tire feel.
The rear shock is a TTX36, adjustable in preload, compression and rebound – just like the fork.
This second generation of semi-active suspensions is managed by the OBTi interface, recalibrated for more precise adjustments. The pilot can modify each setting from those set up in the base of each configuration. Three Modes are there to respond to terrain or mood profiles, with the ability to memorize changes.
Once released the 217 horses, this hypersport will return like a fury in the smallest curves. To calm that down, the SP falls in love with Brembo Stylema brake calipers. Big top, where each of the 4 pistons feast on gniaker the 330 mm discs. The front and rear master cylinders are also signed Brembo.
Just like the RR-R, the CBR 1000 SP has seriously increased in price. It must also be said that it is aimed at a more informed, more demanding public, able to use all its weapons. The CBR also reworked its frame and swingarm, installed winglets in the aerodynamic hybridization of the fairing, and pushed its electronic arsenal a little further. There are in the bowels of the CBR 1000 RR-R SP three Riding Modes, 5-level power adjustment, 3-stage engine brake, also 3-stage anti-wheelie, 9-stage torque control intervention possibilities (now intervening on the drift rate), a stopped start assistant, an active cornering ABS with 2 modes, a 5-inch TFT screen, a Smart Key keyless start system, a double shifter sense, full LED lighting and a steering damper managed by the IMU inertial unit.
Honda had fun with this CBR 1000 RR-R SP? No, Honda has translated their rage into a fighting machine. Between it and the Panigale V4R, the race for power is relaunched in the category. The CBR enters the new decade with much more speed.
